Hornet's Defense Stings the Panthers

It has been a season of come from behind wins in the league and the Panthers from Camden have come away with several late victories. For the host, the Hornets from Pemberton, most of their focus would be on next week's opponent in an anticipated battle between the top two teams in their division. During the first half of the "Senior Day" game, Pemberton appeared to be in full control at the start of the second half leading by two touchowns. Camden would claw their way back into this game, but a late rally would be halted by the Hornets swarming defense. Pemberton would be able to sit on their 20-12 lead late in the game and pick up their Burlington/Olympic Patriot Division win setting up next week's showdown.

Camden Catholic Shuts Down the Cougars

With the official pairings for the upcoming postseason playoffs being released on Monday, two teams would get a chance to use today's game as a tune up to the beginning of the NJSIAA field hockey tournament. The Lady Lions from Cherry Hill West and the Lady Irish from Camden Catholic both have clinched a position for the post season and had the opportunity to compete in a regular season game. The defense for Camden Catholic was able to keep the Lions off the scoreboard allowing the offense to put the only points on the scoreboard. Michelle Vittese scored two goals for the Irish helping the team to post the 4-0 win. Jess Pandola earned the shutout in goal for Camden Catholic.

Jessica Giordano's Overtime Goal Lifts Ramapo over Rutgers-Camden

Ramapo College junior midfielder Jessica Giordano scored the only goal of the game with 33 seconds remaining in the second overtime to power the Roadrunners over Rutgers University-Camden, 1-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women's soccer game here Saturday. The victory lifts Ramapo to 7-8-2 overall and 2-6 in the NJAC, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 9-7-1 and 2-5. With time winding down in a scoreless battle, Ramapo senior midfielder Nicole Giancaspro sent a cross from the right wing to an open Giordano, who carried into the top of the box and hit a shot inside the left post for the winning goal. It was her second goal of the year and first game-winning goal. It also was the second assist for Giancaspro.

Tennis Spotlight:
Bedway, Leonard fall in Quarterfinals of CACC Individual Tournament

Amanda Bedway and Sarah Leonard each won their opening match at the CACC Individual Tournament Championship before losing in the quarterfinals at the Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis Center in Philadelphia yesterday afternoon. USP's women's tennis team was also awarded the CACC Team Sportsmanship Award in balloting done by the league's seven coaches. Bedway and Leonard started the day by teaming up for the doubles competition. The Devils #1 doubles team opened the competition with tough match against Beka Elliott and Lori Pick of Philadelphia University, winning 9-8 (9-7). Bedway and Leonard then fell to the top doubles team in the tournament, Lauren Neill and Rupali Parekh of Holy Family University, 8-3. Parekh and Neill later advanced to the championship match.

Women Harriers Place Fourth at CACC Championships

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, seeking their second consecutive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championship, placed fourth overall at this morning's meet at Carousel Park in Wilmington, Delaware. The Devils finished with 105 points, 18 behind third place Philadelphia University and 20 behind second place Felician College. Georgian Court University won the meet for the fifth time in the seven-year history of the championship. In those seven years, the Devils have never finished any lower than fourth place. Joy Aifuwa paced the Devils, finishing in second place overall with a time of 21:17.00, nine seconds behind overall winner Amanda Scibetta of Felician College. Joy earned All-CACC honors for the third consecutive year with her second place finish. In those three years, Aifuwa has finished no lower than third place overall, coming in second in 2004 and third last year.

Willey and Willard Earn All-CACC Honors

Nick Willey and Matt Willard finished in the top ten overall at today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship at Carousel Park in Wilmington, Delaware as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's cross country team placed seventh overall amongst the 10 schools competing. Willey's and Willard's (finish earned them All-CACC honors for the 2006 season. The All-CACC Men's Cross Country Team consists of the top 15 finishers in the CACC Championship race. Willey finished fourth overall with a time of 28:34.97. Willard placed eighth overall with a time of 28:54.38. For Willey, this is his second consecutive season earning all conference honors.

Collingswood Closes Out Season with a Win

Each year there are players on a team from a conference that works hard both on and off the field looking to improve on their individual skills. Despite their team's record, those efforts alone make it hard to find indications that a team is not giving their "all" in their quest to come away with a win. Today's opponents, the Lady Lions from Lindenwold traveling to Collingswood, were looking to finish their season on a winning note. This would be the Panthers last game of the season and they would end it positively. Avery Roof scored twice for Collingswood helping the Panthers capture the 6-1 victory.

Wenderoth Records 1000th Dig as Devils Lose to Goldey Beacom

Lindsey Wenderoth became just the second women's volleyball player in school history to record 1,000 career digs as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match, 3-0 to Goldey Beacom College last night in Wilmington, Delaware. USP lost the first game, 30-16, the second 30-19 and the third 30-26. The loss drops the devils' record to 8-14 overall and 5-8 in league play. Goldey Beacom improved to 12-11 overall and 11-4 in league play.

Aifuwa Named ECAC Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week

University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's cross country runner Joy Aifuwa has been named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division II Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week for the week ending October 16, 2006. Aifuwa is the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's cross country runner to earn ECAC honors this season. Joy earned the CACC Women's cross country Runner of the Week honors for the fourth straight week and the fifth time overall earlier this week. The junior harrier took third place overall at Saturday's Cabrini Invitational, completing the 5,000-meter course in 20:09.24 Aifuwa's time was her best 5K performance of the 2006 season.

Moorestown Launches 62 Shots in win over Eastern

Moorestown scored three goals in the final seven minutes of the game to rally to defeat Eastern 3-1 in action played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Eastern goaltender Evan Cohen did everything he could in facing 62 shots and not allowing a goal until the seven minute mark of the final period. Earlier in the game he made several point blank saves to keep the game scoreless. Moorestown goalie Keith Mulligan was doing his part stopping all 28 Eastern shots through two periods. The Vikings broke through early in the third period after some hard work by Jon Hayes and Eric Miller to keep the puck in the zone, with Joel Romberger scored his first goal of the season.

Cherry Hill West rolls over West Deptford

Bret Cybulski, Billy Berenato and DJ Nork each scored two goals as Cherry Hill West defeated West Deptford 8-3 in Tier 2 action played on Monday night at the Skate Zone. Luke DeHart scored twice for West Deptford. West got contributions both on the power play, connecting three times and once scoring a shorthanded goal. Nork got things going in the opening two minutes, with West Deptford already down a man, his quick shot caught Evan Betz off guard and West led 1-0. The with West Deptford down 2 men, Monahan converted a pass from Cybulski for a 2-0 lead, then right before the second penalty expired, Cybulski fed Monahan and the lead was 3-0.

Raptor of the Week: Travis Stewart

Sophomore Travis Stewart captured the individual championship at the Cabrini Cross Country Invitational with a meet record of 27:07.37 to lead Rutgers-Camden to the team title Oct. 14 in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park. Stewart set the pace and the rest of the Rutgers-Camden cross country team followed. Stewart led the 87-runner field with the 8K meet record of 27:07.37 to edge out his freshman teammate Jonathan Salamon as the Scarlet Raptors captured the team title at the Cabrini Cross Country Invitational Oct. 14 at Fairmount Park in Philadelphia. Rutgers-Camden finished with 64 points to top the 10-team field, 19 ahead of second place Keystone College.
