Ice Hockey Spotlight: Saturday, April 16, 2005 By Kevin Kurz The Philadelphia Phantoms scored twice in the first period and twice in the third, and Antero Niittymaki made 36 saves in defeating the Albany River Rats at Pepsi Arena, 4-0. With the win, Philadelphia crept to within one point of the Binghamton Senators for first place in the East Division. Binghamton plays later tonight against the Hershey Bears in its final game of the season, while the Phantoms conclude their regular season tomorrow at home against the Norfolk Admirals. |
Soccer Spotlight: Saturday, April 16, 2005 By David Deal The Philadelphia KiXX (21-17) dropped their regular-season home finale, 3-2, in overtime to the Kansas City Comets in front of 6,113 fans at the Wachovia Spectrum. Forward Jamar Beasley registered the game-winning goal on a dish from Miodrag Djerisilo at 1:31 of the extra stanza. Peter Pappas (18-15) took the loss in net for Philadelphia, turning away 15 of the 18 shots he faced, while Sanaldo (10-10) earned the victory for the Wave with 16 saves on 18 chances. |
High School Baseball: Friday, April 15, 2005 By Jerome Michaels Five times the players from Sterling greeted someone at home plate in celebration of a homerun. Two of those homerun celebrations occurred during the first inning thanks to Steve Williams and Chris Cook. With that much excitement occurring during the Silver Knights game at Gateway, one would expect Sterling to extend their winning streak to seven games in a row. A seven run first inning was more than enough for starting pitcher Drew Slickmeyer to pick up the win and a 10-1 victory over the Gators in a Colonial Conference competition. |
High School Softball: Friday, April 15, 2005 By Susan Hall Depending on which side field you are sitting on, it’s always nice to have one of those games were everything goes your way. Knowing that no team or game is an easy win, Sterling would have their way against Gateway in a Colonial Conference competition. Starting pitcher Paige Cauley delivered a one hitter for the Lady Knights and also came up big at the plate as well. A four run first inning was more than enough to win this game, but a five run fourth put this game away early for Sterling and cruised to a 12-0 victory. |
High School Lacrosse: Friday, April 15, 2005 By Clark Washington There are different ways a coach prepares their team before each and every game of the season. When the players take the field at the start of the game, Cherokee coach T.J. Viereck had to somewhat change his philosophy a bit after a loss. The Chiefs went down in defeat to a more experienced team in Ramapo in the last game and were taking on a new boy’s lacrosse team in the Cougars from Cherry Hill East. Knowing they were the heavy favorites to win, the Chiefs worked on their passing and motion plays rather than the finesse game. With that patience and letting the game come to them, Cherokee posted early goals by Matt Dunn, Eric Olson and Kevin Sterling to win this game by a 14-1 margin. |
Ice Hockey Spotlight: Friday, April 15, 2005 By Al Cohen Four different Phantoms scored and Antero Niittymaki made 21 saves to set a club record for wins in a season as Philadelphia posted a 4-1 victory over the Hershey Bears tonight at the Wachovia Spectrum. Jon Sim, Ben Stafford, Freddy Meyer and Mark Murphy all lit the lamp as Philadelphia won its third straight game and reached 47 wins for the first time since 1998-99. The Phantoms also remained three points behind first-place Binghamton in the East Division. |
Lacrosse Spotlight: Friday, April 15, 2005 By Jennifer Stefani The Philadelphia Wings (6-10) were defeated by the Minnesota Swarm by a score of 14-12 in their final game of the 2005 season at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, MN. Minnesota got the first goals of the game when Ryan Ward scored at 1:40 followed by a D'Arcy Berthiaume goal at 3:07. The Wings answered with two goals of their own when Jeff Ratcliffe scored at 4:34 and Keith Cromwell scored at 5:19. The teams traded goals (Teddy Jenner - MN, Dan Finck - PHI) before Philadelphia grabbed their first lead of the game on a power play goal by Andrew Burkholder at 14:39. At the end of the first quarter Philadelphia led by a score of 4-3. |
High School Softball: Thursday, April 14, 2005 By Crystal Parker While most of us were facing that tax deadline that seems to come out of nowhere, the same could be said about Northern Burlington’s luck with Rancocas Valley. Lisa Sweeney has been un-hittable for quite some time when facing the Greyhounds. Every scheduled game is marked on the calendar knowing that the Red Devils was that team to beat. This year was different as this extra inning softball game was decided by Lyndsay Mouse’s home run in the bottom of the tenth inning. With a runner on base, the dramatic ending of a 3-1 victory for Northern Burlington saw the softball sail over the left center fence. |
Ice Hockey Spotlight: Thursday, April 14, 2005 By Al Cohen The Philadelphia Phantoms of the American Hockey League today signed center Jeff Carter to an amateur tryout contact. The 6-3, 200-pound forward was the Philadelphia Flyers' first-round selection (11th overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Carter, who recently finished his junior season with Sault Ste. Marie of the Ontario Hockey League, also signed a tryout contract with the Phantoms last season and appeared in all 12 of their playoff games. He recorded four goals and an assist with a club-high two game-winning goals during his first action as a professional. |
High School Lacrosse: Wednesday, April 13, 2005 By Joyce Sagerty During the early minutes of the Northern Burlington traveling to Holy Cross girl’s lacrosse game, the Lady Greyhounds had tied this Burlington County League meeting at one apiece. Holy Cross began to keep the play mostly in the Greyhound’s end of the field which paid off. The closely competitive game gradually swung in the favor of the Lady Lancers as they scored five unanswered goals during the first half to widen their lead. Katie Foley accounted for five of the fourteen goals Holy Cross scored. With the Lancers 14-6 victory, they remain on top of the division with Moorestown right behind them in the standings. |
High School Softball: Wednesday, April 13, 2005 By Susan Hall Picking up the first win of the season gives a team a feeling of confidence. Getting that first divisional win obviously helps in the quest of becoming the top team in that division. For Seneca traveling to Bishop Eustace, both of these teams were looking for that first divisional victory. The Lady Crusaders were taking advantage of the situations put in front of them and scored twice in the first inning to jump out to an early lead. Four more runs scored in the second inning was more than enough for Bishop Eustace to pick up their first win of the season. Hannah Adams success at the plate contributed to the Crusaders’ 7-2 victory at home. |
Lacrosse Spotlight: Wednesday, April 13, 2005 By Jennifer Stefani Philadelphia Wings forward Andrew Burkholder was named the NLL's Rookie of the Week for his performances against the Toronto Rock this past weekend. Burkholder scored three goals and collected five loose balls in a 15-11 loss to Toronto at the Wachovia Center on Saturday, April 9. Burkholder also recorded four points (2G, 2A) in a 14-13 loss to the Rock at the Air Canada Centre on Sunday, April 10. |
High School Baseball: Tuesday, April 12, 2005 By Jerome Michaels Both Clearview and Highland were successful making the playoff last year and it would be safe to say that they wanted to get back there again this season. Yes it’s early, but it looks as if they both will finish the season with a record good enough to qualify. Both of these teams have the pitching and the defense to move far up the Tri-County Conference Royal Division. Clearview had won its first two games but would not win that next game as the Tartans’ bats came alive during the third and fourth innings. Starting pitcher Ryan Buchter watched three of his teammates Paul Painter, Dan Grandrino and Pat Faulls knock in three runs each to earn him the win and a 13-3 victory. |

High School Lacrosse: Monday, April 11, 2005 By Clark Washington The Olympic Conference battle between Camden Catholic and Cherry Hill West was a classic example of using your last at bats when it counts. Six lead changes, four doubles, one triple and a homerun had all of the makings of a dramatic win. With Camden Catholic regaining the lead by one run during their top half of the seventh inning, the Lions used their last at bat to the fullest. West not only tied the game, they also were able to pull out the victory when Frank Schmidt’s single drove home the winning run. Cherry Hill West won their first game of the early season by a 5-4 margin. |
High School Softball: Monday, April 11, 2005 By Crystal Parker When the Lady Chiefs from Cherokee took the field against Lenape in an Olympic Conference American Division softball game, it was a strange site to see their previous coach standing on the opposite side of the field. Mike Medrick, who had coached Cherokee to a 28-0 record and a couple of titles two years ago, was now the head coach for Lenape. But in this game, the players are the ones on the field working hard at coming away with the victory. Lenape would tie this game in the eighth inning to extend the game even further and then win it in the bottom the tenth when Jamie Moir’s single drove in her sister Kelsey for the winning run and a 4-3 victory. |
College Baseball: Monday, April 11, 2005 By Mike Ballard During a week with several outstanding candidates for Raptor of the Week, senior pitcher Matt Ulmer earns the honor after hurling 8-1/3 strong innings to lead the Rutgers-Camden baseball team to a 5-2 victory April 8 over the nation’s top-ranked team, previously-undefeated Rowan University. Ulmer, who improved his record to 4-0 and lowered his ERA to 2.95, walked one, struck out two and allowed six hits and two earned runs against the hard-hitting Profs. It was his 16th career win, one shy of the program record. |
Soccer Spotlight: Monday, April 11, 2005 By David Deal The Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) announced today that Philadelphia KiXX goalkeeper Peter Pappas has been named the League’s Goalkeeper of the Week for the seven-day period ending April 10, 2005. The honor is the fifth such accolade for the seven-time all-star this season, the most among all netminders in the seven-team League; Pappas also received the weekly award for the seven-day periods ending November 22, December 19, January 10 and January 31. He was named the League’s Goalkeeper of the Month for his play throughout the month of January. |
