Phantoms Snap Funk, Take 5-2 Win Over Binghamton

Sunday, November 13, 2005

By Brian Smith
Philadelphia Phantoms Correspondent

Leading up to Sunday's rematch with the Binghamton Senators, the Philadelphia Phantoms had not won a game in nine tries. They had been close, but always seemed to come up on the wrong side of close. In fact, just one night earlier, the Phantoms were 32 seconds shy of earning two points and only skated away with one in a shootout loss in Binghamton. The second game of the home-and-home with the Sens proved to be very different, and it was a former Senator that made the difference, as Pat Kavanagh bagged the Phantoms first hat trick of the season to lead Philadelphia to a 5-2 win at the Wachovia Spectrum.

Camden Survives Sterling's Last Effort

Saturday, November 12, 2005

By Joyce Sagerty
SJSports Special Correspondent

It was amazing the way this game ended. No matter which team you were cheering for, it was an emotional roller coaster. The sixth seeded Panthers from Camden were in another situation where they had to win to move on. Winning a key game during the regular season allowed them a chance to capture the South Jersey Group II football title. Standing in their way were the third seeded Silver Knights from Sterling who featured arguably the best versatile player in the area with Arthur Ellis. The Panthers could not stop Ellis, but they were able to contain Sterling especially during the final moments of this first round game. An apparent touchdown on fourth and goal would be called back and Camden would hold on to upset Sterling 24-20. The Panthers will now host Collingswood next week.

Ocean City Finally Gets Past Kingsway

Saturday, November 12, 2005

By Joyce Sagerty
SJSports Special Correspondent

The Red Raiders from Ocean City have been in this situation so many times you would think that they have gotten use to all of the pressure. For the past nine years, the field hockey team has made it to the finals of the South Jersey Group III tournament. They have won their last three titles as the number one seed and loss three as the lower seed. The last time the Red Raiders won the sectional title not sitting in the top spot was seven years ago. Back as the highest seed in a bracket, Kingsway was back as the number two seed looking to defend their two year reign. Ocean City had come up on the short end of those games, but this year would be different. In the second overtime period, Melissa Hunter's goal minutes into the session would return the title back to Ocean City.

Pennsauken Pushes Aside Atlantic City

Saturday, November 12, 2005

By Jason Brown
SJSports Special Correspondent

It has been two years since the last time Pennsauken qualified for the playoffs and during that last appearance, they were the lower seed and loss in the first round. This year under different circumstances, the Indians were hosting the Vikings from Atlantic City in a South Jersey Group IV game as the second seed. Pennsauken were known for their running game behind Robert Darby, but it would be the defense that highlighted this game. For three quarters, the Indians kept Atlantic City off the scoreboard while the rushing attack began to find those wholes to run through. By the time the game ended, Pennsauken had gained over two hundred yards on the ground and advance to the next round with their 25-7 victory. Next up for Pennsauken is another home game against Absegami.

Moorestown's Supremacy Continues

Friday, November 11, 2005

By Susan Hall
SJSports Special Correspondent

This time it would be Wall looking to dethrone Moorestown's field hockey team from capturing their fifth straight sectional title. With that much success, opposing teams send out their scouts looking for some kind of weakness to exploit in order to gain an edge. It's close to impossible to defend speed, talent and the awesome skill of the game the Lady Quakers possess. Seventh seeded Wall continued to impress by cutting Moorestown's two goal lead in half in the second half. But the home team quickly turned this very competitive game back into their favor. Cassie Grossman had other plans as her third straight goal gave Moorestown the lead for good and capture the victory 4-1. Moorestown will now be looking to add their 16th state title in their school's history.

Ocean City Shuts Down Lacey, Pick Up Title

Friday, November 11, 2005

By Jerome Michaels
SJSports Special Correspondent

Maybe there was a bit of pressure on the number one seeded team in this year's South Jersey Group III boy's soccer title game. Not knowing what to expect from eleventh seeded Lacey Township, the Ocean City boy's soccer team were playing back on their heels waiting for something to happen. Lacey Township were the surprise team this year defeating the higher seeded teams which allowed them at a chance to pick up the group title and also defeat what many has considered the best team in South Jersey. For one entire half, the two teams were unable to score a goal, but the second half was a different story as the Red Raiders ripped off five unanswered goals to claim the title.

Haddonfield Work Their Way to the Top

Friday, November 11, 2005

By Clark Washington
SJSports Special Correspondent

On paper, the Delran Bears had the slight edge heading into this game. Even with the absence of one of their top scorer on the team, Delran was looking to pick up their third straight sectional title in front of their home crowd. Luckily this game is decided by the players on the field and the coaching staff that puts their players in the right situations. After the second seeded Bulldogs from Haddonfield found themselves trailing in this game, they would begin to match Delran’s intensity and not only tie this game but also take the lead early in the second half. This physically played game swung in Haddonfield’s favor and the Bulldogs would be able to hold off the charging Bears by a 2-1 margin..

David Moore had two goals and two assists, Christian Biscardi scored twice and Sean Furman added a goal and three assists as Washington Township easily handled Paul VI, 8-0. With the victory Township moved into a first place tie with Moorestown and Cherokee, but Township has played more games. Moore and Furman traded goals in the opening four minutes of the game; first Moore put home a rebound of a blast by Furman from the circle. Then Moore sent in Furman thirty-eight seconds later and Township led 2-0.

By Mike Costantino

Nick Salvatore stopped all thirty shots he faced and Mike Harmon scored his first goal of the season early in the third period as Highland edged Neumann 1-0 in Tier 2 action played at Hollydell. With both teams struggling offensively this year, Neumann is averaging two goals per game and Highland just over three, the game figured to be a defensive battle. Neumann carried the play for most of the first period, thanks in part to the power play as six of the seven penalties called were against Highland. But Salvatore made several huge saves and kept Highland in the game.

Gloucester Catholic Advances to the Finals

Thursday, November 10, 2005

By Susan Hall
SJSports Special Correspondent

When the post season begins and the seeding are announced, the players from participating teams can't help but notice where they are and if they are in the same bracket as the number one seeded team. But when you are the number one team, the focus switches to defending that status as opposing teams are emotionally looking to remove that ranking by ending their season. The Lady Rams from Gloucester Catholic were the number one seeded team from the South Jersey Non-Public Group B tournament hosting St. Rose in the finals. In a defensive battle, it only took one goal to win this game and Jennie Vartebedian would come up with the lone goal for Gloucester Catholic. The Rams will now travel to the College of New Jersey to a state final game against Villa Walsh.

Thursday, November 10, 2005

By Joyce Sagerty

Fresh from their win earlier in the week, the Lady Quakers were back on the field this time in the finals looking to defend their South Jersey Group III title. Clearview would be their next opponent trying to take the title away from the Quakers. On this very windy day where Moorestown had the advantage during the first half, Clearview's valiant effort during the second half would come up short. The seventh seeded Lady Pioneers would cut their deficit in half, but Moorestown would hold off Clearview's late run and claim the crown.

Eastern's Mission was a Success

Wednesday, November 9, 2005

By Joyce Sagerty

The Lady Vikings from Eastern has an impressive record. Six consecutive conference championships, six consecutive sectional championships, six consecutive state champions and have been labeled as the number one team in the nation for the past three years. The Vikings would take their 18-1-2 record before this game and go for lucky number seven. Head coach Danyle Heilig's field hockey team has demonstrated what it takes to continue that success and keep that winning tradition at Eastern. Against the Minutemaids from Washington Township, Heilig was not too pleased with her team’s performance during the first half. The Lady Vikings would respond in the second half and defeat Washington Township 5-1 and advance to their seventh consecutive sectional finals.

Ocean City Ends Highland's Chances

Tuesday, November 8, 2005

By Jerome Michaels

This past season has been an impressive accomplishment for the boy's soccer team from Highland. At the beginning of the season, most would not have considered the Tartans as one of the top teams in the area. Mike Cullen, Joe Cullen and Tony LaVigna have led Highland deep into this year's South Jersey Group III semi-finals game with high hopes of making it to the title game. One team standing in the way were the number one seeded Red Raiders from Ocean City. Most have considered them the number one team in South Jersey and with Rafael Duarte, Kyle Evans and Pat Tolomeo leading the way, there's a reason why they are so good. The Red Raiders completely controlled this game from beginning to end and advanced to the finals with a 6-1 victory over Highland.

Penalty Kicks Gives Delran the Win

Tuesday, November 8, 2005

By Vincent Lewis
SJSports Staff Writer

You hear it most of the time and it's the reason most players work so hard to avoid it. When a game has to be decided by penalty kicks, it takes away from the defense and the goal keeper's performance they had for two halves. Unfortunately it's the only way to determine a winner of a game when it can't be decided during the regulation and overtime periods. After Delran and Cinnaminson could not come up with the game winning kick during regulation, it was time for the shoot out session to begin. With the number one seeded Bears from Delran down 3-1 in penalty kicks to the Pirates, the home team would score the next four times to go ahead and defeat Cinnaminson and advance to the finals.

Repeating as champions is never an easy task to accomplish, but for the Lady Quakers girl's soccer team they have been enjoying their success so far. Winners of the Burlington County League Freedom Division and the number one seed in this year's South Jersey Group III tournament, Samantha Davis is the team's leading scorer but others have the ability to put the ball into the net. On this day, Brooke Cantwell led the Quakers in scoring against the fourth seeded Lady Falcons from Oakcrest to advance to the finals against Clearview. Moorestown used four different players to score goals as they went on to pick up the 5-1 victory.

Collingswood Moves into another Group Final

Monday, November 7, 2005

By Susan Hall

Time and time again the coaches send their players onto the field with the expectation of following every set of guidelines they must execute to coming away victorious. The relationship between player and coach is one that some would not agree with, but it is necessary for eleven players to work as one to complete their objective. West Deptford hosting Collingswood were two teams that have demonstrated their ability to win because of their relationship with their coaching staff. But sometimes it’s those individual performances that can change a game. Katie Feeley and Stefanie Bucholski were two players highlighting this team effort in defeating West Deptford 5-1 in a South Jersey Group II semi-finals game.

Tom Ruiz scored two goals and Joe Altamuro stopped 25 shots as Williamstown rallied from a two-goal deficit to tie Cherokee 3-3 in an intense and hard hitting game played in Voorhees. In a game that featured the only two teams without a loss and a possible preview of the championship series, Williamstown proved that they are a team to be reckoned with. After Justin Kinniry and Scott Weiner put Cherokee ahead 2-0 just five minutes into the game, Williamstown could have panicked and start taking silly penalties, but they kept there heads and given a two-man-advantage in the closing seconds of the period, Ruiz banged home an important goal to bring his team to within 2-1.
