20th Century All-Star Teams: Riverside High School

Sunday, July 11, 1999

By Charlie Schick
South Jersey Baseball Historical Society

In our task to try to select the best Riverside High School baseball players and coach of the 20th century, we found our assignment to be no easy matter. A number of road blocks faced the selection of the Rams' elite team, as varied levels of competition and the aluminum bat introduction were just a few of the conditions that had to be weighed. These factors plus other intangibles made the comparison of player achievements over the years difficult at best.

On Monday June 7, 1999, the sport section of all the country's major newspapers headlined the end of Roger Clemens 20-game win streak. The big New York Yankee right-hander lost his streak when the New York Mets pounded him for 7 runs in just 2 2/3 innings, and went on to a 7 - 2 victory.

Winning Baseball's Triple Crown Is The Rarest Of Honors

Sunday, May 23, 1999

By Charlie Schick
South Jersey Baseball Historical Society

Over the years there have been hundreds of batting champions, as well as, home run and RBI kings that have been crowned throughout baseball history. But when it comes to accomplishing the Triple Crown (leading your respective league in batting average, home runs, and RBI's) that's another story. In fact, since the beginning of the 20th century, major league baseball has experienced a Triple Crown winner only 14 times. Even more limiting is the fact that only 12 major league players have ever claimed the award in that time period, since two Hall of Fame members Roger Hornsby, and Ted Williams have turned the rarest of baseball's offensive honors.twice.

Who is Charlie Schick?

Sunday, May 16, 1999

By Mike Costantino
SJSports Staff Writer

When my editor asked me if I would interview Charlie Schick, a baseball enthusiast who has lived and breathed South Jersey baseball for over thirty years, having never heard of Charlie Schick before I was not sure what to expect. What I found was a guy who not only can tell you that it was a South Jersey resident that scored the first run ever scored in the National League but also tell you who was the leading hitter on Shawnee's 1985 baseball team.

South Jersey Baseball History:
The Perfect Games

Sunday, May 9, 1999

By Charlie Schick
South Jersey Baseball Historical Society

Historically speaking, the most famous perfect game ever pitched in the Major Leagues has to be Don Larson's masterpiece during the World Series of 1956. Larson, New York Yankees lanky right-hander, hurled his gem on October 8th, and required only 97 pitches to shut down a hard-hitting Brooklyn Dodger squad. The Yankees won the game 2-0 and Larson went into the record books for throwing the first and only perfect game in World Series history.

The All-Time Sluggers

Sunday, May 2, 1999

By Charlie Schick
South Jersey Baseball Historical Society

There is no question that few individuals in any professional sport have ever had the impact on the game that Babe Ruth had on major league baseball. Without a doubt, the New York Yankees Ruth completely changed the game with his frequent and towering home runs during the 1920's. Needless to say, the fans of the game responded to his exciting new style of home run baseball, as attendance and national interest in the game skyrocketed.
