Riversharks Kid's Club Baseball Clinic and Picnic

Saturday, July 21, 2001

By Gregory "Graig" White
SJSports Staff Writer

On what was a great day for baseball the Camden Riversharks hosted the 1st Annual "Riversharks Kid's Club Baseball Clinic and Picnic". It was well attended by parents and kids alike, and by the looks of things it was hard to tell who was having the better time. Riversharks players and front office staff, as well as coaches and players from local high schools joined together to show the members of the Kid's Club valuable skills that will help them succeed at the game of baseball.

South Jersey Baseball History:
Driving Them Home, The All-Time RBI Producers

Tuesday, June 12, 2001

By Charlie Schick
South Jersey Baseball Historical Society

Every good baseball squad has that one guy they can depend on in the clutch. A player they can count on to deliver the big hit or key sacrifice fly to drive-in an all important run or two. Many times he is the team’s leading home run producer, but that is not always the case. Most importantly, this guy is his team’s clutch RBI man, the player that always seems to deliver under pressure. Dependable, consistent, game after game, he seems to come through in the clutch and more often than not, he carries his teammates to victory.

Riversharks Bats Were Silent Against Nashua

Monday, June 4, 2001

By Jerome Michaels
SJSports Special Correspondent

The sound of a wooden bat connecting to a fastball could be heard at Camden Waterfront in Southern New Jersey, not at Veteran Stadium. With baseball being played at Campbell's Field, the Camden Riversharks were going for two straight against the Nashua Pride. Yesterday, Camden came away with a 4-1 victory to bring their record to .500 baseball. Marty Janzen started the game for the Pride and kept the Riversharks off the scoreboard to capture the win for Nausha 8-2.

Wednesday, May 23, 2001

By Vincent Lewis
SJSports Staff Writer

Moorestown was able to finally play baseball with their extended layoff. The weather didn't help with more rain in the forecast. Today, this game would be played as Woodstown and host Moorestown participated in a South Jersey Group 2 playoff game. The Quakers would use three pitchers in their first round playoff game and a fifth inning homerun by Luke Hadden highlighted Moorestown's 4-1 victory at home.

The 20 Something Strikeout Artists

Wednesday, May 23, 2001

By Charlie Schick
South Jersey Baseball Historical Society

On Tuesday night, May 8, 2001, a 6'10" flame-thrower by the name of Randy Johnson used his slider and blazing fastball to register 20 strikeouts against the Cincinnati Reds. Thus, the Arizona Diamondbacks ace southpaw became the third major league hurler and first left-hander to strike out 20 batters in nine innings. He will, however, not go into the record books as doing so, because he left the contest tied 1 to 1 after 9 innings and since the Diamondbacks won the game 4 to 3 in 11 innings, his totals will be imprisoned in the extra innings records.

Last month, April 18, 2001 to be exact, San Francisco Giants left-fielder Barry Bonds hit his 500th major league home run and thus joined an elite group of 16 power hitters who make up the big league's greatest home run hitters of all time. Not only is Bonds the 17th member of this 500-plus homer club, he is also the 9th outfielder among them.

Monday, May 7, 2001

By Vincent Lewis
SJSports Staff Writer

The Cherokee Chiefs baseball team arrived at Highland High School with an impressive 11-2 record and onto top of the Olympic Conference, Patriot Division. Right behind them were the Tartans, getting a chance to increase their divisional record to 5-2 and capturing a tie with the Chiefs. Dane Mason was very impressive getting the start against Highland (10-4), but Mike Cummings matched his opponent keeping the Chiefs off the scoreboard. Cummings pitched a complete game shut out, striking out 10 batters on route to a 2-0 win at home.

Nichols Hits For The Cycle Keys Entwistle Fifth Victory

Tuesday, May 1, 2001

By Art Redd
SJSports Staff Writer

Image the coach letting you know you're the starting pitcher for yet another important game for your team. Standing on the pitcher's mound with blue skies and warm temperatures, you're just anxious to get that first pitch over the plate. Well Shawnee's Dan Entwistle took full advantage of the situation as he held Highland to five scoreless innings in route to an 11-5 victory. Entwistle received plenty of support from his teammates as the Renegades jumped out to an 8-0 lead which was highlighted by Jeff Nichols 2-run homer. Nichols went 5 for 5 and also hit for the cycle (2 singles, double, triple and home run).

All Time Strikeout Pitchers The Gunfighters Of The Diamond

Monday, April 9, 2001

By Charlie Schick
South Jersey Baseball Historical Society

Opening day at Yankee Stadium, April 2, 2001, saw New York's Roger Clemens tie or break, depending on which historical stats you accept, Walter Johnson's American League all-time strikeout record. The uncertainty of Clemens accomplishment occurred because the record book states Johnson's total strikeouts is 3508, whereas Total Baseball Encyclopedia reports his mark as 3,509. So, the only thing certain right now is that Roger will establish the American League record on his next starting assignment.
