East Patiently Escapes Away From Winslow

Saturday, February 4, 2006

By Anthony Phillips
SJSports Special Correspondent

For the majority of this wrestling match held at Cherry Hill East, the Cougars would look up at the scoreboard only to find themselves trailing the Eagles from Winslow Township. This Olympic Conference match was the first of two matches these teams would be competing in on the day. Neither the coaching staff nor the wrestlers from East appeared too worried about the score as they would trail by two points with two bouts to go. Jesse Cohen would put East ahead with a pin and Noah Bellar would avoid being pinned to secure the win. The Cougars would defeat Winslow Township by a 32-31 margin.

When these two teams met at Rancocas Valley participating in the Jeff Coney Memorial Tournament, it was a chance to see two girl's basketball programs from different conferences compete in a non-league game. Tiffany Crews would lead Willingboro this season in scoring average, but this day belonged to Woodrow Wilson's De'ree Fooks and Ashley Baker. Fooks needed six points to record her 1000th point and she would do that and then some. Friday, February 3, 2006

By Vincent Lewis
SJSports Staff Writer

It would be two teams from Tier II that started off the playoffs for the SJHSIHL Friday night at the Hollydell Ice Arena. Both Highland and Cinnaminson were playing for the rights to advance to the next round during this single elimination game. It was quite noticeably that Frank Vannoni for Highland and Andy Poskus for Cinnaminson didn't want their team's season to end. With the game tied and less than a minute and a half remaining in regulation, Matthew Grennon's goal not only avoided overtime but also extended Cinnaminson's season. With their 5-4 victory, Cinnaminson will now face the number one seed Timber Creek.

Hood Stands Strong, But Williamstown Finds a Way

Friday, February 3, 2006

By Vincent Lewis
SJSports Staff Writer

There has to be a lot said about a team that has not won a single game during the regular season and has loss their starting goalie. So when the Braves from Williamstown took the ice against Lenape in a Tier I first round playoff game, on paper it appeared that this game would be an easy win for Williamstown. And it would start out that way when twenty seconds into the game, Thomas Ruiz's difficult angle goal from behind the net gave Williamstown the lead. Another goal during the second period pushed that lead even further. During this entire game, the Braves attempted shot after shot after shot that John Hood put himself in front of. But the two goals that got pass were more than enough for Williamstown to advance to the next round.

It was a tale of two halves for the division leading Blue Devils from Burlington City. In a Burlington County League Patriot Division basketball game against Cinnaminson, it had appeared as if the Pirates were ready to do all they could to upset the leaders of their division. Knowing the cutoff date to qualify for the upcoming state tournament was less that a week away, Cinnaminson aggressive defense kept them right in this game up until halftime. But Burlington City pulled themselves together behind the success of Mike Morris and took over the second half. The Blue Devils remained undefeated in their division with their 58-45 victory over the Pirates.
