Thursday, March 9, 2006 By Art Redd The coaches usually can tell at the start of a basketball season when the roster has been finalized on which players have made the team. Only in their second year in the league, LEAP Academy's coach Macro Marcos knew he had a very talented team that had a good chance of making it to the state finals. The Lancers will get their chance to prove their coach right as their 106-75 rout over Bordentown moved them into Group 1 state finals against Bloomfield Tech. Five players finished in double figures for the Lancers. |
Tuesday, March 7, 2006 By Vincent Lewis Even before the opening tip-off took place, this South Jersey Group I title game between the top seeded Lancers from LEAP Academy and the second seeded Blue Devils from Burlington City was a match-up and a test both teams were ready to take on. Burlington City features a guard oriented offense that anyone of them could take control of a game. The Lancers has the convenience of deep bench with players being inserted into the game without losing anything on the court. With the Lancers holding onto a one point lead heading into the final quarter, LEAP Academy would win the battle of the boards with their height and post a 90-83 victory and capture their first title in their brief school year’s history. |
Saturday, March 4, 2006 By Art Redd Everything is set, so clear your schedule for one of the most anticipated match-ups in our area. For the first time in their school's history, the Lancers from LEAP Academy advanced to the Group I finals with their 85-70 victory over Salem played at Woodrow Wilson High School. The finals will feature the number one seeded Lancers going up against the high flying Blue Devils from Burlington City who defeated Riverside to advance to the finals that will be held on Tuesday at 7 pm at Clearview. The Lancers would go on a 14-4 run over a two minute period during the second quarter that finally broke this game wide open. Lance James would lead the Lancers in scoring with 25 points. |
Monday, February 6, 2006 By Zachary Hibbs Fresh off of their victory against Camden, Woodrow Wilson would compete against another neighboring team in LEAP Academy. The Lancers were looking to get back to the winning side of a game after being defeated by St. Benedicts this past weekend. The two teams were competing in a non-league that started off with LEAP Academy holding onto a four point lead. Woodrow Wilson would find themselves quickly trailing before the half when the Lancers erupted for twenty-seven second quarter points. That proved to be the difference in this game as LEAP Academy would pick up their fifteenth win of the season when they defeat the Tigers 78-69. |
Saturday, January 21, 2006 By Zachary Hibbs It was another chance for the Lancers from LEAP Academy boys' basketball team to show off their skills. The second year program affiliated with Rutgers Camden University rarely gets the opportunity to compete against other high school programs from the South Jersey area. With only three losses in fourteen games played, LEAP would get their chance to see how well they would play against the Crusaders from Bishop Eustace. Quickly the Lancers made themselves right at home and pick up their twelfth win of the season. Four players would finish in double figures as the Lancers would cruise to their 98-64 victory. |
Saturday, January 7, 2006 By Jerome Michaels Seven days into the month of January, LEAP Academy boys' basketball team has been put to the test playing teams from North and South Jersey as well as teams from Philadelphia. The second year program has shown they have the talent to compete on the court and they would get another chance when they visited the undefeated Fighting Irish from Camden Catholic. The Lancers (9-2) would struggle on offense through the first half, but would pick up their scoring during the second half. Camden Catholic's team effort during the first half would be enough to pick up the 66-57 victory and increase their winning streak to eight games and no losses. |
Friday, December 30, 2005 By Jerome Michaels It has been a very busy week for those teams participating in the holiday tournaments that take place at the end of the year. For LEAP Academy, they had just completed a tournament in North Jersey and were right back on the court this time participating in the Jameer Nelson Classic held at Cherry Hill East High School. The Lancers would have to defeat a highly ranked St. Anthony boy's basketball team. Right away St. Anthony showed why they are so good with so many talented players on the court. LEAP Academy would have their seven game winning streak ended as St. Anthony would go on and post the 75-53 win. |
Thursday, December 29, 2005 By Zachary Hibbs There was an inaugural New Jersey Charter School Holiday Tournament held at Scared Heart that involved LEAP Academy University High Charter School from Camden. The Lancers from LEAP Academy advanced to the finals of this tournament against CREATE from Jersey City. Trailing by six points heading into the final quarter, Will Mace would contribute in the Lancers outscoring their opponent 25-8 to take control of this championship game. LEAP would go on to defeat CREATE 78-67 giving head coach Marco Marcos a well deserved victory. |
