South Jersey Soccer:
Ocean City Narrows the Gap

Sunday, June 4, 2006

By Josh Hakala
Ocean City Barons Director of Public Relations

The Ocean City Barons began Sunday's match eight points behind the Westchester Flames in the Northeast Division, and by the final whistle, they had pulled three points closer with a 2-1 win. It was the first of four straight road games for the Barons, and the second game in as many nights for the Flames. With the victory, the Barons (2-1-2, 8 points) find themselves in second place in the division, five points behind Westchester (4-2-1, 13 points). Much like the first game of the year, the Barons struck shortly after the opening whistle, when Jeremy Ortiz (Mt. Laurel, NJ), making his first start of the year, scored on a cross from Byron Carmichael (Lumberton, NJ) in the 3rd minute. It was his team-leading third strike in the last two matches for Ortiz, having scored both goals in the second half of last week's 2-0 win over Albany.

Bishop Eustace Uses Late Rally to Win in Extra Innings

Saturday, June 3, 2006

By Vincent Lewis
SJSports Staff Writer

It was a game that appeared to be in the grasp of their opponent. For most of this South Jersey Non-Public B semifinals game played in Brooklawn, the Rams from Gloucester Catholic clearly had the momentum and a five run lead over Bishop Eustace with two more innings remaining. The Rams, who were the second seed in the bracket, scored in four of the first five innings demonstrating their ability to produce runs. Third seeded Bishop Eustace's momentum slowly increased and rallied for five runs, which included Dewey Oriente's three run triple, during their last two at bats to send this game into extra innings. Relief pitcher Andrew Del Rossi continued to keep the Rams off the scoreboard giving the Crusaders a chance to win this semifinals game. Mike Plakis' solo home run during the ninth proved to be the game winner and Bishop Eustace advanced to the finals with a 13-10 win.

Vince Faison and Bronson Sardinha each homered to help the Thunder to a 5-2 win over Reading on Friday night. The game was called in the bottom of the seventh due to rain. Reading (21-32) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning as they collected five hits off Thunder starter Danny Borrell. Four of those hits were infield hit, including a pair of bunt singles. The runs scored on a sacrifice fly by DH Jim castellano and an RBI single by RF Matt Padgett. But those would be the only runs allowed by Borrell (2-3) on the night. Haddon Township Captures S.J. Group 2 Title

Thursday, June 1, 2006

By Susan Hall
SJSports Special Correspondent

The road to the group finals would have been a Cinderella story for either of these two teams. For Haddon Township and Overbrook, neither one of these teams were supposed to have advanced past the higher seeds to participate in the group finals, let alone win it. This year's run at the South Jersey Group 2 softball title proves that no matter what your regular season record may be, qualifying for the tournaments gives a team one chance at being the best. Haddon Township's late lead was erased by the Lady Rams to send this championship game into extra innings. It would take a two out hit by Brianne Moore during the bottom of the ninth inning to give Haddon Township the 3-2 victory and the group title.

Shawnee's Defense Slows Down Washington Township

Tuesday, May 30, 2006

By Joyce Sagerty
SJSports Special Correspondent

It was a match up between two good girl's lacrosse teams that have demonstrated their abilities at scoring goals at will. Good speed, nice passing and individual effort could be found on the lacrosse field at Shawnee High School. The second seeded Lady Renegades were hosting Washington Township who were positioned in the third seed of the South Jersey Group A girls' semifinals. This game was a bit different than the rest as goalie Allie Shropshire for Shawnee was able to stop all but three shots that headed her way. The Renegades, behind Becca Perkins seven goal performance built a lead that put this game away early. With Shawnee's 12-3 victory, they will now travel to Moorestown to take on the number one seeded Quakers.

Balanced Scoring for Moorestown Moves Quakers in Familiar Territory

Tuesday, May 30, 2006

By Stephanie Wright
SJSports Special Correspondent

It's no secret that if you want to be the best, you must at least compete against the Lady Quakers from Moorestown. With so many players on the team that have the ability to score from anywhere on the field, a team must be able to match Moorestown's talent both offensively and defensively. The fifth seeded Lady Cougars from Cherry Hill East had just won a thrilling come from behind victory and were looking to continue that momentum against the top seed in the South Jersey Group A girls' lacrosse bracket. On this day, twelve different players for Moorestown would score at least a goal and the Quakers would advance to the finals with their 20-1 victory. Moorestown will now host the second seeded Lady Renegades from Shawnee for the title.

Haddon Township Moves into Group 2 Finals

Tuesday, May 30, 2006

By Susan Hall
SJSports Special Correspondent

It was on their wish list of items they wanted to accomplish but a game had to be played in order to receive their rewards. The Lady Hawks from Haddon Township knew that Schalick would not make it easy for them to advance to the South Jersey Group 2 finals. The Hawks would have to play their game and that would be to continue to hit the ball hard and the runs will come. Eight of their runs would come at the right time as Haddon Township posted a 9-6 victory over the Lady Cougars from Schalick. The Hawks will travel to the group finals against Overbrook.
