Cherokee Ends Successful Season Dramatically

Saturday, December 3, 2005

The way the Chiefs from Cherokee finished the regular season to qualify for the group tournament was a separate story in itself. After losing their first two games of the regular season, the Chiefs were faced with a must win situation each week they took the field. That sense of urgency but with a great deal of patience allowed Cherokee to compile a winning streak against some very good football programs. Absegami would be that final test that the Chiefs had to pass and it didn’t start the way they wanted. Trailing by 19 points, Cherokee managed a comeback that will be remember for a very long time that sent this game into overtime. A touchdown in overtime and a defensive stop of the Braves capped a very successful season for Cherokee as their 32-25 victory allowed the Chiefs to hold the South Jersey Group IV trophy high above their heads.

It was an opportunity for some of the graduating high school seniors to showcase their talents on the field for the last time as high school football players. Some will move onto a higher learning institution in hopes of extending their football talents at the college level, and some will fully concentrate on their education giving football a rest. For Woodbury's Marvin McKinnie who will be attending Mesabi Range Junior College, his performance alone provided excitement for all to enjoy with his dazzling display of now you see me, now you don't. This time at Eastern High School, the 14th Annual South Jersey Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame game saw team White defeat team Blue 42-12 in the Adam Taliaferro Foundation All-Star Football Classic played at Frank J. McAleer Stadium. McKinnie accepted the honor proudly when he was named the Most Valuable Player for team White.
