High School Ice Hockey:
Township Wins JVB Division Championship

After a furious, physical but scoreless 1st period the Washington Township JVB Ice Hockey Club went on to defeat the Shawnee Renegades by a score of 4 to 1, capturing 1st place in the SJHSIHL JVB Division.

Township goals were scored by #65 Eric Marano at 10:28 of the 2nd period, assisted by #9 captain Scott Singer. #35 Mike Mazzuca scored Township's 2nd goal of the period with the assist coming again from #9 Scott Singer. During this fast paced penalty filled period 2 goals were disallowed due to a too many men on the ice delayed call and a questionable crease violation.

High School Wrestling:
Edgewood Splits Their Double Meet

Edgewood was involved in a double meet on Saturday with Overbrook and Bishop Eustace at Overbrook High School. The Eagles would have to concentrate on Bishop Eustace first. Edgewood would lose the first match of the day on a pin by Joe Delfino. But they would reverse things with pins in the 112 and 119 pounds matches by Jeff Mullen and Lee Minniti, respectively. The Eagles would use a total of five pins and go onto a 62-15 victory over Eustace.

Overbrook Pins Two Victories

When hosting a wrestling match at home, especially a double match, the home crowd would show up in anticipation of seeing their team performing well. Overbrook would compete against Camden and Edgewood High Schools and please their fans who witnessed a double victory. It would be Overbrook's Kevin McGowen and John Miller having pins against their opponents in both matches of the day.

Lady Red Devils Defeat Cherokee

Kecia Rosado had the hot hand against Cherokee and would not be denied her points. With the score tied at 26 at the break, the Lady Red Devils ran away in the second half to defeat Cherokee by 12. Rosado was able to take the ball up the court and into the lane with authority. Once in the lane, she could either put the shot up or dish it off to the opener player. Rancocas Valley out scored Cherokee 19 to 8 in the deciding third quarter. Both teams played evenly in the final quarter, but the Lady Chiefs could not make up the deficit.

Camden Catholic Holds Off Highland

Whenever two good teams get together to compete against each other, usually the parking lot is a sign that a good sporting event is about to happen. Let's take the wrestling match where Highland traveled to Camden Catholic. The parking lot was packed from front to back. And if you showed up late, you had to struggle to get a seat in the house. Everyone in attendance had to remember last year's match against these two teams. That's when Highland's long winning streak came to an end by the Irish. Camden Catholic continued their winning streak against Highland and held off 31-29.

Shawnee Wins On The Road

Shawnee's girls' basketball team defeated Highland in an Olympic Conference game. The Renegades went on a 10-0 run in the second quarter to pull away for good for a 44-31 win at Highland High School. The Lady Tartans would play Shawnee tough for 3 of the 4 quarters but could not overcome an 11-point deficit in the third quarter.

Eagles and Cougars Reach Exciting 7-7 Tie

If you're tired of the clutching and holding of the NHL, come out and watch end to end play, big hits, great saves, great plays, fast skating, and players who give it their all on every shift. It is the South Jersey High School Hockey League.

On Friday, January 30th the Cherry Hill East Cougars (SJHSIHL Tier I) and the Edgewood Eagles (SJHSIHL Tier II) faced off at Hollydell Ice Center in a very exciting game that left no one a loser. Some of the eager fans, like Mrs. Anita Bullock and Mr. Douglas Roemer, said the 7-7 tie was truly entertaining.
