High School Baseball: Saturday, April 23, 2005 By Jason Brown This year was another chance for Overbrook to repeat as champions of the Hammonton Baseball Tournament. It would be a good start as they took on the host Blue Devils in the preliminary round. The Rams’ players were successful finding open spaces as the team finished the game with sixteen hits. Rams starting pitcher Jim Birmingham watched his team score five runs in the first two innings and that was more than enough to advance to the final round with their 13-1 victory. But the championship game against Ewing was a different story as the defense was victimized by six errors in a 10-7 loss. |

High School Baseball: Thursday, April 21, 2005 By Jason Brown The Golden Eagles from Seneca have so far demonstrated what it takes to win games. Good defense, solid pitching and key hitting are three of many aspects of the game that will reward the coaching staff with a team victory. On this day, the Chiefs from Cherokee were the visiting team looking to end Seneca’s ten game winning streak in an Olympic Conference match-up. Starting pitcher Ryan Brecko would pitch a complete game for the Golden Eagles giving up just two run and striking out eight batters. A three run sixth inning finally decided this close game for Seneca as they extended their winning streak with a 6-2 decision. |
High School Baseball: Wednesday, April 20, 2005 By Jerome Michaels This game was a preview of what could happen again in the playoffs. Pennsville and Gloucester met during last year’s group championship game with the Eagles winning by four runs over top seeded Gloucester. Both teams are expected to return to the final game, but there was a regular season standing in their way. Proving that they are better than the team that captured the Tri-County Conference Classic Division title, Pennsville expanded a three run advantage by scoring ten runs in the sixth to pick up the 18-6 victory at Gloucester. |
High School Softball: Wednesday, April 20, 2005 By Susan Hall It's not uncommon to see a starting pitcher complete one game and then find that same pitcher staying on the mound to pitch yet another game on the same day. This past weekend in the Overbrook tournament, Nicole Ayres pitched twice and picked up two completed game wins for the Lady Spartans from Deptford against Pennsville and Eastern and she was not done. Starting in a Tri-County Conference Royal Division match-up against Cumberland, Ayres pitched recorded twelve strikeouts and Jackie Brown collected four hits helping the Spartans to a 17-0 win over the Colts. |
South Jersey Football: Wednesday, April 20, 2005 By Marty Cross The 2005 Camden Lynx are preparing for their upcoming season with intensity. With a considerable amount of players to choose from, the Lynx feel positive how much the team can improve. That's a huge statement since the Lynx have compiled a 20 - 3 record since being established in 2003 under Head Coach Lester Cream Jr. Two of the three loses are in post-season play (1 - 2) including last years 1st round exit to the Philadelphia Scorpions 35 - 17. The Lynx beat the Scorpions in a mid season contest 8 - 6 but played a much more focused team in the playoffs. |

High School Lacrosse: Monday, April 18, 2005 By Joyce Sagerty Talking about know your opponent, the two Cherry Hill high school girl’s lacrosse team took the field in a very competitive Olympic Conference matchup. Cherry Hill East was representing the American Division well by holding down the top position while Cherry Hill West was right in the middle of the pack of the Patriot Division. Even though these cross city rivals represent two different divisions, there were very familiar and formable opponents. The two teams were tied at halftime and this game would be decided during the second half when the Lions took their first lead of the game. East would stay close, but West would prevail by a 9-6 score. |
