Saturday, November 4, 2006

By Jerome Michaels
SJSports Special Correspondent

Pennsauken has had its share of good and bad times during this season that begun with high hopes and a chance at a group title. Six games into their season, the Indians found themselves in a football game that they had to win in order to qualify for the playoffs. The Chiefs from Cherokee had only one loss on the season and they were on their way to another win leading at the break by a touchdown. A second half comeback lead by led by Wendell Johnson's two rushing touchdowns gave Pennsauken a lead late in the game. The Chiefs had the ball late in the game with a chance to tie it but an interception by the defense would be able to preserve the win. The Indians' 22-14 win over Cherokee has secured them a position in the upcoming South Jersey Group IV playoffs.

Friday, November 3, 2006

By Stephanie Wright

It was a match up between the second and third seed of the Central Jersey Group I field hockey tournament and there was no doubt that it would be a very close game. On the field, the Lady Crusaders from Bishop Eustace started out this game strong on both ends of the field pressuring Gloucester's defense during the opening moments. With every attempt in getting the game's first goal coming up short, Bishop Eustace just would give up. The Crusaders would score a goal in each half and reward themselves with a 2-0 win and advance to the finals against New Egypt.

Washington Township and Clearview skated to a 4-4 tie in Tier 1 action played at Hollydell on Friday night. In years past this has been a huge rivalry game but in the last few seasons the intensity seem to be missing, but not tonight as Clearview came in as a heavy underdog, still looking for their first win and Township on top of the standings and undefeated. There seemed to be more Clearview fans in attendance and they made their presence known. The teams traded goals in the first period, with Christian Fleagle scoring a power play goal for Township and Ken Rodgers scoring for Clearview late in the period.

It's an honor that teams should take full advantage of their accomplishments during the regular season. Representing the South Jersey Group II girls' soccer tournament were top seeded Green Wave from Audubon. With their number one label, Audubon would have the luxury of hosting every game as long as they keep winning. Today, Jordan Wright would help Audubon keep their quest to the finals alive. Her two first half goals scored against ninth seeded Point Pleasant Boro built a lead that they were able to maintain for both halves of this quarterfinals game. Audubon would advance by shutting out Point Pleasant by a 3-0 margin. The Green Wave will now host the fourth seeded Garnets from Haddon Heights.

This semi-finals girls' Central Jersey Group IV playoff game gave the Chiefs more than enough reasons to prove that they were a lot better than their regular season record had indicated. The eighth seeded Chiefs surprised Cherry Hill West by taking a three goal lead at halftime leaving the fifth seeded Lions in search of a second half comeback. Cherokee would continue to stay ahead in this game and advance to the sectional finals with their 4-1 victory. Wednesday, November 1, 2006

By Susan Hall

When a team has won so many group titles, an opposing team can be a bit intimidated with all of their recent success. Pemberton's field hockey program has turned itself back into a winning tradition and they would get a chance to see how far their accomplishments would take them. Traveling to Moorestown and competing in a Central Jersey Group II tournament, the Lady Quakers took a small advantage at the break and used the second half to continue to stay ahead of Pemberton. Cornelia Duffin would score three of the four goals scored in this game and help Moorestown advance to the finals with their 4-0 victory. Sterling Starts Group Playoffs Strong

Tuesday, October 31, 2006

By George Brookings

It was a match up that gave all of the indications that a very close and competitive game was about to begin. The first round of the South Jersey Group II boys' soccer tournament began at Sterling High School with the ninth seeded Cougars from Schalick taking on the Silver Knights who were the eighth seed. Both of these teams had the players that could single-handedly take control of a game, but it would be a team effort that would decide the outcome. Schalick appeared to have the emotional edge during the first half that Sterling was able to withstand especially when a goal by Mike Delp scored the eventual game winner. With the 1-0 victory, the Knights move on to the next round and compete against the top seeded Pirates from Cinnaminson.

Tuesday, October 31, 2006

By Jerome Michaels

You've heard it before, but it never gets old. The playoff is a new season where every team starts out with no wins and no losses. The eleventh seeded Gators from Gateway knew they had to play well in order to come away with a win at Delran. Joe Kane put a damper on Gateway's hopes as he scored a minute and fifty seconds into this game. The Gators would battle back but the sixth seeded Bears continued to stay one step ahead of their opponent by keeping the pressure on the defense. Delran would jump ahead during the second half for good and with this game by a 4-2 margin.

With the seedings for the upcoming state tournament already established, Camden Catholic's success during the regular season has rewarded them with a bye during the first round of the South Jersey Group II field hockey tournament. The start of this year's quest for the title begins tomorrow but the Irish still had a regular season divisional game to play against Paul IV. This was an opportunity for both teams to finish off the season with a good showing on the field. Monday, October 30, 2006

By Susan Hall

It was the second time this season that these two teams competed against one another but this time it was a bit difference. This was the opening round of the South Jersey Group IV girls' soccer tournament and the ninth seeded Thunderbolts were trying to upset the eight seeded Lady Lions from Cherry Hill West. The winner would advance to the next round against the top seeded Vikings from Eastern. Millville would adjust nicely from their defeat to Cherry Hill West earlier in the season, but the Lions still had an answer and that was defense. Arielle Caldas goal was the only goal needed as Cherry Hill West advanced to the next round with their 2-0 victory.
