South Jersey Runner's Club:
Bill Kile's Memorial Run Recipients are the True Winners

Saturday, July 24, 2004

By Art Redd
SJSports Staff Writer

Eight years and counting! That was the theme to this year's Bill Kile's Memorial Run Saturday morning at Jack Curtis Stadium in Cooper River Park. Each year the ultimate goal is to raise money for the William H. Kile Jr. Humanitarian Scholarship Fund and each year the loyal runners show up to participate in either the One Mile Fun Run/Walk or the 4 Mile Run. Bill Kile III is always working hard before, during and after the race is completed greeting, organizing and helping the staff in providing all of the essentials needed in helping the runners in having a good run. In an impressive run, last year's winner Marc Cianfrani improved on his personal time and finished first in front of Daniel Deichert and Margarito Perez. Peggy Levin was the first women to cross the finish line.

When the subject of running a marathon comes up, the first thing that comes to some people's mind is why I would want to run a marathon. Sure there are good causes to participant in one, but the question of why still lingers in their mind. Plainly put, it's a sport and most athletes understand that a passion for a sport can be an athletic addition. Whether its basketball, soccer, football or running, a lifestyle change of making time to participate in your addition becomes a high priority. Running is no different as the personal challenge of finishing the race in first place or you're completing the course better than before is the highest goal. And yes let's not forget that any sport is a great form of exercise.

A great time recorded by Cianfrani in the male division was good enough to record the fourth fastest time in the history of this event. A time of 20:47 was better than his last year’s first place finish of 21:09. The course record is owned by Chuck Crabb who finished the four miles in 20:06 back in 1997. For the female division, Peggy Levin’s 25:14 course run was the third best overall. Erin Donohue run back in 2002 holds the course record with a time of 23:18. Last year’s winner Heather McGarvie finished in third place in the women’s division and also ran better than last year.

The winners truly in this event are the students who receive the scholarship to further their educations. This year’s recipient went to a single individual for the first time. Julian Johnson, who has plans of being a pediatrician, was the senior from Pennsauken High School awarded the fund with his overall GPA and involvement during his high school years. Titles of Student Government vice president as a senior and vice president of the African-American Culture Club as a sophomore and junior, Johnson will attend the Rutgers University in New Brunswick in the fall major in premed. The varsity baseball catcher for the Indians also was on the varsity basketball team as a freshman and a member of the indoor track team during his junior and senior years.
