St. Joseph Gets Cape Atlantic League another Win

David Catalana, executive director of the Shoot Down Cancer Foundation Inc., has been a very busy person putting together another high school basketball tournament. For the past five years, The Olympic-Cape Challenge has given basketball fans in South Jersey one of the most action packed weekends of high-school basketball of the year. With twenty-eight of the best teams from the two best basketball conferences in South Jersey set to do battle at Timber Creek High School for fourteen great match-ups. With the first two games played resulted in the Cape-Atlantic Conference winning the first game and then the Olympic Conference the next, St. Joseph and Cherry Hill East took center stage. The Wildcats would stay one step ahead of Cherry Hill East and come away with the 58-50 victory. Norm White led St. Joseph's in scoring with 23 points.

Camden Catholic Turns Back Ocean City

It takes the game of basketball to bring out the awareness that help is needed financially for the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia fight against childhood cancers. There was plenty of basketball being played at the Cape-Atlantic Challenge held at Timber Creek to help the "Shoot Down Cancer Foundation, Inc." This year's event featured some very intriguing games including match-ups between several top 20 teams. So when the Red Raiders from Ocean City competed against Camden Catholic, it was an opportunity to attend a high school basketball game for a good cause. A slow start by Ocean City proved to be the difference in their 50-41 defeat to Camden Catholic.

Cherokee Give Olympic Conference Their Third Win

The Chiefs from Cherokee and Middle Township had the opportunity to watch all of or some of the first four games scheduled before them during the day at the Cape-Atlantic Challenge boy's basketball tournament. Hammonton defeated Triton to start the day off and then Pennsauken, St. Joseph and Camden Catholic were the winners of their games. With the Cape Atlantic Conference and Olympic Conference both even at two games apiece, Cherokee would give their conference another win as they defeated the Panthers from Middle Township by a 52-39 margin.

Paul VI Upsets Atlantic City in Overtime

With the threat of a major snow storm on its way, the Paul VI and Atlantic City game would be the last game played in the Cape-Atlantic Challenge on this day. Inside the gymnasium at Timber Creek, this game provided enough entertainment that allowed most to forget about the inclement weather for the moment that was on its way. This tournament has allowed two teams from two conferences to match their talent against one another. The Vikings from Atlantic City have been labeled as one of the top ten teams in South Jersey. Paul VI would watch the Vikings lead at the break only to rally in the second half to send this game into overtime. The Eagles dominated the extra session and posted a 75-66 win over Atlantic City.

Devils Survive to Win and Reach .500 Mark

The Lightning struck- but it was just a glancing blow as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's basketball team withstood a 73% shooting effort from Goldey Beacom College in the second half to defeat the Lightning, 66-62 this afternoon in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. With the win, the Devils reach the .500 mark for the first time this season with an 11-11 overall record. USP also improves to 9-8 in CACC games and take over sole possession of sixth place in the league standings, just one game out of second place with five conference games remaining. The Devils have now won 11 of their last 15 games. Goldey Beacom falls to 15-8 overall and 10-8 in league play.

Shumoski, Rance Lead Devils to Sixth Straight Win

Leah Shumoski scored 20 points and recorded her 11th double-double of the season while teammate Shelby Rance had 18 points as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia cruised to their sixth straight win, 85-68 over Goldey Beacom College in a women's basketball game in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. With the win, the Devils improve to 16-6 overall and 15-4 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) games. Goldey Beacom drops to 5-17 overall and 5-14 in league play.

High School Ice Hockey:
Clearview Ends Rancocas Valley's Season

Seven penalties, seven goals and eight assists all during the third period alone highlighted the ice hockey game played at Hollydell Ice Arena Friday night. Six of those goals that were scored during that period were short handed according to the scorer's sheet. Both Rancocas Valley and Clearview were trying to extend their season as they participated in this single elimination game. These two teams were bounced out of the winner's bracket with a loss and had to battle it out on the ice looking to advance their way toward the finals. A five goal explosion by Clearview would be the difference in this game. Goalie Chuck Storms would save 26 of 29 shot attempts helping Clearview to their 7-3 victory.

Hot Second Half Powers Devils to Third Straight Win

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia shot a blistering 68.4% in the second half of their men's basketball game against Nyack College tonight to earn their third straight win, 75-69 and even their conference record at 8-8. The Devils are now 10-11 overall and 8-8 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) games. Nyack falls to 10-12 overall and 9-8 in CACC games.

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia used a 53-point outburst in the first half as they cruised to a 74-54 win over Nyack College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball game tonight at the Bowman Center in Nyack, NY. The Devils improve to 15-6 overall and 14-4 in league play. Nyack falls to 3-18 overall, 2-16 in league play.

Cherokee Hold Off Their Division Leaders

It was a playoff game atmosphere before the upcoming state basketball tournament even began. Lenape, already with the Olympic Conference American Division title in hand, traveled to Cherokee in a battle between the two teams leading their division. Both of these teams have secured a position in the state tournament, but this game was about bragging rights. With a pack gymnasium and the Chiefs leading by double digits, the Lenape fans would watch the Indians pull with a point late in the quarter. Cherokee would then end their scoring drought and hold off Lenape and post a 52-49 win.

Phantoms Top Wilkes-Barre/Scranton

Tony Voce and Marc Cavosie each registered a goal and an assist to lead the Philadelphia Phantoms to a 3-2 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at the Wachovia Spectrum on Wednesday night. After a scoreless first period, Tony Voce started things off with a power play goal just 1:01 into the second. Captain John Slaney orchestrated the play with a nifty pass to Cavosie down the right wing boards. Cavosie then dished the puck to Voce in the low slot, and the Philly native backhanded home his ninth of the season.

KiXX Fall to Baltimore, 8-4, in 11th Annual School Day Game

The Philadelphia KiXX (4-11) dropped their franchise worst sixth straight contest, 8-4, to the Baltimore Blast in front of a season-high 9,356 fans at the Wachovia Spectrum. The contest marked the club's 11th Annual School Day Game, which is designed as educational field trip to all the area schools. Blast forward Giuliano Celenza registered the game winner on a pass from P.J. Wakefield at 2:39 of the third quarter. Peter Pappas (4-10) suffered the loss for Philadelphia with nine saves on 17 chances, while Sagu (10-3) earned the victory with the Cougars, turning away 12 of the 15 shots he faced.

Glassboro's Second Half Enough to Defeat Gloucester

This game was about two teams heading in two different directions. The Bulldogs from Glassboro has been successful at winning those important games from their division while the Lions from Gloucester have been looking for ways to come away with a win. The way the first half of this Tri-County Conference Classic Division game ended, neither team held an advantage. It wouldn't be until midway through the third quarter that the Bulldogs would begin to slowly pull away. Glassboro would finish off Gloucester by posting a 68-45 victory.

LEAP Academy Sets Back Woodrow Wilson

Fresh off of their victory against Camden, Woodrow Wilson would compete against another neighboring team in LEAP Academy. The Lancers were looking to get back to the winning side of a game after being defeated by St. Benedicts this past weekend. The two teams were competing in a non-league that started off with LEAP Academy holding onto a four point lead. Woodrow Wilson would find themselves quickly trailing before the half when the Lancers erupted for twenty-seven second quarter points. That proved to be the difference in this game as LEAP Academy would pick up their fifteenth win of the season when they defeat the Tigers 78-69.

Weaver's Overtime Goal Advances Moorestown

The second round of the SJHSIHL began with Cherokee 2, fresh off of their victory against Paul VI, traveling to the Igloo to take on Moorestown. Enjoying their first round bye, the home team appeared to have the early momentum as they would take the early one goal lead. Cherokee 2 would respond by not only tying the game but also by taking a one goal lead heading into the third period. Colin Corley tied this game for Moorestown early in the third, but after that goal the two goalies, Stephen Broadt and Max Paluszynski, turned away every shot headed towards the net. It took an overtime period to decide this game and when Mike Weaver's second goal of the game crossed the goal line, Moorestown would begin to enjoy their 3-2 victory.

Raptor of the Week: Wayne Smalls

Freshman guard Wayne Smalls had another fine week for the Rutgers-Camden men's basketball team as he raised his scoring average from 18.0 to 18.7 points per game by scoring 50 points in a pair of New Jersey Athletic Conference contests. Smalls scored 20 points against The College of New Jersey Feb. 1, aided by 10-for-11 shooting from the foul line. He added a 30-point performance against Montclair State University Feb. 4, giving him four 30-point games in his first collegiate season. It's the third Raptor of the Week honor for Smalls this year. He also won the honor Jan. 9 and Jan. 23.
