Philadelphia Rebounds Against Rochester Wings Defeat Knighthawks, 16-12

The Wings made up for a disappointing loss in the first of the home-and-away series against first-place Rochester with a 16-12 win in game two Saturday at the Wachovia Center. Newly acquired Mike Regan made an impact in his first game with Philadelphia, scoring three goals and two assists. Rookie Sean Greenhalgh led the Wings' scoring with three goals and three assists. The Wings see their next game action in two weeks when they face the Western Division leading Arizona Sting on Saturday, March 25 at 1:30 p.m. at Wachovia Center.

Phantoms Ride Four Power Play Goals To 6-3 Win

The Philadelphia Phantoms turned in their best power play performance of the season Friday night, scoring four goals on seven opportunities while holding off the Toronto Marlies for a 6-3 victory at Ricoh Coliseum. The Phantoms took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission on a pair of power play tallies. Tony Voce struck first when he fired home a one-timer off a pass from Stephen Wood at the 6:09 mark. Then at 17:14, Stefan Ruzicka wrested a puck from the left point that buckled and knuckled its way past Jean-Sebastien Aubin.

Rochester Defeats Wings 17-8

An explosive Rochester Knighthawks offense led by Shawn Williams ten point performance (5G, 5A) defeated the Philadelphia Wings by a score of 17-8 at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, NY. The Wings (5-5) face the Knighthawks (7-3) again tomorrow at Wachovia Center at 8 p.m. "We really struggled offensively tonight and just looked sluggish overall," said Wings' General Manager and Head Coach Lindsay Sanderson. "We were hoping to take this game tonight to take the pressure off of tomorrow a bit. Tomorrow night's game is absolutely crucial for us."

Devils Blown Out by Southern Connecticut

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia saw their season come to an end this evening at the NCAA Northeast Regionals as the #1 seed Southern Connecticut State University Owls handed the devils their biggest loss of the year, a 76-43 blowout in New Haven Connecticut. USP, the CACC Tournament champions, close out the season with a 23-8 record. Southern Connecticut improves to 29-3 and will advance to the Northeast Region Semi-finals on Saturday.

LEAP Wins the Fast Pace Battle Against Bordentown

The coaches usually can tell at the start of a basketball season when the roster has been finalized on which players have made the team. Only in their second year in the league, LEAP Academy's coach Macro Marcos knew he had a very talented team that had a good chance of making it to the state finals. The Lancers will get their chance to prove their coach right as their 106-75 rout over Bordentown moved them into Group 1 state finals against Bloomfield Tech. Five players finished in double figures for the Lancers.

Five South Jersey Teams Selected for the Flyers Cup

With the annual Flyers Cup upon us, the SJHSIHL had five teams invited to play in this year's tournament. Along with league champion Washington Township, Cherokee, Shawnee, Williamstown and Moorestown all received invites. Cherokee received the highest seed of all the teams; they are seeded fourth and will play the winner of Bishop McDevitt vs. Freedom game, at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Wednesday March 15th. Moorestown will also play the same night at the Skate Zone against Perkiomen Valley.

Haddonfield Pulls It All Together Against Haddon Heights

It was a battle between two familiar opponents competing in the South Jersey Group 2 girls' basketball finals being held at Williamstown High School. The top ranked Lady Garnets from Haddon Heights were hosting the third seeded Bulldogs from Haddonfield and it would be another game to remember. These two teams from the Colonial Conference met twice during the regular season with both teams winning on their home court. This time at a neutral site, the Garnets halftime lead would be quickly erased during the third quarter and Haddonfield would control the game and the lead from that point on. The Lady Bulldogs would capture the Group 2 championship title with their 42-36 come from behind victory.

LEAP Academy Captures Its First Group Title

Even before the opening tip-off took place, this South Jersey Group I title game between the top seeded Lancers from LEAP Academy and the second seeded Blue Devils from Burlington City was a match-up and a test both teams were ready to take on. Burlington City features a guard oriented offense that anyone of them could take control of a game. The Lancers has the convenience of deep bench with players being inserted into the game without losing anything on the court. With the Lancers holding onto a one point lead heading into the final quarter, LEAP Academy would win the battle of the boards with their height and post a 90-83 victory and capture their first title in their brief school year's history.

Womens Premier Soccer League Coming to South Jersey

In May of 2006, Atlantic County will begin to play host to some of the nations best female soccer players. The AC Diablos soccer club was recently formed by a group of business men and soccer enthusiasts led by Matt Driver. He is a former USL franchise owner and a nationally respected professional soccer coach, more recently with the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer. The Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) is an independent league whose main focus is on the development of highly competitive women's soccer teams. Women's football ranking service places the WPSL as the second ranked women's league in the world and the number one women's league in the United States.

Rance named CACC Women's Basketball Player of the Week

University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's Basketball player Shelby Rance (Central Columbia High School/Bloomsburg, PA) was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending March 5, 2006. Rance, a 5'8" junior guard, scored 61 points in three games this week as the Devils swept through the CACC Women's Basketball Tournament to capture their second CACC Championship in three years and earning CACC Tournament Most Valuable Player Honors.

Atlantic City Defeats Lenape and Captures Back-to-Back Championships

It's not easy to win back to back titles and the Vikings from Atlantic City were looking to defeat the Lenape Indians for the South Jersey Group 4 championship. Both teams had worked their way through the bracket that included the Indians knocking off second seeded Shawnee to advance to the finals. The top seeded Vikings would start this game out running and they didn't stop until the final buzzer was sounded. The results for their efforts would be a 58-50 decision over Lenape allowing Atlantic City to repeat has champs.

Raptor of the Week: Matt Calloway

Senior first baseman Matt Calloway went 6-for-11 (.545) during the week to raise his early-season batting average to .500 (10-for-20) and extend his hitting streak to five games for the 3-2 Scarlet Raptor baseball team. Calloway leads the team in batting average, is second with seven runs and tied for second with five RBIs. His 10 hits give him 147 for his career, tying Tom Cusano (1991-94) for fourth place on the all-time list. Ahead of him is Jamie Schwantes (1994-97) in third place with 166. Brian Murphy (2001-04) holds the program record with 208. On March 1, Calloway hit the ninth sacrifice fly of his career, breaking a tie for the program record with Murphy.
