SJHSIHL Double Elimination Tournament Begins

Sunday, February 2, 2003

By Mike Costantino
SJSports Staff Writer

As I'm sure you know by now, this year the SJHSIHL will use a double elimination tournament to crown its champion. A change from the normal format and I'm anxious to see how it all plays out. Will the best team from Tier 1, Clearview, be there at the end? Will playing in the AAA league help Washington Township as it competes in the tournament? Can the best team in Tier 2, Cherry Hill East, make some noise? Most of these questions might not be answered until early March, as that is when the tournament is scheduled to end. However, based on the way Clearview finished the season, they are definitely the favorites to win it all. Township, while not very successful in the win column in the elite league playing at a higher level, should help and everything will depend on goaltending.

Saturday, February 1, 2003

By Jerome Michaels

It was yet another test put in front of the Camden Catholic boy’s basketball team as they were assigned the duty of playing Middle Township in the Battle of the Bay tournament. The Panthers, last year’s group 2 champions, were now priming themselves for another run at the title going up against the Irish. It would be a battle, as Camden Catholic (14-1) would be involved with their toughest game of the season. When the final buzzer sounded to end the game, the Irish would have recorded their thirteenth straight win by defeating the Panthers 44-41.

Phantoms Tie Is Cause for Optimism

Saturday, February 1, 2003

By David W. Unkle

The Philadelphia Phantoms still have the monkey on their back but the load got a little easier as the Phantoms skated to a 3-3 tie in front of 12,081 at the First Union Center. Still mired in the longest winless streak of the season (0-5-1-0), the Phantoms ventured into unfamiliar territory against the Calder Cup Champion, Chicago Wolves. The Phantoms’ record when trailing after two periods of play is 1-13-0-1 coming into this afternoon’s game but demonstrated a willingness to play sixty minutes of hockey.

With the deadline for making the playoffs quickly approaching, there are several teams looking to stay above the five hundred percentage mark to assure themselves a spot in the upcoming postseason. The Pioneers from Clearview are one of those teams that are in a good position and took full advantage against a struggling Cumberland team. Clearview jumped out to a commanding lead in the first quarter and cruised the rest of the way. The Pioneers convincingly posted a 68-51 victory in a Tri-County Conference Royal Division contest.

Cherry Hill East Crowned Tier 2 Champions

Friday, January 31, 2003

By Mike Costantino
SJSports Staff Writer

Cherry Hill East capped off an almost perfect season with a 7-1 win over St. John Neumann to capture the Tier 2 Championship at Hollydell on Friday night. East finished the regular season with sixteen wins, no losses and one tie and with the victory showed that balanced scoring, discipline and solid goaltending will win championships. Five different players scored for East as James Brown, Mike Danyo, Louis Stomel, Kevin Desrochers and Tim Woods all found the back of the net. Goaltender Stephen Saunders, when called upon, made the saves. Unfortunately as the outcome of the game became less in doubt, some players lost focus on just finishing the game and were more intent on being physical.

For Clearview, Eight is Enough

Friday, January 31, 2003

By Mike Costantino
SJSports Staff Writer

Clearview scored eight goals in the first period paving the way to a 9-1 victory over Eastern in the last regular season game for Tier 1. It marked the second consecutive win for Clearview over Eastern, their main threat to winning the championship. The eight goals was a new team record for one period and the second line did a lot of the damage. All are under-classmen which consists of Bill Dunbar, who had three goals and two assists, Wyatt Fox (two goals and two assists) and Chris Riggs who chipped in with a goal and three assists. Senior forward Jon Probe added three goals.

The girl's competition from the Colonial Conference has been a competitive conference for years. It always seem as if Haddonfield, Haddon Heights, Haddon Township, Sterling and Collingswood are among the top at the end of the season. Well two of those teams, the Lady Knights from Sterling and Lady Hawks from Haddon Township were meeting for the second time this season. This time, Sterling came out on the winning side as they narrowly escaped with a 35-34 win on their home court.

Wilson Dominated Second Half Against Paul VI

Thursday, January 30, 2003

By Vincent Lewis
SJSports Staff Writer

When a team loses by a substantial margin the first time they've met on the basketball court, win or lose you come away with a learning experience. Realizing what was done wrong or for Woodrow Wilson, what was done exceptionally right, gives the coaching staff something to talk about the next time they meet. Today, it was the Eagles from Paul VI's turn to host the Tigers from Woodrow Wilson. Again, the Eagles would not be able to come up with a way to surprise their opponent as Wilson jumped out to a lead and never looked back. Wilson walked off the court with an 80-52 divisional win.

Lightning Strikes Lethargic Flyers

Tuesday, January 28, 2003

By David W. Unkle

The annual mid-season swoon appears to be on the horizon. Comparisons between the 2001-02 model and this year's team are different but similar. Former head coach was hung in effigy for not motivating the players and practicing fundamentals. The players claimed that they needed a different type of coach resulting in the demise of Barber and the hiring of Hitchcock. The frightening realization is that there is little change from last year both in roster and performance. Therein exists the problem…and the solution?

Palmyra Dominates Against Maple Shade

Tuesday, January 28, 2003

By Jerome Michaels
SJSports Special Correspondent

The Palmyra Panthers had an opportunity to let everyone of their players get their name in the box scores. Maple Shade was one of those teams were they were trying to remain competitive each and every time they took the court for a game. With only one win so far this season, they were facing a Panthers team who was in the hunt for a Burlington County Freedom Division title. Palmyra took control of the game from the opening tip-off and rolled past the Wildcats Tuesday night at Maple Shade High School.
