High School Football: Friday, October 1, 2004 By Jason Brown You can always tell that its football season by the leaves on the trees changing colors and the cooler temperatures bringing out the extra layer of clothing. This was the first day of October representing a full month of the fall season. It was another first for Winslow Township as they were the visiting team for the second week in a row looking for that elusive win. It wasn't going to be easy against a rejuvenated Mustangs team from Triton looking for their second win of the season. The Eagles would come through big on defense stopping Triton when it counted to pick up the 28-16 decision and their first victory of the season. |
High School Soccer: Friday, October 1, 2004 By Jerome Michaels Highland has gotten off to a quick start this season posting a very respectable 5-1-1 record in the Tri-County Conference Royal Division. With the Salem Rams boy's soccer team into town, the Tartans knew if they played well early, they could dominated the struggling Rams and not give them any momentum to build on. Using their speed and determination, the Tartans kept the pressure on the defenders looking for that momentum. Sean Mergenthal took care of that early in the game when his goal quickly put Highland ahead and eventually on their way to a 5-1 victory. |
High School Field Hockey: Friday, October 1, 2004 By Susan Hall It's still somewhat early in the season, but never too early to take about making the playoffs. With about three weeks remaining before the cutoff for the playoffs, teams are positioning themselves to qualify for the post season and divisional title. Both Collingswood and Audubon are amongst the leaders in their division and both were looking to pick up an important win in their Colonial Conference. With the game tied in the second half, the Lady Panthers from Collingswood scored twice to pull away from Audubon by a 4-2 margin. |
Volleyball Spotlight: Friday, October 1, 2004 By Bob Heller The USP women's volleyball team remained perfect in conference play at home with a 3-1 win tonight over visiting Georgian Court College. The Devils took the first two games, 30-23 and 30-26 before dropping game three 30-26. USP rebounded to take game four 30-24 to win the match, despite having a season low attack percentage of 12%. Roth had three of the Devils seven kills in game one. USP trailed 15-14 before a side out tied the game at 15-15. With Wenderoth serving, the Devils then scored four straight points to take a 19-15 lead and later expanded their lead to eight points 27-19 en route to the 30-23 win. |
High School Soccer: Thursday, September 30, 2004 By Stephanie Wright The girl's soccer team from Our Lady of Mercy Academy has gotten off to a good start winning five of their first six games. So far this season, the team has been successful in taking advantage of their opportunities. Those scoring chances have turned into goals and then into victories. In today's game against the Lady Panthers from Middle Township, OLMA completely out shot the Panthers by a 28-7 margin but were trailing by two goals heading into the second half. Two goals in the second have allowed OLMA to extend this Cape-Atlantic Conference game to one more deciding period. Maria Grady would score her 11th goal of the season in overtime to give OLMA the 3-2 come from behind victory. |

High School Soccer: Wednesday, September 29, 2004 By Susan Hall West Deptford took full advantage of their field position throughout this game. The Lady Eagles girl's soccer team kept Gateway's keeper Raschel Clark busy in the net. But with all of those scoring opportunities, the ball was bound to find the back of the net. By the end of this Colonial Conference game, seven goals were scored by West Deptford. Ashley Antczak and Stephanie Hitchner scored twice in this game to lead the Eagles' shutout triumph over the Gators. |

High School Soccer: Tuesday, September 28, 2004 By Stephanie Wright It's never easy starting out a season when most only give you a small chance of coming out on top of your division at the season's end. The Wildcats from St. Joseph have been selected as one of those talented teams that have a real good chance of winning the conference title. So when Our Lady of Mercy Academy was hosting the Wildcats, they knew they had to play above average especially with Tara Davies on the other team. Two players of their own have been scoring goals for Our Lady. Maria Grady and Jen Woldon both scored in this game while Meghan Zapeic earned her fourth shutout of the season. Our Lady went on the defeat St. Joseph 3-0. |

High School Field Hockey: Monday, September 27, 2004 By Susan Hall Every team has leaders that other players look to when the time comes for that big score is needed to pull out the win against their opponent. On the Lady Eagles field hockey team from West Deptford, Brittany Gibbs, Courtney Stetson and Katie Cipriani have been those players able to find the cage for their team. During their Colonial Conference Liberty Division match-up against Haddonfield, it was bound to be a very close game between two successful programs. With the game tied at one, Gibbs came up big for West Deptford when her shot enter the cage. The Eagles would hold onto to that one goal advantage to pick up the win. |
High School Soccer: Monday, September 27, 2004 By Susan Hall Every win counts but every lose has to sting a bit when your team is expected to come out on top of your division. For the Lady Indians from Lenape High School, the expectations are high and so far they haven't disappointed anyone yet. With a scoreless first half, it would come down to the team that could demonstrate the ability to come up with the big plays. Both teams would do so as this Olympic Conference girl's soccer game had to be decided in the overtime period. Lenape's Jamie Kunkel long distance shot found its way into the net giving the Indians the 2-1 victory. |
