Next Stop, The Finals For A Young Star

On a day that saw heat that would make a camel beg for water, Brianna Brown of Pennsauken, played with all the coolness of a polar bear. Competing in The Art McAlway Memorial Tournament at Mill Creek Park in Willingboro NJ, Miss Brown traded ground strokes and games with Miss Karrissa Bendijo of Atlantic City NJ. The match saw the two athletes start out a little slow, both athletes waiting for the other to make the mistake. Brianna's steady forehand, that has been know to make others wilt under the heat, helped her win the first set 6-3.

On what was a great day for baseball the Camden Riversharks hosted the 1st Annual "Riversharks Kid's Club Baseball Clinic and Picnic". It was well attended by parents and kids alike, and by the looks of things it was hard to tell who was having the better time. Riversharks players and front office staff, as well as coaches and players from local high schools joined together to show the members of the Kid's Club valuable skills that will help them succeed at the game of baseball.

Mellgren Scores Twice As Breakers Down Charge, 2-1

(VILLANOVA, Pa., July 19, 2001) - Dagny Mellgren scored a pair of second-half goals to lead the Boston Breakers to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Charge tonight at Villanova Stadium. The Charge (6-6-3, 21 points) maintained fourth place in the WUSA despite the loss, but saw Boston (5-7-3, 18 points) hop into sixth with six games remaining for each team. The Breakers avenged a 3-2 setback in the first meeting on May 27 in Boston and will host the series and season finale on Sunday, August 12th.

The Charge and Breakers meet for the second time this Thursday at 7:05 p.m. In the first meeting on May 27 in Boston, Liu Ailing scored twice for Philadelphia, but it was Laurie Schwoy's header from Michelle Demko in the 83rd minute that was the difference in a 3-2 Charge victory. The Charge and Breakers also conclude the regular season against each other on Sunday, Aug. 12 at 3:05 p.m. in Boston. The Breakers' roster features U.S. National Team members Kristine Lilly and Kate Sobrero, as well as German stars Bettina Wiegmann and Maren Meinert.
