Soccer Spotlight: Sunday, February 20, 2005 By David Deal The Philadelphia KiXX (16-11) dropped their third consecutive decision with today’s 8-2 loss to the Cleveland Force (11-12) in front of 4,406 fans at the Wolstein Convocation Center. The three-game dip marks the second time this season the club has dropped three consecutive games; Philadelphia’s 6-3 loss to the Force on November 26 began a four-game losing streak that concluded with the team’s 9-5 victory versus the Chicago Storm on December 12. The loss also drops the KiXX into a two-way tie with the Milwaukee Wave, who defeated the Chicago Storm earlier today to improve to 16-11. Defender Genoni Martinez registered the game-winning goal on a feed from former KiXX forward Chris Handsor at 4:09 of the second quarter. Stuart Dobson (2-2) took the loss in net for Philadelphia with 15 saves on 23 chances, while Jim Larkin (9-10) earned the victory in net for the Force, turning away 12 of the 14 shots he faced. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, February 19, 2005 By Jason Brown When you are sitting on top of the standings, other teams are always looking for ways to knock you down or in this case, hand you another loss to the season. For the Bulldogs from Haddonfield, they’re not use to losing and their record shows it. Matched up in the Cherry Hill East Invitational, St. Augustine was the next test for Haddonfield to pass as the Hermits have proved to themselves that they had what it takes to win the big game. St. Augustine’s game plan took a different twist when Brian Zoubek, the seven foot one center, was out of the game due to foul trouble. The rest of the team was able to convincingly pick up the 78-53 victory and increase their record to 20-1 in the Colonial Conference. |

The win boosts the Devils record to 11-14 overall and 10-8 in conference play. The win also assures the Devils of a playoff spot as they can finish no worse than 10-10 in the league and three of the 11 teams in the league already have 11 losses. (The top eight teams qualify for playoffs). Nyack falls to 15-10 overall and 10-7 in league play. |

High School Basketball: Thursday, February 17, 2005 By Susan Hall It’s always nice to attend a basketball game that has a rivalry that goes back as far as one can remember. Collingswood and Haddonfield have been competing for the Colonial Conference title for quite some time now and this year would be no different. The first time these two teams met it was a three point victory for Collingswood in their home gymnasium. This time traveling to the conference leading Bulldogs’ territory, Collingswood would control the momentum throughout this battle between two excellent girl’s basketball programs. For the second time this season, the Panthers would hand Haddonfield their only two losses of the season to pull within one game of the leaders. A balanced attack led to Collingswood’s 41-34 victory. |
Basketball Spotlight: Thursday, February 17, 2005 By Bob Heller Fred Brewer had a goal and three assists to lead Washington Township over a very tough Cherokee 2 squad 6-2 in second round playoff action at Hollydell on Wednesday night. After having a bye in the first round, Township drew Cherokee 2 fresh off its defeat of Paul VI on Monday night, thanks in large part to the stellar play in nets by S.J. Broadt. And after a scoreless first period, Broadt was still on his game turning away all 12 shots. Marco Jordan got Township on the board early in the second period on a nifty pass from Brewer and Chris Keyser. Matt Corvino, playing well in nets for Township, made that lead stand until the last three minutes of the period. With Cherokee down a man, Shane Kelly was sent in by Matt Cardillo and Steve Dellavecchia, and his short-handed goal tied the game at 1-1, heading into the final period. |

High School Basketball: Tuesday, February 15, 2005 By Jason Brown The excitement at Gloucester City High School was at an all-time high with the division leading Cougars from Schalick entering the building. By now, many know the talents of Paul Gause and his attempt in closing in on his milestone 3,000 career point total. Whether that intimidated Gloucester or not, the Lions didn't seem to be effected leading at the half by thirteen points. But from that point on, Schalick fought back to tie this game at the end of regulation and send it into overtime twice. Gause along with his teammates pulled out the victory by a 79-74 margin. |

High School Ice Hockey: Monday, February 14, 2005 By Mike Costantino West Deptford proved last night that hard work, good goaltending and few penalties go a long way as they defeated Eastern 3-2 in opening round playoff action at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. From the opening period, West Deptford did not look like the 12th seeded team, the last one to make the playoffs, they played as if they belonged and they sure shocked the Vikings. West Deptford carried the play in the first period as they out-shot Eastern 11-8 and scored with just over a minute remaining as Tyler Chellew put home a rebound of a shot by Kevin Walsh. After Rich Ferro gave Paul VI a 1-0 lead with just under four minutes remaining in the first period on a slap shot from just inside the blue line, Cherokee’s Kyle Manny tied the game on a feed from Dan Maugieri two minutes later. Heading into the second period the atmosphere had the feel of playoff hockey and both teams were hitting. |
