Moorestown Quakers Middle School "A" Ice Hockey Team wins Championship

The Moorestown Middle School "A" Ice Hockey Team won the fall/winter league Championship Monday night (3/27/06) at the Spectrum in spectacular form. The team was firing on all eight cylinders as they beat Cherry Hill East with a score of 5 to 0. They beat Cinnaminson 9-4 the night before to advance to the title game. Head Coach, Howard Griffis along with his Assistant Coaches, Ron Schwinn III and Jim Rushmore did an outstanding job coaching this team to a championship season always keeping the team focused on the ice.

Penguins Freeze Phantoms Streak

On Sunday night at the Wachovia Spectrum, the Philadelphia Phantoms formidable winning streak was halted at five games with a 2-1 loss to the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins. The loss put the Phantoms at the brink of playoff elimination. Philadelphia drew first blood for the seventh consecutive game, as with 3:20 remaining in the first period the home team made the Pens pay for a turnover. Tony Voce pickpocketed the puck behind the net and fed it into the slot for Jim Campbell. He in turn rifled a one-timer perfectly into the upper right corner, over the glove of goaltender Andy Chiodo, for the 1-0 lead. The assist extended Voce's season-high point-scoring streak to 10 games. The Philadelphia-born winger has six goals and 10 assists during the run:

Audubon Holds on to Defeat Sterling

The Green Wave from Audubon got their season off on the right track when they hosted the Silver Knights from Sterling. Through seven innings, the Wave would pick up the 7-6 victory by rallying for three runs during the bottom of the sixth inning. This Colonial Conference game would be won by Tim Bolburian for Audubon. The next game up for the Wave would be another home game against the Gateway Gators. Sterling would look to pick up their first win of the season when they travel to Haddon Heights.

Camden Catholic's Falcone Highlights Victory over Lions

A few weeks ago you could find players outdoor taking part of practices in anticipation of making the team. One of those sports would be the growing popularity of lacrosse. With more and more high schools establishing lacrosse teams in South Jersey, it can only benefit from the attention it’s getting. For Camden Catholic and Cherry Hill West who were starting off the season participating in an inter conference girls’ lacrosse team, it would be a chance for these two established squads to begin their season with victory. Midfielder Jessica Falcone would start the season off right by scoring five goals for Camden Catholic and the Lady Irish would pick up the 18-8 win at home against Cherry Hill West.

There's just over a month away before teams start worrying about the May 15th deadline to qualifying for the state tournament. With the start of a new season, it's always nice to pick up that first victory of the season especially on the first day. It puts a team one step closer in achieving that goal of extending the regular season. With new students making the team, this season will be interesting to watch. Participating in just their second season, the Golden Eagles from Seneca continue to impress in their game against Camden Catholic. The Golden Eagles would pick up the road victory with their 12-5 decision over the Fighting Irish.

Phantoms Overpower Bears

Six different players scored on Saturday night in Hershey in a 6-2 victory for the Phantoms over the Hershey Bears. It was the fifth straight win for Philadelphia, equaling a season-high for consecutive victories. For the sixth game in a row, the Phantoms scored the first goal. At 13:46 of the first period, Jim Campbell carried a puck down the right side and swept behind the net before throwing the disc out in front. It hit a Hershey player and bounced in for the 1-0 Philadelphia lead.

Philadelphia earned an important division win with an 8-7 victory against Rochester Saturday at the Wachovia Center in front of 12,001 fans. The two teams split their previous two matchups this season and played a more defensive style this time around. Sean Greenhalgh led the Wings with two goals and two assists, while John Grant scored a hat trick for the Knighthawks.

Brent Kelly scored two goals, added an assist and was +4 on Friday night, leading the Phantoms to a 4-2 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the Wachovia Spectrum. Ben Eager started out the scoring at the 6:46 mark at the end of an excellent batch of puck movement by the Phantoms. The puck came down from Kelly on the point to Pat Kavanagh in the left corner, who found Eager in front. Wade Dubielewicz stopped the initial shot, but Eager was able to sweep the rebound home on the backhand for the 1-0 lead.

KiXX' Playoff Hopes Alive with 4-3 Win in St. Louis

The Philadelphia KiXX (8-19) defeated former player/coach Omid Namazi and the St. Louis Steamers (21-6), 4-3, in the club's annual school-day matinee at the Savvis Center. The victory, the first of the season versus St. Louis, pulled the KiXX within two and one-half games of the fourth-placed Chicago Storm in the race for the final position in the 2006 Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Championship Series. Rookie defender Josh Rife recorded the game-winning goal on a pass from teammate and Philadelphia newcomer Dino Delevski at 13:36 of the fourth quarter. Peter Pappas (8-17) earned the victory in net for Philadelphia with 12 saves on 15 chances, while Bayard Elfvin (3-2) took the loss for the Steamers with eight saves.

USS Houle Torpedos Admirals

Goaltender Martin Houle recorded the second shutout of his young career with a season- and career-high 39 saves as the Phantoms cruised to a 5-0 win over the Norfolk Admirals at the Wachovia Spectrum on Wednesday night. Houle weathered a 23 shot attack in the second period alone. The Phantoms opened the scoring with 9:23 left in the first period. Pat Kavanagh sailed down the left side and let loose a wrister that Corey Crawford stopped. The rebound fell directly in front of the right post, where Alexandre Picard stood. He poked it back on net, and it ended up being swept home by Kavanagh at the opposite pipe for the 1-0 lead. It was Kavanagh's first goal in 10 games and Jones' first point with the Phantoms since October 30.

Raptor of the Week: Mandi Moore

In the only doubleheader of the week for the Rutgers-Camden softball team, freshman Mandi Moore led an offensive assault during a 14-0, 18-0 sweep over Keystone College March 25. Moore, who played both left field and shortstop in the twinbill, went 2-for-3 with one run and one double in each game. She had three RBIs in the opening game and five RBIs in the nightcap, including the first three of the game on a first-inning home run, the first round-tripper of her college career. She finished with eight RBIs on the day, and added a walk for good measure.
