Monday, October 11, 1999

By Andrea Johnson

The Edgewood girls tennis team experienced many ups and downs this week. We started out strong on Saturday at Deptford, turning in a 5-0 match. On Tuesday, the team headed to Overbrook for the Olympic Conference Tournament. With all three singles players and both doubles teams involved, Edgewood's presence could not be ignored. Alexis Switenko won her first round match in two sets, as did Erin Riley.

Thursday, September 30, 1999

By Bob Stewart

On Thursday, at Edgewood High School, the Lady Eagles of Edgewood challenged the Ladies of Palmyra in a non-conference match. This match may not be one that the news reporters rush to cover, but it was significant to us. It was the battle of the Mack Family. Edgewood's Jeff Mack was challenging his older brother, John. As an added incentive, his niece, #1 singles Lauren Mack, also plays for Palmyra.

This week proved to be very successful for the Edgewood Ladies Tennis Team. The first match on the books was Camden, which was an easy victory. Once Tuesday rolled around, we were ready to take on Palmyra, but once again the weather would not allow us to play the match. This is a big match for our coach, Mr. Mack, because his big brother is the coach of Palmyra and his niece plays number one singles.

This year at Edgewood the ladies tennis team seems to be doing very well. We have eight returning starters, including the number one singles player, Alexis Swintenko, who played as a freshman last year. Kristin Wolf is playing very strong and is recovering fast from her knee injury. Michelle Hamersly has improved a lot and might have a spot as a varsity player.

Grip it and rip it! When it comes to the game of tennis, that's my motto. Whether you play at the elite level or are a serious recreational player, the biggest obstacle that stands in the way of improving your game and conditioning level is time. Once the decision is made to enhance your ability to compete, getting fit has to become a priority.
