Archbishop Ryan's Rawle and Cherry Hill East's Vurgassen had matching hat tricks but it was Archbishop Ryan's 5 unanswered goals in the second period that made the difference. Cherry Hill opened the scoring with 4:48 remaining in the first period Vurgassen from Gunther, but it wouldn't be until the third period that Cherry Hill would score again.

By Art Redd
SJSports Staff Writer

It's here! The start of the 1998 High School fall sports. That's when students are excited about returning to school after that long summer break. Well, some of the students are excited. For Highland and Deptford, the season was under way for their girl's soccer teams. This non-league game was an important one to coaches Jim Smith (Highland) and Michelle Tims (Deptford). Early season victories can go a long way during the year. Both teams would have to settle for a 1-1 overtime decision.

High School Football:
Delran's Trump & Marino Too Much for Blue Devils

Friday, September 11, 1998

By Forrest Robleto
SJSports Staff Writer

Delran out-passed, out-ran, out-kicked, and out-scored Burlington City Friday night on terrific performances by Ted Trump and Vince Marino. Trump, the nationally recognized baseball pitcher who made his first start as a quarterback, showed he could also pitch a football. He started a little slow, four of his incompletions were on his first four attempts. But once he found the mark he threw an awesome seven for eight including 40-yard plus passes to Marino and Manny Mahan. Overall he threw the ball for 146 yards and three touchdowns with seven completions in twelve attempts. The Bears would defeat Burlington City 41-6.

Tuesday, September 8, 1998

By Forrest Robleto

Despite several chances and two beautiful breakaways by Christy Madden, Cherry Hill East didn't get anything past Haddonfield's keeper Alexis George. She was all-state last year as a sophomore and celebrated her birthday on Monday. George stopped Madden twice in Haddonfield's 1-0 win over Cherry Hill East at Richterman Field. Haddonfield was just coming off a 5-0 win over Moorestown and Cherry Hill from a 2-1 win over West Deptford.

By Ron Wence
Edgewood Varsity Boys Coach

[The Edgewood Eagles] are looking for all-star years from Keith Swingle, Alec Walker, Mike Muckley, and Brandon Cohen. The team will be extremely fast up front. Walker should be able to control the midfield with plenty of support players around him. The defense is the question, can Muckley bring together the young group in the back?

By Tracy Williams and Megan Wolfrom

"We are the mighty cheerleaders and we're gonna rock this team to a victory!"

Cheerleading isn't just acting silly. Cheerleading is learning jumps, stunts, cheers and dances.

We should know, we spent this past summer at Shawnee cheerleading camp. During the week of July 13-17, Shawnee High School had a cheerleading camp. The camp was run by Shawnee's cheerleading coaches - Mrs. Horner (Football), Mrs. Smith (Basketball) and by a variety of Shawnee Varsity cheerleaders.

Cross Country Preview:
Westampton Tech

Tuesday, September 8, 1998

By Chuck Elkins
Westampton Tech Varsity Boys Coach

As the first year coach of this cross country team in our first year in the Burlington County League, I am faced with starting basically from scratch to build a new team.

We lost 3 top runners to graduation and another three to our Medford campus when their career major program moved.

In spite of this we are enthusiastic about our entrance to the league and the upcoming and future seasons. We are looking forward to recruiting a good bunch of freshmen and other returning students after school gets back in session.
