At a Cost, Wings Get "W" versus Rebel

Sunday, March 3, 2002

By David W. Unkle

It didn't take long for Philadelphia to score in last night's 19-17 win over the Ottawa Rebel. While most people were still getting comfortable in their seats, Kevin Finneran, on a move from the left of Rebel's goalie Andrew Leyshon, came in the slot unopposed and easily whisked one past Leyshon at 0:55 of the first quarter. Tom "Hollywood" Marechek made the score 2-0 on an over-the-shoulder shot that caught Leyshon moving in the wrong direction. Ottawa cut the score to 2-1 on Chris Knopliff's 21st of the season following a cross-checking call on Mark Millon. Unlike their last two home games, the Wings came out a played a stifling defense for the opening 15 minutes limiting Ottawa to one goal on thirteen shots. This was a marked improvement from their previous games against New Jersey and Columbus where they surrendered 6 goals and 3 goals, respectively, while only scoring one goal in the first quarter of both games.

For the 12,676 fans at the First Union Spectrum last night, much of the excitement was the result of Nickelodeon's Sponge Bob Square Pants Night. The Phantoms finished the month of February with a 2-6-4 record, the worst month of the 2001-02 season. In March of last year, Philadelphia had its best month of the season with an 8-4-1 record. The way the Phantoms played last night against the Hershey Bears, they will be hard pressed to challenge last year's success.

It's a Shoot-out as Township Edges Cinnaminson

Monday, February 25, 2002

By Mike Costantino
SJSports Staff Writer

In arguably the most exciting play in hockey, last night's semi-final game came down to a shoot-out. Washington Township converted on two of its five chances while Cinnaminson connected on only one as Township advanced to the finals for the third year in a row with a 6-5 victory. In a game that started out as a defensive struggle, not many people would have guessed the finish to this one. After a scoreless first period, Township scored when Mark Capone hustled to keep the puck in the zone and hit Eric Marano in front. Marano then slid the puck to Nick Martorano along the side of the net and his shot found the net and a 1-0 lead. Later in the second period, Bill Verdecchios' slap shot from the point found its' way through a maze of players and into the net. After two periods Township led 2-0.

Midway through the period Cherokee took the lead for good as Pat Henderson skated down the right side and found Jason Dragum in the slot and his one-timer found the net to make the score 2-1.
