High School Basketball (Playoffs):
Camden Wins South Jersey Group 3 Title

Monday, March 9, 1998

By Art Redd
SJSports Staff Writer

Coach Clarence Turner went into this title game with the same plan that worked all year for his Panthers. That is, to rely on his back court players to run the team and let his front court players clean up the rest. That's exactly what Camden did to defeat Middle Township 64-57 to capture the South Jersey Group 3 championship. Star guards DaJuan Wagner and Aaron Stephens were the sharp shooters hitting from the outside while Cantrell Hawkins, Kris Cooper and Arthur Barclay were the force on the boards for the Panthers. Camden now advances to the state semifinal game against Long Branch High School at Freehold Boro High School.

The Minutemen did something that most teams haven't done in a while. Washington Township ended the six game winning streak by Cherry Hill East to advance to the Group 4 quarterfinal game against Atlantic City. Township was able to find a way, for the third time this season, to handle the defense of the Cougars and defeat them 45-42. This game marked the return of Jeff Klauder who had been sidelined with an injury to his right leg for almost two months. His key free throws at the end of the game help seal the victory.

Moorestown Cruises to Next Round

Tuesday, March 3, 1998

By Art Redd

Moorestown didn't have any problems with Kingsway in their opening round playoff game. The Quakers jumped out to a 15-4 first quarter score and cruised to a 19-point victory. Kingsway was forced to shoot mostly perimeter shots with Moorestown's tight 2-3 defense. The Dragons could not convert on most of their outside shots which made it extremely hard to stage a comeback against Moorestown. This was just a tune-up game for the Quakers where they would travel to a much tougher West Deptford team in the quarterfinals. The home crowd enjoyed every minute of the 58-37 Moorestown victory.

Rosado was able to take the ball up the court and into the lane with authority. Once in the lane, she could either put the shot up or dish it off to the opener player. Rancocas Valley out scored Cherokee 19 to 8 in the deciding third quarter. Both teams played evenly in the final quarter, but the Lady Chiefs could not make up the deficit.

Cherry Hill East's defense was the key to their 32-16 victory over Pennsauken. The Cougars would start out with the traditional 2-3 defense and then switched to the 1-3-1 man press to stifle any Pennsauken inside game. Jeff Pela would score all the points for his team in the first half to take a 9-6 lead. Scott Plasky and Marcus Bullock would set up screens inside the paint to free up Pela.

Lenape Falls To Pemberton At Home

Saturday, January 24, 1998

By Art Redd
SJSports Staff Writer

If the way the first 6 points were scored was an indication of how the rest of the game would be, then this had all the implications of a very high offensive scoring game. Pemberton went to work right off of the opening tip with a 3 pointer. But Lenape would respond with a 3 pointer of their own. All of this would happen within the first 10 seconds of the game. To slow things down, the Hornets would apply a full court press right after their basket and surprise the Lenape Indians. This defense would result in 8 of their 19 first quarter points off of the press. Guards Willie William and Jurron Kelly were very aggressive to force over turnovers.

Coach Harold Little had a strong season last year for the Tartans and a win would get the 1998 season started on a good note. But it was Coach Clarence Turners' Panthers who would finally come together in the second half to post an 88-71 victory. Dujuan Wagner ran the floor well and Aaron Stephens drained in 37 points for Camden High School.
