West Deptford Breaks the Woodbury Jinx

Saturday, September 23, 2000

By Ed Benkin
SJSports Staff Writer

It had been five years since West Deptford beat Woodbury on the football field. While the Eagles were awarded a forfeit victory off the field over the Thundering Herd last fall, West Deptford approached Saturday's contest with the memory of a 14-8 loss on the field. Only the accidental use of an ineligible player by Woodbury gave the Eagles the win in the record books. But when the two teams took the field on a rainy Saturday morning in Woodbury, the Eagles washed away five years of frustration with an impressive 20-0 victory. West Deptford not only raised their record to 2-0, they also enjoyed one of the most satisfying victories in school history.

Pennsauken Holds off Highland's Charge

Saturday, September 23, 2000

By Art Redd

Knowing that you can count on someone being there for you has its advantages. On the football field a quarterback's best friend is not only having the offensive line protecting you, but also having a receiver who runs that passing route to free himself for a first down. Pennsauken's tandem of quarterback Andrew Virnelli and wide out Tawan McNair were showing how well they counted on each other during their game on the road at Highland High School. The junior wide receiver McNair had 96-yards receiving in the first half as Virnelli lead Pennsauken over the Tartans in a close game, 21-19. Highland had a chance to tie the game but failed to convert on their two-point conversion attempt.

The Lenape Indians and Washington Township Minutemen waged a classic battle that will go down as one of the highlights, if not "the" highlight, of the 2000 football season. The fourth ranked Indians showed more resolve than our boys from Omaha Beach and gutted out an impressive victory over the number one ranked Washington Township by a 26-25 score.

Cherry Hill East Defeats Triton in Freshmen Football

Friday, September 22, 2000

By Bob Wankel
SJSports Special Correspondent

The Triton Freshmen football team looked to bounce back this week after an embarrassing 34-13 loss in their opener. The Cherry Hill East team also went down hard in their first game. This gave both teams a reasonable shot at victory, as there was no clear favorite. Heading into the game the Triton coaches asked for more intensity from the players and that is what they received. Well, at least in the first half.
