High School Soccer: Sunday, October 24, 2004 By Boog Williams In the first game of the Coaches Tournament semi-finals, #2 Cinnaminson defeated #10 Ocean City 3-2 on penalty kicks. After the first half ended 0-0, in which Ocean City had the better play of the game, the second half also ended 0-0. Cinnaminson had the better play of the game in the half, as the game went into overtime. In the first overtime, Ocean City's keeper, Abbey Hansen, made a great save but could not control the ball as it bounced to Cinnaminson's Meaghan Reilly. Reilly and Hansen collided, with the ball going behind Hansen, but was cleared by Sweeper Katie Ruiz. Ruiz was one reason why the score was 0-0. She played a great game at sweeper. |
High School Football: Saturday, October 23, 2004 By Clark Washington This late in the season, it was special for two undefeated teams from the same division to meet on the playing field to take a big step towards first place. There was another reason this was a special game between Florence and Burlington City. Both of these teams had a winning streak they were trying to extend. Florence was the team that unknowingly decided this low scoring, defensive battle in the first quarter. The Flashes posted a 10-0 lead and held onto it for the remainder of the game. |
High School Football: Saturday, October 23, 2004 By Jason Brown It's an argument that could go on for days about which sport would be considered the toughest sport to participate in. The game of football can take its toll on players testing their ability to continue to play through four quarters at the highest level and sometimes with pain. Under those same conditions previously mentioned, when your starting quarterback and runningback are missing from the lineup, it serves as a motivation factor for both teams on the field. Willingboro was that team missing two key players that Camden took full advantage off. Scoring twice in the second half was enough for the Panthers to upset Willingboro by a 12-2 score. |
High School Football: Saturday, October 23, 2004 By Jason Brown Power rankings, final standings, big wins...oh my!?! It's that time again when teams are looking for the much needed victories to either move themselves higher up in the rankings or just trying to make the rankings. Paulsboro was hosting a Woodbury team that was looking to establish a new identity after losing keys players due to graduation. It was a game that Paulsboro felt confident about and they demonstrated that on the field. Running back DeAndre Fowlkes had plenty of room to run and then used his strength to push away the Thundering Herd to capture the 28-6 victory in a Colonial Conference Patriot Division match up. |
High School Football: Saturday, October 23, 2004 By Vincent Lewis Anthony Glaud had everything under control running the offense for the Eagles football team from Winslow Township. In this game held at Woodrow Wilson, the real fan paying attention got to enjoy the action without the announcer giving updates or the scoreboard showing the position and down indicator on the field. The cadence and play calling at the line could be heard and Glaud was in the middle of it all and in full control of the offense. Leading by a touchdown at the break, Winslow Township's defense held off the Panthers in the second half and rolled to a 21-13 victory in a Burlington/Olympic Conference inter-league competition. |
Ice Hockey Spotlight: Saturday, October 23, 2004 By Al Cohen Philadelphia native Tony Voce scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner 1:09 into overtime, as the Phantoms continued their recent success against the Hershey Bears with a 3-2 victory tonight at the GIANT Center. A day after scoring his first career goal in Philadelphia's 5-3 win over Hamilton, Voce evened the score at 1-1 early in the third period and recorded his first game-winning goal in the extra session. The rookie from Boston College University gained possession at center ice on the decisive play before dropping it back to a trailing Joni Pitkanen. The defenseman gave it right back to Voce, who beat Hershey goaltender Tom Lawson from a difficult angle to lift the Phantoms to their second straight win. |

Track Spotlight: Saturday, October 23, 2004 By Bob Heller USP got personal best times from their top four runners as the women's cross country team recorded a third place finish, their best ever at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championships at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Devils finished with 82 points, just three points behind runner up Nyack College (79) and 39 behind CACC champion Georgian Court University (39). |
High School Football: Friday, October 22, 2004 By Jerome Michaels Getting that first win of the season is always important to a team especially when that team has the lead late in the fourth quarter. Giving a team their first win of the season can also rally a team to find a way to win a game. After all was said and done, this game turned out to be an exciting football game held at Lenape High School. Rancocas Valley was able to hold off the Indians for three quarters leading by a touchdown. Lenape would take advantage of a late turnover and capitalized on their good field position to avoid overtime and defeat the Red Devils by a 19-12 margin. |
High School Soccer: Friday, October 22, 2004 By Susan Hall For those teams that have qualified for the playoffs by finishing with a record above five hundred before the cutoff date, it's now time to refocus on improving on the areas that needs some work. The seeding for the soccer postseason brackets will be out soon and teams can begin the preparation against their opponent. Both Schalick and Highland's girls soccer teams were coming off of wins and had earn a shutout in that victory. In this Tri-County Conference interdivision game, the Lady Tartans would watch their opponents score twice in the second half to earn the tie. |
Ice Hockey Spotlight: Friday, October 22, 2004 By Al Cohen Patrick Sharp and Philadelphia native Tony Voce each scored third-period power-play goals to lift the Phantoms to a 5-3 victory over the Hamilton Bulldogs tonight in front of 10,152 fans at the Wachovia Center. Eric Meloche, Riley Cote and Peter White also scored for Philadelphia, which posted its first win of the season after dropping a pair of games on the road last weekend. Goaltender Antero Niittymaki earned the win by stopping 19-of-22 shots. Tomas Plekanec tallied two power-play goals and Dan Ellis finished with 45 saves for Hamilton, which has lost three straight meetings against the Phantoms. |
High School Soccer: Friday, October 22, 2004 By Stephanie Wright Each year the coaching staff is looking for ways to improve their team's success. Our Lady of Mercy had qualified for this year's post season's playoff and was looking for more. After a one goal victory over Buena two days ago, the Villagers' Meghan Zapeic did not allow a single goal enter the net against St. Joseph. All of the scoring happened in the second half with Maria Grady and Caitlin Hess each scoring twice to lead Our Lady of Mercy to a 4-0 victory. |
High School Ice Hockey: Friday, October 22, 2004 By Mike Costantino Chris Keyser scored four goals as Washington Township pounded St. John Neumann 10-3 on Friday night at Hollydell. Township jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period and was simply too fast and too deep for Neumann. Marco Jordan set-up Kaiser in the opening moments to put Township up 1-0, then eleven seconds later after Kaiser was stopped on a breakaway. Sean Rainey put home the rebound to make it 2-0. Billy Choy found Dave Moore in the slot to increase the lead to 3-0, and Kaiser closed out the opening period with a late goal on a feed from T.J. Dispaldo. |
High School Ice Hockey: Friday, October 22, 2004 By Mike Costantino Shaun Stamm scored three goals and Mike Sullivan added two goals as Clearview defeated Cherry Hill West 7-1 in high school ice hockey action played at Hollydell. Leading just by 2-1 heading into the third period, Clearview erupted for five goals to pull away from an under-manned Cherry Hill West team. Cybulski scored the only goal for West on the power play early in the second period. |
High School Volleyball: Thursday, October 21, 2004 By Crystal Parker For the first time in quite a while that the two opposing teams really didn't know what to expect before the opening whistle was blown to indicate the start of the girls volleyball match. Both the Lady Villagers from Our Lady of Mercy and Moorestown Quakers have been successful winning their games relatively easy. It didn't take long for the host to establish who the better team was on this day. Moorestown controlled and won the first game 25-19, but the second game was determined by Devon Johnston serving seven straight points to break a thirteen all deadlock. |
Tennis Spotlight: Thursday, October 21, 2004 By Bob Heller The LaSalle University Men's Tennis team captured two of the three doubles matches, earning the doubles points, and three singles matches to squeeze past the University of the Sciences yesterday, 4-3. |
Ice Hockey Spotlight: Thursday, October 21, 2004 By Al Cohen The Philadelphia Phantoms today bolstered their lineup by signing left wing Todd Fedoruk to an AHL contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. To make room for Fedoruk on the roster, center B.J. Abel was loaned to the Trenton Titans of the ECHL. Fedoruk, 25, began his professional career with the Phantoms during the 1999-2000 season and has appeared in 42 games with the team over parts of four seasons, recording seven points (1G, 6A) and 145 penalty minutes. His most recent time spent with the Phantoms came last season when he compiled a pair of assists during a two-game conditioning assignment by the Flyers in late November. |
High School Ice Hockey: Wednesday, October 20, 2004 By Mike Costantino There are some old clichés such as “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, or “Be careful what you wish for”, or my personal favorite “On any given Sunday”, but as I contemplated the change the SJHSIHL league made this year in eliminating the Tier system, I could only think of, “You gotten to be #!!!?& me Pyle!!” Why the league, in my opinion would take three steps backward, is inconceivable, how many competitive games will there be this season? Well, I am glad you asked. For those who are not familiar to what has happened, let me update you. No longer are the teams separated by Tier 1 and Tier 2, everyone is equal. Is the talent level the same? No, that’s why they have Tier 1 and Tier 2, I mean had. |
High School Soccer: Wednesday, October 20, 2004 By Stephanie Wright Each game is sometimes considered a test to see how well a team performs under certain circumstances. When Our Lady of Mercy traveled to Buena to compete in a girl's soccer game, it would be against a team that has proven to themselves that they know how to win. The National Division I leaders had lived up to their success as they played a very exciting game against the Villagers. With the game tied at two goals apiece late in the second half, freshman Marybeth Scharle scored the winning game with a minute and twenty seconds remaining in the game. That goal gave the National Division II leaders the 3-2 victory. |
Volleyball Spotlight: Wednesday, October 20, 2004 By Bob Heller The Goldey Beacom women's volleyball team snapped a four game losing streak and knocked off the second place Devils of USP 3-0 at Goldey Beacom's MBNA Hall last night. The Lightning won game one 30-28, game two 30-18 and game three 30-23. |
High School Soccer: Monday, October 18, 2004 By Stephanie Wright When Egg Harbor Township visited Our Lady of Mercy Academy last week, the shot attempts came easy for the Lady Villagers but not the goals. A total of thirty shots were taken but only one made it into the net. The same pattern continued when this time, Wildwood Catholic was the opponent and the only goal needed was again scored by Jen Woldrow. When you get that much production from the second leading scorer on the team, nothing but good rewards or wins can happen. Our Lady's Meghan Zapeic recorded her seventh shutout of the season in route to their 4-0 victory. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, October 18, 2004 By Mike Costantino Mike Varano had three goals and Andrew Trapani, Matt Zelasky and Mike Salvatore added two goals each as Highland defeated Triton 10-3 in high school ice hockey action in Voorhees. High School Ice Hockey: Monday, October 18, 2004 By Mike Costantino Zachary Booth scored with fifteen seconds left in the game as Paul VI rallied to tie Shawnee 1-1, in SJHSIHL action played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. With goalie Eric Lake pulled for an extra skater, Booth raced down the left side and his quick shot deflected off Shawnee goalie Cippolone and into the net. Cippolone had kept Paul VI off the scoreboard making several outstanding saves, including stops on Brett Doyle and Brett Balco both on deflections. |
College Soccer: Monday, October 18, 2004 By Mike Ballard Senior forward Mike Hannings played a huge role in keeping the Rutgers-Camden men's soccer team undefeated in a pair of key New Jersey Athletic Conference games last week. Hannings scored a goal in each game against William Paterson (Oct. 13) and Kean (Oct. 16), and both of them proved to be the winning goal.
