High School Basketball:
One Half Doesn't Make a Whole

Saturday, January 5, 2002

By Anton Figg
SJSports Special Correspondent

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Gateway came out of the starting block real strong in their basketball game with Sterling and for one half didn't look like a team that hadn't won a game this season. Sterling, which hasn't lost a game, looked like a team that was ready to suffer it's first defeat of the season, worked to keep Gateway in the game and to give their fans hope of a big upset. The game flowed for both teams and you could tell that everyone involved was prepared. The first half ended with Sterling holding a slim 34-28 lead.

By Art Redd

There was yet another challenge standing in front of the Lady Tartans Saturday afternoon at Highland High School. Washington Township entered the building in search of giving their opponent their first loss of the season. The Minutemaids' patient style of basketball seemed to be the way to slow down Highland's offense, but it was only a matter of time before Highland found a way to capture the 50-24 win at home. The second half of this game proved to be the turning point.

Collingswood only dressed six skaters, not counting their goalie and all played their hearts out until the final whistle. Almost the entire first period was played in the Collingswood zone with goalie Sean Wydrzynski facing numerous shots from close range. Despite allowing six goals in the period, Sean made several strong saves as his team was out shot 20-1.

No Clear Cut Favorite for Hockey Crown

Tuesday, January 1, 2002

By Mike Costantino

As the SJHSIHL enjoys its holiday break and teams prepare for the stretch run to battle for positioning, for the first time in a couple of years there is no clear cut dominant team that you can say should win it all. Bunched at the top of the division are Cherokee, Clearview and Washington Township with usually no more than two points separating these teams. Township, last years champ, lost some key players and leaders and hasn't established a number one goalie. Clearview, won the title two years ago and could be the slight favorite if they play disciplined hockey and avoid the retaliatory penalties.
