Storm defender Costea Decu recorded the game-winning goal at 5:56 of the third quarter. Stuart Dobson (2-1) took the loss for the KiXX with five saves on 12 chances, while Danny Waltman (4-1) earned the victory for Chicago, turning away 11 of the 15 shots he faced. |
Ice Hockey Spotlight: Sunday, November 14, 2004 By Al Cohen Ben Stafford scored 2:41 into overtime tonight to lift the Philadelphia Phantoms to their club-record 10th straight victory, a 3-2 decision over the Norfolk Admirals at the Wachovia Spectrum. Philadelphia controlled the puck during overtime, not allowing a shot on goal by Norfolk, and won the game during a lengthy possession in the Admirals end. Wade Skolney and Mark Murphy worked the puck to Stafford between the circles and the third-year center had time to collect himself and rip a shot over goaltender Craig Anderson's shoulder for his second of the year. |
High School Football: Saturday, November 13, 2004 By Jerome Michaels They say that having an offense that can scored touchdowns wins games, but the defense is what wins championships. During the first quarter of the South Jersey Group 3 first round football game at Pemberton, the Hornets took care of the offensive scoring part of attempting to win the game. And for three quarters, Pemberton’s defense prevented Delsea from putting any points on the scoreboard. Lester Goffney took control of the running duties scoring a touchdown for the Hornets and continued their winning ways with a 20-6 victory. Pemberton will now travel to Deptford to take on the Spartans. |
Ice Hockey Spotlight: Saturday, November 13, 2004 By Kevin Kurz The Philadelphia Phantoms tied a franchise record with their ninth straight victory, as they defeated the Binghamton Senators at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena, 3-2. R.J. Umberger scored the game-winner for the second straight night, as his goal in a shootout on Friday night against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins lifted Philadelphia to a victory. |

Peter Pappas earned the victory in net for the KiXX tonight, turning away six of the eight shots he faced, while Justin Neerhoff suffered the loss for San Diego with 12 saves on 15 chances. |
High School Ice Hockey: Friday, November 12, 2004 By Mike Costantino Chris Keyser scored the only three goals of the game and Derek Anderson stopped all sixteen shots as Washington Township defeated West Deptford 3-0 in high school ice hockey league play at Hollydell. Keyser scored a goal in each of the periods as Township never really was able to control the game, thanks to the efforts of Jacob DeHart in nets for West Deptford. DeHart faced 38 shots and only allowed the three goals. |
Ice Hockey Spotlight: Friday, November 12, 2004 By Al Cohen Peter White evened the score with 36.2 seconds left in the third period and rookie R.J. Umberger tallied the game-winning shootout goal as the Philadelphia Phantoms notched their eighth straight win with a 3-2 victory over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins tonight at the Wachovia Spectrum. Antero Niittymaki stopped 23-of-25 shots in 65 minutes of play, but surrendered shootout goals by the Penguins' second and third shooters - Kris Beech and Erik Christensen. Meanwhile, Mark Murphy and Tony Voce failed on Philadelphia's first two attempts, setting up an important attempt by Joni Pitkanen. |
Winning Ways (FYI):
Jumpmetrics Thursday, November 11, 2004 By Gregory "Graig" White Jumpmetrics is a publication that has good intentions, but it falls a little short of the mark when it comes to informing athletes who may have read other publications. What I mean that there are several other books that have come before this one and it doesn't really offer anything new on the subject. Don't get me wrong, if this is one of the first books and athlete or coach picks up then they are in for a real treat, the exercises are really well photographed, the reader should have no question as to how an exercise should be performed. |
High School Field Hockey: Thursday, November 11, 2004 By Susan Hall When the seeding has been decided for teams to compete for a group title, usually the top seeded teams are projected as the schools that will make it to the championship game. For Haddon Heights, that theory was completely thrown out of the window as they have been the team to beat. The eleventh seeded Garnets were trying to make it one more time in defeating the higher seed. Collingswood was that team standing in their way and they proved to be the better team on this day. Two unanswered goals by the Panthers allowed them to rally past Haddon Heights as the top seed in the South Jersey Group 2 championship game. Collingswood captured the title by a 2-1 margin. |
High School Soccer: Thursday, November 11, 2004 By Crystal Parker It was an emotional title game for both teams. Washington Township and Lenape were very familiar opponents and it was no secret who the scorers were on the team. Lenape has been successful coming away with the victory against the Minutemaids during the regular season, but it was Washington Township who took an early lead in this South Jersey Group 4 girl's soccer title game. Lenape quickly swung the momentum in their favor in the second half when two quick goals pushed them in the lead for good. Allison Williams and Lindsay Walsh provided all of the scoring needed to capture the 3-1 victory. |
High School Field Hockey: Tuesday, November 9, 2004 By Susan Hall It was a familiar place the Lady Quakers field hockey team has been for the past four years and that place was a trip to the sectional finals game that they would be hosting. With their 5-1 win over Freehold, Moorestown will go for the Central Jersey Group 3 title against Manasquan. The Quakers would break open a close game in the second half to finally put away any thoughts of being knocked out of this semifinals field hockey game. A one goal lead at half time turned into marginal victory for Moorestown whose defense was excellent and the offense just pure unlucky. |
High School Soccer: Tuesday, November 9, 2004 By Jerome Michaels The way this second round boy's South Jersey Parochial B soccer game seemed on the scoreboard, it would have appeared as if the second seeded Crusaders from Bishop Eustace and the sixth seeded Spartans from Holy Spirit where in an evenly matched game. There wasn't a single goal scored but Eustace was winning the momentum battle. During the second half of this game, one goal would make the difference and Kyle Miller was the player giving the Crusaders the game winner. Bishop Eustace would advance to the finals with their 2-0 victory and take on the defending champs St. Rose for the title. |
Volleyball Spotlight: Tuesday, November 9, 2004 By Bob Heller For the third consecutive year, University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Women’s Volleyball player Emily Roth (Dallastown High School/York, PA) was honored as a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference’s All Conference Volleyball Team Roth is one of two repeat selections from the 2003 First Team All-CACC Volleyball Team to be selected in 2004, joining senior Sherry Keech of Georgian Court. Emily was also selected as a second team member as a freshman in 2002. |
High School Field Hockey: Monday, November 8, 2004 By Susan Hall It's something that the Gloucester field hockey team has gotten use to, which is making it to the South Jersey Group 1 finals. For the past five years, the Lady Lions have been making it a habit showing up in four out of the past five years battling for the title. Gloucester will meet a familiar opponent in the finals all due to the 2-1 win over Salem in the semifinals. The Lions will be taking on St. Joseph for the third year in a row. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, November 8, 2004 By Mike Costantino Shawnee survived a two-man advantage by Williamstown in the final minutes of the game and held on for a 4-3 victory in high school ice hockey action played at the Skate Zone. Shawnee scored the lone goal of the first period as Williamstown got caught in a line change and TJ Flynn broke in all alone and his quick blast found the back of the net. Tom Ruiz would tie the game at 1-1 as he was fore-checking with his team down a man and he stole the puck and deposited it into the net. Shawnee scored a late power play goal and led 2-1 heading into the third period. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, November 8, 2004 By Mike Costantino Skating with just eight players the West Deptford Eagles defeated Timber Creek 6-4 at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Monday night. Led by a hat trick from Tyler Chellew, I was expecting tired legs in the third period, but playing with a lead seem to inspire these Eagles and they played a strong third period and Timber Creek seemed a step behind. West Deptford carried the play for the first two periods, out-shooting Timber Creek 33-6, and actually set a team record holding Timber Creek without a shot on goal in the second period. Gary Scott scored the first of his two goals in the opening period and Timber Creek despite being out-shot 16-6, led 1-0, thanks in large part to the play of goaltender Derek Cafasso. |
College Soccer: Monday, November 8, 2004 By Mike Ballard Junior back Brandon Bond completed a stellar season with the record-setting men’s soccer team, which closed the best campaign in school history with a 15-2-4 record. Bond, one of the team’s two center backs, helped Rutgers-Camden post program records for wins, the longest undefeated streak (17 games, with a 13-0-4 run) and its best goals-against average ever (0.64). The team also notched 11 shutouts, one shy of the school mark. Bond, who started all 21 games and added one assist, also collected a post-season honor when he was named to the Academic All-District II College Division Men’s Soccer Second Team on Nov. 4. In 59 career games, he owns four goals and three assists for 11 points. He will enter his senior season next fall within striking distance of the school record of 78 games played. |
