Williamstown's Defense Ends Late Rally

Saturday, September 23, 2006

By Clark Washington
SJSports Special Correspondent

For nearly the entire four quarters of Williamstown's football game at Highland, the defense had an answer in stopping the Tartans from scoring any points. The Braves would build a ten point advantage with less than a minute remaining and it appeared as if they would pick up their second win in a row. But a touchdown reception and the recovery of an onside kick setup Highland's last chance drive and attempt to pull out a victory at home. Williamstown's defense would come up big again with an interception and run off the final seconds of the game. With their 10-7 win, the Braves will remain on top of the Tri-County Conference Royal Division.

By Bob Heller

For so long, the Lady Panthers from Collingswood field hockey team has been one of those squads that opponents were either a bit nervous competing against or knew they were in for a hard fought battle. The Panthers' success has been dominating but with every new season, change is always waiting to occur. In a Colonial Conference match-up between the Lady Garnets from Haddon Heights and Collingswood, it would be the Garnets that were able to get the only goals of this game. Haddon Heights would score once in the first half and once in the second and defeat Collingswood 2-0. The win pushed the Garnets record to three wins and three losses early in this season.

By Jerome Michaels

When that number of players goes beyond three, you can count on your team competing in every game that team steps onto the field. The Eagles from Winslow Township, traveling to Triton to take on the Mustangs, were looking to pick up their fourth win in a row. During the first half of this Olympic Conference Patriot Division boys' soccer game, neither team was able to score. Clearview has started out their season capitalizing on their opportunities and it shows with the success they have been through. With four of their first five game played at home, the Pioneers have won every game to start out their season. Only their second road game played, the Tartans from Highland would be their next test. Clearview would get their first scoring chance redirected away and proved to be a momentum builder for the home team. Two quick goals by Highland proved to be enough for their defense to hold the Pioneers to a single goal. Clearview would rally, but the Tartans would survive and post a 2-1 victory.

Field position is extremely important in any sport especially if a team wishes to score against their opposition. But when Mother Nature decides to add a good strong wind, a team needs to take full advantage of their possessions. Paulsboro, traveling to Woodbury to take on the Herd in a Colonial Conference boys' soccer game, went against the norm when they scored the only goal of the first half against the wind. Both teams would adjust during the second half and this game had to be decided in double overtime. That's when the hard fought battle for both teams would finally end when Keith Davis gave the home team the 4-3 win when his shot found the net right at the start of the second extra period.
