Vineland Hands Holy Cross Their First Loss of Season Sunday, May 15, 2005 By Jason Brown The Michael Dengler Tournament was held at Florence this year and the undefeated Lancers from Holy Cross was the team most focused on to see if they would extend their streak to twenty-two games without a loss. An impressive come from behind win yesterday over Florence advanced the Lancers into the finals against the Fighting Clan from Vineland. It would be a rematch from last year and Vineland was looking to defeat the defending champs of this tournament. John Vasquez took the responsibility of trying to slow down the high powered Lancers and was successful. Vineland’s two run second inning were all the runs Vasquez needed as Vineland would had Holy Cross their first loss of the season by posting a 7-0 victory. |

Audubon's Late Rally Enough to Claim Title Friday, May 13, 2005 By Susan Hall For quite some time now, Audubon has been successful at defeating every opponent from the Colonial Conference. Their success even goes back several years as they have been the softball team on top of the conference at the end of the regular season. Sterling who was right behind them in the standings was looking to avenge their one run loss earlier in the season and came pretty close to achieving their goal. It would the defending champs snapping a scoreless tie through five innings by scoring all of their runs during the last two innings. Audubon would pick up their seventh victory of the season with a 6-0 victory. |

Phantoms Score Six Times in Third Period to Rally for 7-4 Win Over Penguins Philly Wins East Division Finals in Five Games Friday, May 13, 2005 By Al Cohen The Philadelphia Phantoms scored a team-record six goals in the third period tonight to rally for a 7-4 victory and a four-games-to-one win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in Game Five of the East Division Finals. Philadelphia avenged last year's six-game defeat to the Penguins in the division finals and advanced into the conference finals for the first time since 1999. The Phantoms will host Games One and Two of the Eastern Conference Finals next Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at the Wachovia Center against either the Providence Bruins or Lowell Lock Monsters. |

In This Day And Age Friday, May 13, 2005 By Gregory "Graig" White In this day and age where athletes are always looking for a way to get an edge, a way to enhance their ability to compete a tool that is starting to gain a little more acceptance is plyometrics. Plyometric training, which has its roots in Europe, is the name given to exercises that there thought to link strength with speed of movement to produce power. Which is generally the goal of most athletes, to create the ability to produce more power, which in turn helps them compete at a higher intensity, which if applied correctly will heighten an athletes chances for success. |

Thunder Tripped Up in 11 Innings, 4-3 Thursday, May 12, 2005 By Dan Loney Carlos Leon delivered an RBI triple in the 11th Inning to help the Reading Phillies to a 4-3 win over Trenton in Eastern League play. The game was the longest of the season for both teams at 3 hours, 47 minutes. Reading (15-19) jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a two-run homer by LF Ryan Fleming off Thunder starter Danny Borrell in the 3rd Inning. 1B Randy Ruiz added a solo homer in the 5th Inning, his 7th of the season. Borrell allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings in his second start with Trenton. |

Crusaders Squeeze Their Way into Postseason Wednesday, May 11, 2005 By Susan Hall Paul VI, Bishop Eustace and Camden Catholic have made the race for the Olympic Conference National Division title very interesting. Each of these teams has separated themselves from the rest of the pack as two of the teams are chasing the Irish from Camden Catholic in the standings. Well it was a chance for Paul VI and Bishop Eustace to battle it out on the softball field and this low scoring game would be decided by a single run and in extra innings. Bishop Eustace would score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning off the bat of Stefany Graham’s sacrifice bunt with Kelly Blake charging home with the 2-1 victory and a trip to the playoffs. |

DeSalvo Brilliant in 11-2 Win Wednesday, May 11, 2005 By Dan Loney Matt DeSalvo tossed eight shutout innings of one-hit baseball as the Thunder beat Reading, 11-2, on Wednesday night in Eastern League play. DeSalvo has now worked 15 consecutive scoreless innings. DeSalvo (3-1), who blanked Bowie over seven innings six days ago, allowed just a bunt hit to Reading SS Carlos Leon in the 3rd Inning. But a double play erased that runner. In fact, DeSalvo faced the minimum amount of batters over eight innings (24). He tied his career high in strikeouts with 11 in the game. |

Three Game Winning Streak for Gloucester Catholic Tuesday, May 10, 2005 By Susan Hall Two teams that were right in the middle of the standings making a push towards the playoffs were the Lady Pioneers from Clearview and the visiting Lady Rams from Gloucester Catholic. Clearview had won the first meeting between these two teams representing the Tri-County League Royal Division and needed to repeat their performance in order to pick up the all important win. Clearview would hold a brief one run lead heading into the middle innings only to see Gloucester Catholic rally during the third and fourth innings. Those runs were just enough for Brittany Carosina to pick up the win by defeating Clearview by an 8-6 margin. |

Rowell's Homerun Lifts Eustace over West Tuesday, May 10, 2005 By Jerome Michaels With the game tied at one apiece through five full innings, Bishop Eustace and Cherry Hill West needed to find a way to produce runs over the final two innings. Both teams would be successful scoring runs, but this game would be decided by the team scoring more runs than the other. The Crusaders would widen their one run game when Bill Rowell highlighted the top of the seventh inning with a three run homerun. Bishop Eustace would pick up the Olympic Conference win with an 8-4 victory at Cherry Hill West. |

Thunder Fall to Reading, 9-3 Tuesday, May 10, 2005 By Dan Loney Reading broke a 1-1 tie with five runs in the 6th Inning and three more in the 7th inning in a 9-3 win over the Thunder on Tuesday night in Eastern League play. Reading (14-18) was held to one run over the first five innings by Trenton starter Jeff Karstens. But they started the sixth with a single by CF Michael Bourn. After a single by RF Chris Roberson, and error by Karstens loaded the bases. 1B Randy Ruiz produced a run on a groundout followed by an RBI single from DH Jim Descahine and a two-run double by 3B Juan Richardson. Karstens (4-3) allowed six runs (four earned) on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings in the loss. |

Pair of Wings Named to 2005 National Lacrosse League All-Rookie Team Tuesday, May 10, 2005 By Jennifer Stefani Philadelphia Wings forward Andrew Burkholder and defenseman Dan Finck were named to the 2005 Edge Advanced All-Rookie Team as chosen by the governors, general managers and coaches of the NLL's ten member clubs. Burkholder recorded 31 points (17G, 14A) in eleven games for the Wings this season. The 5'9, 175 pound forward was named Rookie of the Week three times during the 2005 season and captured February's Rookie of the Month award. The St. Catharine's, ON native was acquired by the Wings in a trade with the Toronto Rock on December 3, 2004. |

Phantoms Post 5-3 Win Over Wilkes-Barre in Game Four of East Division Finals Tuesday, May 10, 2005 By Al Cohen Jon Sim and Mike Richards each recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Philadelphia Phantoms to a 5-3 victory over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins tonight in Game Four of the East Division Finals. With the win, the Phantoms assumed a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Game Five is set for Friday at 7:05 p.m. in Philadelphia. Antero Niittymaki stopped 26-of-29 shots for the Phantoms, who are trying to avenge last year's division finals loss to the Penguins in six games. Philadelphia also dropped six of 10 regular-season meetings with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season. |

Feeley Reaches Milestone in Win over Cougars Monday, May 9, 2005 By Stephanie Wright There are several reasons the Lady Panthers from Collingswood are in first place in the Olympic Conference Freedom Division. Experience, a winning attitude, good coaching and players that know how to win would be some of the highlights listed by any team that walks away at the end of a game victorious. Kate Feeley would be a good example of a player who knows how to win and score plenty of goals. When the Panthers traveled to Cherry Hill West, Feeley help Collingswood pick up the 17-11 victory by scoring her 100th and 101st goal in her career. |

Raptor of the Week: Carmen Zimmitt Monday, May 9, 2005 By Mike Ballard Junior Carmen Zimmitt turned in an outstanding performance at the New Jersey Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 7, winning the triple jump and finishing second in the long jump with a pair of program-record performances. She beat her own long jump record with a 17-7.75 and tied the mark in the triple jump (35-1.25). She also ran a leg on the school record-setting 4x100 relay team (48.31), which finished second, and competed in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, finishing fourth and third, respectively. This is the second Raptor of the Week honor this school year for Zimmitt, who also won the award for her play on the women’s basketball team Jan. 17. |

Thunder Fall to Reading in Philly Monday, May 9, 2005 By Dan Loney Reading scored five times against Thunder starter Ramon Ramirez in the first three innings and then held on to a 5-3 win over Trenton on Monday night in Eastern League play. The loss snapped Trenton's five game winning streak. Reading (13-18) used a pair of two-out hits in the 1st Inning to grab the lead. 1B Randy Ruiz singled home LF Ryan Fleming for a 1-0 lead. It was Ruiz's 20th RBI in his 16 games with Reading. The lead ran to 3-0 in the 2nd Inning on a two-run homer by 2B Brian Hitchcox. DH Jim Deschaine added a two-run double in the 3rd Inning for a 5-0 lead. Ramirez (0-1) was charged with five runs on seven hits in three innings in the loss. |
