Sunday, April 9, 2006

By Stu Franklin

April showers paid us a visit for most of the day on Saturday and the meteorologist suggests that the area is in much need for rain. Caught in the middle of the rain drops were the teams participating in the Rohrer Classic Baseball Tournament. Burlington Township, Haddon Township, Lower Cape May and Timber Creek were the teams participating in this year's tournament. The preliminary round started off with Burlington Township taking on Timber Creek at one location and at the same time at another location, Haddon Township hosted Lower Cape May. With Haddon Township and Timber Creek advancing to the finals of this tournament, it would be the Hawks from Haddon Township outlasting the Chargers to win it all.

Rutgers-Camden Competes at Knecht Cup Regatta

Saturday, April 8, 2006

By Mike Ballard
RutgersCamden Sports Correspondent

A cold, rainy, windy day played havoc with the Knecht Cup Regatta over the weekend on the Cooper River, causing Saturday's races to be postponed in the early afternoon and adding the remainder of the competition to Sunday's schedule. The Rutgers University-Camden crew team placed two boats in the finals, but due to the confusing schedule only one boat, the Men's Varsity Four Div. II/III team, was able to compete. The Rutgers-Camden Women's Division III Varsity Four team, along with another boat, missed the finals in the long delay and rearranged schedule. Another boat from Rutgers-Camden, the Men's Club Four, had to be scratched due to the scheduling changes.

Morgan Provides the Arm Power for Audubon

Friday, April 7, 2006

By Joyce Sagerty
SJSports Special Correspondent

It all begins with the pitcher on the mound at least concentrating on getting the ball over the plate with some velocity for a strike. When that confidence begins to build up, the pitcher begins to add a bit more arm swing behind the pitch. Heather Morgan for the Green Wave from Audubon was able to strike out ten batters against Haddon Heights this afternoon. With Morgan's success on the mound, the offense would provide an early three run lead that the Lady Garnets were unable to overcome. The Wave would post a 7-2 victory in conference play.

Cherokee Continues to Dominate

Thursday, April 6, 2006

By Clark Washington
SJSports Special Correspondent

With the start of a new season, the Cherokee Chiefs boys' lacrosse team would be looking to improve on advancing further into the post season tournament and that would include defeating the Renegades from Shawnee. For several years, Shawnee has not only defeated the Chiefs in every game but they have also dominated the sport. Well, with the new season upon us, new beginnings can occur and the Chiefs finally were able to defeat Shawnee earlier in the week. So that was not good news for the Fighting Irish from Camden Catholic who traveled to Cherokee looking to pick up their second win. Matt Dunn was able to muscle his way past the defense and score a total of five goals helping the Chiefs pick up the 15-2 victory.

Lady Herd Thunder Past Gateway

Thursday, April 6, 2006

By Susan Hall
SJSports Special Correspondent

Every season, there are always several teams that start off the season on a winning note that surprises a few people. One of those teams getting noticed early would be the Thundering Herd from Woodbury. Freshman pitcher Liz Carter has helped Woodbury's softball team begin the season win their first three games of the season and she has done so not just with her pitching. Before today's game against Gateway, the freshman hurler picked up the win as the starting pitcher and recorded a home run in each of those games. Against the Gators, Carter would not record her third home run of the season, but she would be on the winning side of a 14-0 victory. Woodbury has improved to 3-0 on the season.

Norfolk Catches Up To Phantoms

Wednesday, April 5, 2006

By Mike Thornton
Philadelphia Phantoms Correspondent

The Phantoms held a 1-0 lead for more than half the game, but the Norfolk Admirals eventually turned up the heat and took a 3-1 win at Norfolk Scope on Wednesday night. The loss mathematically eliminates the Phantoms from playoff contention. For yet another night, the Phantoms struck first with continued optimum efficiency on the power play. Matt Ellison hit paydirt from the left-side circle with Philadelphia's first shot of the night, bouncing the puck off the leg of Norfolk netminder Adam Munro and in for the 1-0 lead just 2:16 into the game.

Tuesday, April 4, 2006

By Susan Hall
SJSports Special Correspondent

It's always nice to get that first win of the season and both Lindenwold and Cherry Hill West were looking for during their second game of the season. Shaina Bradley would get the start on the mound for the Lady Lions from Cherry Hill West and she would get plenty of support. Kelly Smith would give Bradley an early lead when she hit her homerun early in the non-league softball game. The Lions would score all of their runs they would need during the first three innings. Cherry Hill West would pick up the 14-1 victory and even their record to keep pace in the Olympic Conference Patriot Division.

Raptor of the Week: Michelle Schlichtig

Monday, April 3, 2006

By Mike Ballard
RutgersCamden Sports Correspondent

Michelle Schlichtig captures her second Raptor of the Week honor in three weeks after posting a 2-0 record and one save in three pitching performances last week. Schlichtig started with a five-inning no-hitter against John Jay College of Criminal Justice, recording all 15 outs on strikes for her fifth career no-hitter at Rutgers-Camden. Combined with her previous outing, a perfect game against Keystone March 25, it extended her no-hit streak to 10-1/3 consecutive innings. She extended that string to 14 innings before settling for a three-hitter in a 3-1 victory April 1 over defending New Jersey Athletic Conference champion William Paterson University. Schlichtig came back to save the nightcap of a 3-2 win over Paterson, adding a solo home run in that game.
