By Stu Franklin

So far this season, the high school baseball season has seen its share of upsets leaving those who follow the game wondering if every game will be a difficult one. The good teams will easily put a loss behind them and take the season one game at a time. Others may find it hard to shake off a disappointing loss. In a non-league game played at Cherry Hill West, the visiting Blue Devils from Burlington had a couple of one run games that didn't go their way and the other that did. With their 7-4 victory over the Lions, Cherry Hill West evened their record to three wins and three losses.

Camden Catholic Stretches Win Streak to Three

Thursday, April 13, 2006

By Jerome Michaels
SJSports Special Correspondent

It's very important, especially during the early part of the season, to pick up as many victories as a team can in order to keep up with the division leaders. A team will never know when and if a losing streak could happen, so winning those necessary games could cushion a fall if one does come around. In an Olympic Conference National Division baseball game played at Camden Catholic, the Fighting Irish would score early and often against the visiting Warriors from Camden County Vocational Tech. Starting pitcher Chris Dondarski would pick up the win on the mound for Camden Catholic. The Irish would defeat the Warriors by a 20-2 margin.

Just two days ago, St. Augustine Prep boys' lacrosse team celebrated picking up their first win of the season by defeating Winslow Township. That momentum would carry over against their game at West Deptford where the Hermits would hold a 2-1 lead at halftime against the undefeated Eagles. Austin Tracey and Max Voumard scored back to back goals before halftime for St. Augustine. But the second half would be a different out for West Deptford as they received three goals from Matt Nicolosi and three goals from Steve Helmuth and outscore their opponent 10-1. After starting the season with seven consecutive losses on the road, the Phillies Single-A affiliate Lakewood BlueClaws returned home to FirstEnergy Park to take on the Delmarva Shorebirds in their home opener. Despite an 0-7 record, the BlueClaws were playing competitive baseball, losing six of those seven games by one run. A very patriotic pre-game ceremony featured the R.O.T.C. Color Guard from Lakewood High School on the field and a playing of Toby Keith’s “American Soldier” complete with video on the giant screen and a fly over from McGuire Air Force Base. Fans then joined in the singing of both “The Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America.”

Shawnee's Defense Keys Win at Triton

Tuesday, April 11, 2006

By Susan Hall
SJSports Special Correspondent

When you think of the game of softball, most of the time the first thought that comes to mind is the pitcher and how much velocity the ball sails across the plate and into the catcher's glove. What is sometimes forgotten is that when the bat does come in contact with that pitch, the ball will be put in play and the defense must be ready at all times. Starting pitcher Allison Jordan for the Renegades from Shawnee would get plenty of support from the other nine players taking up positions on the field when they traveled to Triton in search of their second consecutive win. In a pitcher's duel, Shawnee would pick up the only run they needed in the first inning and held off Triton by a 3-0 margin in an Olympic Conference Patriot Division game.

Seneca's Hard Work Pays Off

Tuesday, April 11, 2006

By Vincent Lewis
SJSports Staff Writer

When you take a look at the statistics, the match up between the Golden Eagles from Seneca and the Lancers from Holy Cross, it appeared that this would be a competitive game. The team limiting their turnovers and executing well would pick up the well deserved win. When Mike Schiraldi scored the first goal of the game for Seneca, Holy Cross would respond with a goal scored by Joe Wagner. That's the way this Olympic Conference boys' lacrosse game went through four quarters. But on this day, the Golden Eagles' hard work especially during the second half allowed them to outscore the Lancers by three goals. Seneca's Kirk Kaiser would score three goals during that important second half and help the Golden Eagles pick up the 10-8 victory.

Baseball is just one of many indicators that warmer weather is on the way and everyone including the players can't help but to get excited about playing the game. In a Colonial Conference game against the Bulldogs from Haddonfield traveling to Collingswood, it would be a chance for these two teams to pick up an import conference win. Haddonfield would be that team convincingly enjoying their times at bat as they scored eight runs during the fifth and sixth inning and defeat the Panthers by an 11-0 margin.
