Football Commentary:
I'll Really Miss Doing That Eagles Cheer

By Edward Owen
A South Jersey Philadelphia Eagles Fan

It so frustrating rooting for the Eagles. Every year they have a competitive team but never enough to go all the way. The Vermeil years are a distant memory and this version of the green and white seems to be missing some key parts. Free agency is also having a negative effect on the fans, as you never know who is going to be playing tight end for the Eagles. Players and teams wander from place to place and never seem to find what they are looking for.

I don't watch all the games now. It's usually a mixture of housework and football. The players celebrate after making routine tackles. However, it is still fun to go over to th stadium on Sundays and root for the home team. It's like one tribe against another. Our colors are stronger than yours. When we lose, it's personal. The sky seems a little darker.

Pro football faces some large challenges in the next few years.Astronomical salaries, franchises moving, fan hooliganism and others. I hope it survives. I'll really miss doing that Eagles cheer.

Camden's Comeback With A Never Say Quit Attitude

By Art Redd

Unbelievable game. If you left the game early against the Overbrook Rams and the Camden Panthers on Saturday, you missed a very good game. Coach Reggie Lawrence was very animated in telling his players that they had to win this game. He also told them to keep their heads in the game and don't give up. This was when his Panthers were down 24 - 0. Each time his team would struggle on offense, he continued to have faith in his team. Well, that faith got Camden (6-1) an overtime victory over Overbrook (4-3).

This Tri-County Conference homecoming meeting had all the makings of a good football game. The match up between the Gloucester Catholic Rams at the Gloucester City Lions was dedicated to the late Joseph G. Kelly. He was a loved history teacher and assistant principal for Gloucester City High School for over 25 years.

The capacity crowd didn't let the early rains stop them from enjoying this city series game. All fans were definitely behind their schools and wanted to be heard.

Cross Not Overwhelmed By Ranking

Courtesy of The Trend Community Newsmagazine

While most coaches dread to begin the season in the hotseat, Holy Cross coach Tom Maderia insists that he won't wake up in a cold sweat worrying about being the preseason No. 1 team in South Jersey.

Holy Cross gets the nod as the Trend's preseason No. 1 team based on an experienced unit that returns from last year's 9-2 team that won the Burlington County Liberty Division and advanced to the Parochial 4 finals before losing to powerful Bergen Catholic, 48-28.

The Lancers have the ability to strike quickly on the ground or in the air. Holy Cross has size, speed and savvy. Maderia, who enters his sixth season at Holy Cross with a 37-14 record, has quickly established himself as one of the top coaches in South Jersey.

Athlete Spotlight:
Colleges After Haddonfield's Roberts

Courtesy of
The Trend Community Newsmagazine

For an ex-soccer player, Ryan Roberts hasn't done too badly in football. Now a senior at Haddonfield, the 6-foot-2, 220-pound fullback-defensive end, is one of the most desirable football recruits in South Jersey.

Colleges are enamored with his athletic ability. Roberts recently ran a 4.78 40-yard dash. He is quick enough to get by bigger offensive linemen and strong enough to throw them out of his path.

Roberts has also impressed colleges with his work in the classroom. A strong student at one of South Jersey's top academic institutions, Roberts has already scored 1,250 on the SAT.

No wonder schools such as Wake Forest, North Carolina State, Rutgers, Syracuse and Virginia Tech had already offered him a football scholarship prior to the beginning of practice this season.
