After coming off a tough loss to Washington Township, the Cherokee baseball team pounded out 4 home runs against a deflated Edgewood pitching staff. The wind was blowing out to left in this game. Cherokee scored 9 runs in the first two innings, seven of which were scored on Phil D'Alonzo's first two plate appearances. He hit a 3 run monster home run in the first and a grand slam in the second inning.

The Cherokee Chiefs won their second consecutive JVB championship by defeating Washington Township 6-3 and finished the season 20-0. Shawn Zahaczewski led the Cherokee offense with three goals and an assist, Brandon Gould with a goal and two assists, and Dan Redner with two assists. Mike Duczkowski led Township with two goals. Township would score first as Duczkowski scored on a feed from Steve Overpeck and it was 1-0. That lead would only last two minutes as Cherokee converted on the power play to tie the score at 1-1 as Newt Wallen was set-up by Zahaczewski and Gould.

Brandon Gould had two goals and two assists and Sean Zahacewski added a goal and three assists to lead Cherokee to a 6-0 win against Cherry Hill West in SJHSIHL JVB playoff action at the Coliseum on Monday night. Cherokee went on the power play almost immediately, and just twenty seconds into the game Gould scored on a feed from Zahacewski and that quickly it was 1-0. With West unable to generate much offense, Cherokee would score two goals in twenty-four seconds. Again it was Gould and Zahacewski doing the damage, first Gould set up Dan Redner to make it 2-0 and then Gould scored his second of the game from Zahacewski and Redner, and the period would end with Cherokee up 3-0.

For those of you who haven't seen the Camden boy's basketball team play this year, make time to do so. With the electrifying cross over dribble, ball handling, three point shooting, assist man DaJuan Wagner healthy, the Panthers are moving up the charts faster than Q-Tips Vibrant Thang. The Cherokee Chiefs were the victims of another team finding out how good the Panthers are this season. With the 58-45 win, Camden has improved their record to 12-4 and look to be unbeatable.

Cherokee defeated Cherry Hill East 5-2 and clinched first place in Tier 2 of the SJHSIHL, but the game was marred by a brawl which forced the officials to stop play with just under three minutes remaining. It's unfortunate that a game with this much importance was cut short due to poor judgement and at times poor officiating. East scored the only goal in the opening period as Mike Danyo deflected a shot by Desrochers. Cherokee tied the game at 1-1 when Paul Caruso scored on a pass from Kyle Kelly and Pat Birney.

On Thursday, Pennsauken defeated Cherokee 3-1 to continue the Indians' chase of the conference championship. Going into the third game, host Cherokee gave Pennsauken all they could handle, after bowling team games of 934-1000. Cherokee leadoff man Jon Hopely, who had bowled games of 231-248, started the third game with 11 consecutive strikes. On the twelve bowl, Jon pulled the last shot and left the 6-10 pin for a nice game of 298, and a series of 777. Helping Jon was Steve Travis with games of 187-224-221=632.

Collingswood and Cherokee played to 4-4 tie, thanks mainly for two saves on separate breakaways made by Collingswood goalie Wiedmann in the final minute. Pat Henderson opened the scoring for Cherokee converting a pass from Pat Birney and the 1-0 lead. Collingswood tied the score at 1-1 three minutes later as Joe Pavlow set up Cairns. Cherokee responded quickly as Frank Lord gave his team a 2-1 lead on a feed from Rich Gould. With less than two minutes left in the period, Collingswood converted on the power play as Smitley scored with Eric Sooy assisting and we were tied at 2-2.

Alex Vasserman scored with four minutes left in the game, as Cherry Hill West rallied to tie Cherokee at 2-2 in a penalty filled contest. Cherokee is the Tier 2 division leader, and was playing a West team that has struggled at times this year. But playing in front of their fans at the Coliseum, West played one of their best games of the season.

On a beautiful fall day here at Cherokee High School, the Tartans of Highland and the Chiefs of Cherokee battled on the gridiron. In the end, it was Highland gaining a 17-10 victory. The win moved the Tartans record to 4-3. With the loss, Cherokee fell to 3-4 and watched whatever playoff hopes they had go down the tubes.

Kyle Kelly scored three goals to lead Cherokee over West Deptford 6-4 in a SJHSIHL game played at Hollydell on Friday night. With the outstanding play of goaltender Phil Guinto, it looked like West Deptford might steal one as he denied Cherokee early on. The Chiefs came out and dominated the first six minutes, putting constant pressure on Guinto for most of the first half of the period that was spent in the West Deptford zone. Finally at the eight-minute mark, Bob Cook scored for the Eagles on the first shot of the game with Jay Bratton getting the assist.

These are dark days indeed for the Cherokee faithful. Not since the dark ages when the Rheumatic fever ran amuck, or the crash of Wall Street, or somebody grabbing that last burger off of the grill, have things looked so bleak for the Cherokee Chiefs. On the other hand, the newly ranked and well-deserved Eastern Vikings put on a dazzling display of football to showcase their success. Eastern dominated the Chiefs, here in Evesham, by notching their forth victory of the year with a powerful 49-7 victory.

The last two Fridays, I've covered Freshmen Football. These players and coaches put in a lot of time and don't get any coverage. This Friday, I traveled to Eastern to see their Freshmen play Cherokee. Cherokee won the game by the score of 31 - 14. The game was closer than the score suggests.

It was a hard fought game between two teams that are not used to losing. The 5-1 Cherokee girls were anxious to stop the 3-0 Cougars of Cherry Hill East. The first five minutes were all Cherry Hill as Cherokee's keeper Christie Schillig was tested early and often. This was not a game without offense. Cherry Hill outshot Cherokee 6-4 in the first half. Both teams had to fight their way out of the box over and over. The offenses simply ran into very capable defenses.

Can you smell what the Cherokee Chiefs and Triton Mustangs were cookin'? Here in Evesham, the Chiefs and Mustangs went tooth and nail at one another in a slugfest that would have made the late greats Jersey Joe Walcott and Rocky Marciano proud. On a beautiful autumn afternoon, this made for football day treated the fans at a packed Cherokee stadium to one of the most exciting games of this young season. Triton edged Cherokee by the close score of 34-28.
