Sunday, November 6, 2005

By Brian Smith
Philadelphia Phantoms Correspondent

The Philadelphia Phantoms have seemingly tried everything to get out of their six game funk. Sixty-five minutes of hockey and nine rounds of a shootout with the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins couldn't even turn the tide, as the Pens snuck out of the Wachovia Spectrum with a 5-4 shootout win on Sunday night. Pat Kavanagh collected the first goal of the game and the only one in the first period, as the Phantoms subdued power play came to life. Rookie Alexandre Picard slid the puck through the Penguins crease. Kavanagh and Brent Kelly banged away, with Kavanagh scoring his second of the season.

Saturday, November 5, 2005

By Jerome Michaels
SJSports Special Correspondent

The Braves from Williamstown has proven game after game that they could run the ball against any defense. They have been successful all season long with that philosophy as their undefeated record is proof of their success. Traveling to Deptford participating in a Tri-County Conference Royal Division game, Williamstown were unsuccessful scoring a rushing touchdown against the Spartans but would go to the passing game and surprise their opponent twice with touchdowns. The Braves defense would prevent Deptford from tying this game with time expiring and preserve their undefeated record by defeating the Spartans 14-7.

Seneca Powers Past Lenape When It Counts

Friday, November 4, 2005

By Vincent Lewis
SJSports Staff Writer

There’s so much at stake no matter who your opponent is when the regular season schedule plays out its final games. No opponent should be taken lightly especially when a division title is on the line. Today’s game against the Lenape Indians was a game Seneca needed to win, not just for the standings but for a chance to host a first round playoff game. The Golden Eagles were in a tie with Triton in the Burlington/Olympic League Liberty Division but also trailed Triton by just two points in the power points standings. So the Eagles game against the Indians did start they way they wanted, but did finish in a way they needed. After trailing early in the first quarter, Seneca would score the next twenty-three points to defeat Lenape by a 30-13 margin. Tim Meise finished the game with 118 yards on 21 carries for the Golden Eagles.

Friday, November 4, 2005

By Jerome Michaels
SJSports Special Correspondent

It was very impressive the way this game started out. The fifth seeded Falcons from Oakcrest were a team not to take lightly as they have demonstrated on several occasions during the regular season that they could score goals. Highland took that knowledge seriously and began to apply pressure on the defense and were quickly rewarded. Joe Cullen was unstoppable for Highland scoring four goals in this quarterfinal South Jersey Group III boy’s soccer game. The Tartans would defeat Oakcrest 6-1 and advance to the next round against the top seeded Red Raiders from Ocean City.

Drew Williams had two goals and an assist and Sean Swisher added three assists as Cherokee II skated by Paul VI 5-1 at Hollydell on Friday night. The night almost didn’t start out as well for Cherokee II as goalie Stephen Broadt was late arriving to the game and skated on the ice just as the officials had informed his team to skate with six guys. Mike Slusarz gave Cherokee II a 1-0 lead scoring right off the face-off five minutes into the game. Williams scored his first goal moments later on the power play on a feed from Swisher. Those two hooked up again late in the period on a 2-on-1 as Swisher drew the defenseman over and slid the puck to Williams and his shot found the net for a 3-0 lead.

Collingswood Advances in Shootout

Thursday, November 3, 2005

By Joyce Sagerty
SJSports Special Coorespondent

When you take a look back on the entire first round results of the South Jersey Group II bracket of the field hockey competition, the four games finished in a tightly played match indicating it would not be an easy trip to the finals. All of the top four teams were waiting for the results of those games leaving third seeded Collingswood hosting Haddonfield who defeated their opponent by a single goal. In these games, a single goal could mean a lot as not too many goals are needed to win with the defenses dominating the play. These two teams just could not decide a winner after regulation and two overtime periods. Collingswood would win the shootout by a 3-1 margin advancing the Panthers to the next round against second seeded West Deptford.

Bishop Eustace Stuns Camden Catholic

Thursday, November 3, 2005

By Crystal Parker

Coming into this game, both of these teams knew it wasn’t going to be easy to defeat their neighboring opponent. Experience has told them over and over again to limit giving up the corners and try not to leave any player alone in the box. Bishop Eustace traveling to Camden Catholic in first round action of the South Jersey Group II field hockey tournament were not successful at that task late in the second half. But what the Lady Crusaders were good at was scoring the only goal of this game and holding on to it. Hannah Rodgers’ goal just 48 seconds into the second half proved to be the game winner.
