Eastern Get Back on Winning Track

Friday, May 6, 2005

By Jerome Michaels
SJSports Special Correspondent

It’s never easy to go a complete season without losing a single game, but when that rare occasion does occur that team should be highly rewarded with recognition of a job well done. Eastern’s baseball team had the staff and the players with the potential of going undefeated but loss their first game of the season to Cherokee two days ago. That loss was not a good sign for Bishop Eustace as Eastern would get that winning feeling flowing through the entire team. Pat Monaghan started the game on the mound for the Vikings and knocked in two runs with a triple to help Eastern pull away from their opponent. Eastern posted a 9-2 decision in an inter-Olympic Conference game.

Friday, May 6, 2005

By Joyce Sagerty

This was a chance for Ocean City to prove that they could compete with a team with a winning record from another conference. The Red Raiders would play their host Minutemaids from Washington Township evenly for the first twenty-five minutes and were looking to maintain that intensity. The start of the second half was a different story as Mandy Silvesti scored three straight goals to put the Minutemaids one step ahead for the rest of this game. Silvesti would finish with five goals for Washington Township as they defeat Ocean City by a 13-9 margin.

McDevitt Hammers Home Homer for Garnets

Thursday, May 5, 2005

By Susan Hall
SJSports Special Correspondent

This was that time of the year were teams were focusing a bit more on making every play in the field or concentrating harder on connecting the bat with the ball. In a non-league game played at Haddon Heights, Pitman was that visiting team looking to keep their playoff hopes alive. Starting pitcher Erin Murphy was on the mound for the Lady Garnets trying to extend the teams winning streak to two games. Caitlin McDevitt would be one of the reasons Haddon Heights defeat Pitman by a 4-0 score. McDevitt had two hits and two runs batted in with one of them scored on a solo home run.

Paul VI Hands Camden Catholic another Loss

Wednesday, May 4, 2005

By Joyce Sagerty
SJSports Special Correspondent

The news spread quickly about Camden Catholic losing their first game of the season. For Paul VI, it was good news as they were chasing the Irish in the standings and picking up a division win moves them one step closer to the top. The Lady Eagles would start off this game with an early lead only to see it disappear in the third inning. Paul VI continued to come through with the big hits especially from the bat of Megan Bryson who had two triples and a double in the game. A three run sixth inning by the Eagles broke open a tied ball game giving Stephanie Ricciardi the run support she needed. With the 7-3 decision over Camden Catholic, Paul VI got back on the winning side of a game by defeating the Olympic Conference National Division leaders.

Overbrook's Defense Help Secure Procida's No Hitter

Wednesday, May 4, 2005

By Susan Hall
SJSports Special Correspondent

So far this season, Overbrook has been doing everything they need to do in order to stay ahead of the rest of the teams from the Tri-County Conference Royal Division. Their success on the softball field has rewarded the Lady Rams with winning eight straight games which included a win on Monday over the determined Pioneers from Clearview. Competing in their four straight divisional game, the Rams’ Kerri Procida would watch the defense come up with some spectacular plays both in the infield and outfield not only keeping Highland off the scoreboard, but also preserving a no hitter. Overbrook would extend their winning streak with their 5-0 victory at home.

Moir's One Hitter Enough for Lenape

Tuesday, May 3, 2005

By Susan Hall
SJSports Special Correspondent

When two good softball teams meet on the field knowing that the opposing pitchers have the capability of striking out everyone that stands up at the plate, each player must take advantage of every situation that’s presented in order to score runs. The starting pitchers, Jamie Moir for Lenape and Alyssa O’Connell for Camden Catholic, are considered two of the best pitchers in South Jersey. Only one hit was surrendered in this Olympic Conference game which meant that someone pitched a no hitter. O’Connell would not give up a single hit, but did not win the game for Camden Catholic. Lenape would score the only run of the game on a fielder’s choice during the first inning. Moir would take over for the rest of the game striking out fifteen batters to pick up the 1-0 decision.
