South Jersey Baseball: Sunday, September 26, 2004 By Don Delaney The Long Island Ducks became the 2004 Atlantic League Champions on Sunday evening at Campbell's Field as they knocked off the Camden Riversharks, 4-3, to complete the three-game sweep of the best of five series. It was the third straight game to be decided by one run as the Ducks won the opener 11-10 and 5-4 last night, both games were played at Citibank Park. It was two key errors that accounted for the four Duck runs. Long Island scored a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning and two more runs in the seventh inning to account for their scoring. |
High School Football: Saturday, September 25, 2004 By Jerome Michaels Bouncing back from a tough loss in their season opener, Gloucester was the favorite in their home game against Pennsville. But being the favorite could add some pressure to a team that it takes a while for them to relax. It only took one and a half minutes into this game that the Lions showed how relaxed they were on the field. Senior runningback David Saunders scored the first of three first quarter touchdowns. The offensive line was not done opening wholes for anyone to run through. By the end of the game, Gloucester cruised to a 41-14 win to pick up their first victory of the season. |
High School Football: Saturday, September 25, 2004 By Vincent Lewis The South Jersey area is well aware of how good it feels that our Philadelphia Eagles have gotten off to a very good start by winning their first 2 games of the season. The team has built a winning atmosphere that surrounds them and provides an attitude that this team knows now how to play together. In a similar situation, the Eagles from Paul VI and Bishop Eustace find themselves in a position to prove who the better undefeated team is after both find themselves ahead of the pack after two weeks. A victory by either team keeps them on top of their division. A late touchdown by Paul VI made this game interesting, but it was Brandon Canter’s 30-yard field that proved to be the difference in the Crusaders 10-7 victory at home. |
Tennis Spotlight: Saturday, September 25, 2004 By Bob Heller Coming off of one of their stronger performances of the year, the USP women's tennis team looked flat against a much improved Cabrini College squad, falling to the Cavaliers 6-1. USP's lone win came at #1 singles as Amanda Bedway (Fr., Blue Mountain HS/Orwigsburg, PA) rallied from a one-set deficit to defeat Jenn Keller 6-7 (7-5), 6-1, 6-1. The win improved her singles record to 4-1 on the season. |
High School Football: Friday, September 24, 2004 By Jerome Michaels Depending on which side of the field you are standing on, trailing in a game is never in the game plan. The goal is to jump ahead of your opponent and get the momentum going on your sideline. Both of these teams have experienced that situation this season. Paulsboro has gotten off to a good start picking up two victories and no losses. Tonight, the Red Raiders were celebrating their early seven point advantage. That's when the host Sterling Knights quickly switched the momentum to their sidelines when Art Ellis' 93 yard kickoff return was the start of their 20-7 come from behind victory. |
High School Soccer: Friday, September 24, 2004 By Crystal Parker The girl's soccer team from West Deptford went out on the field at Sterling High School and dominated the play both offensively and defensively. Head coach John Cobb was very actively instructing his team on their way to a 5-0 victory. Scoring chances were plentiful for the Lady Eagles as the early lead led to a team relaxed and playing smart for the rest of the game. Jenna Lindsay scored twice for the Eagles and Colleen Hee who played all but the final minutes of the game preserved the shutout. |
High School Field Hockey: Friday, September 24, 2004 By Susan Hall The Lady Crusaders from Bishop Eustace were hosting an Olympic Conference National Division match-up against their neighboring rivals Camden Catholic. These two teams met in last year’s South Jersey Group 2 semifinals with the Lady Irish advancing to the finals with their 1-0 win. Today, the two squared off with Camden Catholic taking the early one goal advantage. The Crusaders would score three unanswered goals to pick up not only the 3-1 victory, but an all important division win. |
High School Football: Thursday, September 23, 2004 By Jerome Michaels So far this season, football teams have found out a bit more about themselves. Just like any organized sport, it takes practice and game time experience to really find out how well a team plays on the field. It may take a game or two, but when the entire team plays on the same page of the playbook, everything works out with the results on the scoreboard. Timber Creek's Terrance Gass had all the right wholes to run through rushing for three touchdowns leading the way for the Chargers to pick up the road victory at Burlington Township. With their 41-22 win, Timber Creek would pick up their first win of the season. |
High School Football: Thursday, September 23, 2004 By Vincent Lewis There are those who believe that the most exciting play of a football game is a kickoff return for a touchdown. Others might have a different option and mention any offensive touchdown would rank at the top of their list. Willingboro's Taurean Johnson provided some excitement of his own when the linebacker recovered a fumble and rumbled down the left side for the apparent defensive score. His efforts came up 5 yards short, but the effort by the Chimeras defense highlighted this Burlington/Olympic Liberty Division football game against the Cougars from Cherry Hill West. Willingboro limited West's scoring chances and giving their offense ample time to post a 47-15 victory. |
South Jersey Baseball: Thursday, September 23, 2004 By Bob Nehring Nine runs and 14 hits carried the Camden Riversharks into the Atlantic League Championship Series on Wednesday night as they continued their season with a 9-4 win over the Atlantic City Surf at Sandcastle Stadium. The Riversharks clinched the best of three series with a two game sweep after winning the opener 8-2 on Tuesday at Campbell's Field. Once again the Riversharks scored earlier, received solid pitching through the contest and then pulled away late in the game. |
Tennis Spotlight: Thursday, September 23, 2004 By Bob Heller The USP women's tennis team evened their record at 2-2 with their first ever win against Division II area rival West Chester University this afternoon, defeating the Golden Rams 5-4. Starting the match with the doubles competition, USP dropped two of the three matches to trail 2-1 heading into singles competition. The Devils #1 doubles team of Amanda Bedway (Fr., Blue Mountain HS/Orwigsburg, PA) and Michelle Inzillo (Jr, Atlantic City HS/Margate, NJ) turned in the only doubles win on the afternoon for the Devils, an 8-6 pro-set victory over Amanda Zern and Sheila Sheridan. |
High School Soccer: Wednesday, September 22, 2004 By Susan Hall Finally with some nice weather in our area, there aren't any excuses for teams to execute their game plan. Field conditions are no longer in the way and players were able to find stable footing to put the ball in play. Standing in the way of the girl's soccer game between the Eagles from Paul VI and the Triton Mustangs was the stingy defense by both teams. It wasn't until three minutes remaining in this Olympic Conference competition that the lone goal was scored. Laureen Riiff provided the only goal the Lady Eagles needed to win this game. |
South Jersey Baseball: Wednesday, September 22, 2004 By Chuck Betson The Atlantic City Surf fell to the Camden Riversharks Wednesday night 9-4, in front of 3,205 at Sandcastle Stadium. The win gives the Riversharks the sweep of the best-of-three series and they will play the winner of the Nashua vs. Long Island series. Camden struck first with three runs in the second inning with three consecutive RBI singles by Tony Rodriguez, Quincy Foster, and Brad Strauss. Rodriguez had four hits and drove in three runs, including a solo homer in the five run sixth. Tom Hage had three hits for the Riversharks and drove in two. Starter Ben Simon earned the win with seven strong innings. He allowed two runs on four hits and struck out four. |

High School Soccer: Tuesday, September 21, 2004 By Jerome Michaels Looking at the schedule before the regular season began, the Rancocas Valley versus Moorestown match-up was an anticipated competition waiting to happen. The Burlington County Liberty Division defending champions Red Devils from Rancocas Valley were looking to repeat again, as long as they could prove they could get by their division rivals Quakers from Moorestown. Both teams have their "go to" players, but in this game, there are other players who come up big providing a way to win. Michael Koneschusky and Luke Calvano both score giving Moorestown the 2-0 victory. |
South Jersey Baseball: Monday, September 20, 2004 By Don Delaney Lincoln Mikkelsen remains the only player in Camden Riversharks history to win a playoff game as he pitched eight innings of four hit baseball to lead the Riversharks over the Atlantic City Surf, 8-2, in the first round of the Atlantic League Southern Division playoffs on Tuesday night at Campbell’s Field. The Atlantic League Pitcher of the Year candidate struck out two and allowed just one run to improve to 1-0 in the playoffs. |
