South Jersey Baseball: Saturday, August 28, 2004 By Bill Cook The Trenton Thunder, Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, announced today that Outfielder Jason Grove has been named the 2004 Samuel Plumeri, Sr. Community Service Award Winner and the Hamilton Jewelers Fan Favorite Award Winner. He will be presented the awards in an on-field ceremony following the game vs. Binghamton on Saturday night at Mercer County Waterfront Park. Grove is the first player to receive both of the team's season ending awards. |

The tournament is offered to male and female players of all ages with the boys/men’s competition scheduled for September 25 and the girls/women’s bracket slated for September 26. South Jersey Baseball: Thursday, August 26, 2004 By Chuck Betson The Atlantic City Surf committed six errors as they fell 6-2 to the Camden Riversharks Thursday night at Sandcastle Stadium. Shortstop Henry Encarnacion committed three errors behind starter Rob Corrado. Corrado pitched six innings allowing six runs, all unearned, on five hits while striking out five. Shortstop Raul Marval drove in the only Surf runs with a two-run homerun, his thirteenth. |

South Jersey Baseball: Wednesday, August 25, 2004 By Chuck Betson The Atlantic City Surf defeated the Somerset Patriots 8-4 at Sandcastle Stadium on Wednesday night to move into first place. The Surf used five effective innings from starter Andy Zwirchitz. He allowed three runs and nine hits while striking out six to pick up the win. Gary Johnson, Dario Delgado, and Wil Quintana each went deep for the Surf. Johnson and Delgado drove in two runs apiece and David Housel collected three hits. |
South Jersey Baseball: Wednesday, August 25, 2004 By Don Delaney It took a future Hall of Famer to keep Jaime Steward from reaching every pitcher’s dream. Rickey Henderson broke up Jaime’s Steward bid for a no hitter with two outs in the top of eighth, but the Riversharks took over first place in the South Division with a 2-0 victory over the Newark Bears on Wednesday night at Campbell’s Field. Steward was masterful all evening long as he struck out ten and allowed just one hit in eight innings of work. Steward would have to fight each inning however as he allowed one bae runner in six of the eight innings he tossed. |
South Jersey Baseball: Tuesday, August 24, 2004 By Chuck Betson The Atlantic City Surf defeated the Somerset Patriots 5-3 on Tuesday night at Sandcastle Stadium. The Surf scored five unanswered runs in the third and fourth inning to take the lead for good. Anthony Chavez started and went eight innings for the Surf, allowing nine hits and three runs while striking out nine Patriots. Ned Darley earned the save with a scoreless ninth. Raul Marval led the Surf bats with two hits and three RBI. Third baseman Dario Delgado also had two hits and drove in a run. |
South Jersey Baseball: Tuesday, August 24, 2004 By Don Delaney The Camden Riversharks pulled within a half game of the Newark Bears in the South Division with a 14-5 win over the Bears on Tuesday night at Campbell’s Field. The Riversharks were able to fight back from a pair of early deficits as they scored eight runs in the fifth inning to pull away with the victory. The Riversharks sent 14 batters to the plate in the fifth as eight different Riversharks crossed home plate. |

South Jersey Baseball: Monday, August 23, 2004 By Don Delaney The Riversharks keep getting the breaks they need to keep pace in the second half South Division race. Camden picked up a game on the Newark Bears with a 5-3 win over the Bears in the opener of a three-game series at Campbell’s Field on Monday night. The difference in the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Dwight Maness hit would looked to be an inning ending fly ball to right field after Newark starter Brent Billingsley walked the bases loaded. Bears right fielder Keith Maxwell had the ball fall out of his glove and allowed the Riversharks to score three runs on the error, which gave Camden a 4-2 advantage. |
South Jersey Baseball: Monday, August 23, 2004 By Bill Cook Mitch Jones of the Trenton Thunder, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, moved into a tie for the Eastern League home run lead with his 37th home run of the season on Sunday in Portland. He is now four home runs away from the Eastern League record with fifteen games to play; six of which are at home this week. The Eastern League home run mark of 41 was set by Ken Strong of Hazelton in 1930 and tied by Rick Lancellotti of Buffalo in 1979. |
South Jersey Baseball: Monday, August 23, 2004 By Chuck Betson The Atlantic City Surf lost to the Somerset Patriots Monday twice, 14-10 and 4-2 as they were swept at Sandcastle Stadium. Third baseman Jeff Nettles hit a three-run homerun in the top of the seventh for Somerset in the second game for the sweep. In the first game Kyle Goldwater lost for the first time in fourteen starts going five and a third allowing ten runs on twelve hits. Jason Shelley did not make it to the second inning for Somerset after surrendering five runs on three hits. |
