South Jersey Baseball:
Delmarva Pushes Across Winning Run In Tenth Inning

After heavy rain forced the postponement of Saturday evening's game, the Lakewood BlueClaws played the Delmarva Shorebirds in a Sunday afternoon game at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Maryland. It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon with temperatures in the mid 60's and light winds. Lakewood entered this game riding a five-game winning streak after sweeping four straight from the Greensboro Grasshoppers. The BlueClaws were looking to improve on their 5-9 record. Meanwhile, Delmarva entered this game with an 8-5 record, trailing the Lexington Legends by one-half game in the Northern Division of the South Atlantic League.

Ware Honored by Basketball Officials with Sportsmanship Award

University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Head Women's Basketball Coach Nate Ware (Yeadon, PA) was honored at the 2nd annual Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) basketball officials' end of year dinner on Monday night with the 2005-2006 Sportsmanship Award. The award, which is voted on by the CACC women's basketball officials is presented to the CACC head women's basketball that is the most-sportsmanlike on the court during the course of the season. This is the second consecutive year that Ware has been recognized by the CACC women's basketball officials for his sportsmanlike conduct.

Gloucester Bounces Back Against Pennsville

The Tri-County Conference Classic Division had two teams that were undefeated so far and one of those teams were the Lady Eagles from Pennsville. Woodstown would be the other team in first place ahead of Pennsville, Schalick and the Lady Lions from Gloucester. After having their five game winning streak snapped, the Lions would host the undefeated Eagles in search of rebounding from a tough loss earlier in the week. Gloucester would overcome an early deficit in a big way by scoring nine unanswered runs against the Eagles over four innings. When the final out was recorded by starting pitcher Sam Dobleman, the Lions would be on the winning side of a 10-6 victory.

Eastern Takes Previous Loss Out On Kingsway

It's never any fun losing a game to any opponent. The coaching staff as well as other players will sometime ease that bad feeling by pointing out all of the good things that happened during a game. Playing hard, playing smart and not giving up could be found on the field could be found when the Lady Vikings from Eastern hosted Kingsway. For Eastern, they had loss a close one goal game yesterday to Washington Township. Eastern would score fourteen first half goals and cruise to a 20-4 win over Kingsway in a non-league girls' lacrosse competition.

Calmey Nets Three as Lenape Defeats West

Two teams from different divisions were looking to pick an all important win. So far this season, the Patriot division has several teams all within a win or two of becoming the top team. The Lions from Cherry Hill West is in the thick of things and they were looking to pick up some momentum at home against the Indians from Lenape. Both of these teams are chasing division leaders who have demonstrated the ability to score plenty of goals, but this game would decided by Lenape during the second quarter. Scott Calmey would score two of his three goals before the half helping Lenape shutout Cherry Hill West by a 4-0 score.

Brand's Grand Slam Lifts William Paterson to Ninth-Inning Rally Past Rutgers-Camden

Junior catcher Ryan Brand hit a two-out grand slam in the top of the ninth inning, capping a six-run frame to rally the William Paterson University baseball team to an 8-6 victory over Rutgers University-Camden in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here April 20. The Pioneers improve to 21-10 overall and 8-4 in the NJAC, while the Scarlet Raptors fall to 19-11 and 6-5. William Paterson entered the ninth inning staring at a 6-2 deficit, but the Pioneers opened the frame with back-to-back singles by junior center fielder Rick Pignatello and junior second baseman Wayne Poppe. Pignatello went 4-for-5 with three runs and two stolen bases on the day to spark the Paterson attack from the leadoff spot.

Tenth Inning Run Pushes Camden Catholic Past Kingsway

For seven full innings, this game just could not be decided as neither team was able to score. Starting pitchers Alyssa O'Connell for Camden Catholic and Jamie Minix for Kingsway were able to rely on their defenses helping them preserve the scoreless tie after regulation. The Lady Dragons appeared to take advantage of a situation that resulted in two runs during the eighth inning, but Camden Catholic would respond to extend this game even further into extra innings. Finally with a runner in scoring position during the bottom of the tenth inning, Shannon Morlock single scored the deciding run to defeat Kingsway by a 3-2 margin.

Narkiewicz Belts Two Home Runs For Seneca

Even before the first pitch was thrown by the opposing team, the coaching staff had already gone over which player or players have the potential of making a big difference in a game. So when a player surprisingly comes through with a big hit, add another player on the must watched list. Whether it really was a big surprise to the other players on Seneca's softball team, Kim Narkiewicz crushed two home runs to dead center field highlighting the Golden Eagles 7-2 win at Cherry Hill West.

Rocco Completes Her Mission for Bishop Eustace

The Olympic Conference is loaded with talented players all trying to accomplish their individual goals for their team. No one team has totally run away from the rest in their division leaving the door wide open for each and every team to make some sort of movement toward the top. When starting pitcher Alex Rocco got the call for Bishop Eustace, her goal would be to keep visiting Pennsauken from getting batters on base as much as possible limiting any major rallies. The Crusaders' defense were able to provide plenty of support for Rocco as Bishop Eustace posted a 5-1 victory in an inter-division match up.

Raptor of the Week: Kathleen Dreitlein

Sophomore first baseman Kathleen Dreitlein powered the No. 8-ranked Rutgers-Camden softball team to four straight New Jersey Athletic Conference victories this week, extending the Lady Raptors’ winning streak to 14 games. Dreitlein went 8-for-13 (.615) with four runs, four doubles, six RBIs and one walk in the four games to extend her hitting streak to seven games. She went 3-for-6 in a twinbill sweep of No. 2-ranked Rowan April 11, then 5-for-7 at Ramapo April 15. Included in her big week was a 3-for-4 Game Two against Ramapo, including a two-run double to spark the Raptors’ winning four-run sixth-inning rally. Overall on the season, Dreitlein is batting .455 with 22 runs, 19 RBIs and a team-leading 12 doubles.
