High School Soccer: Saturday, October 9, 2004 By Jason Brown There are quiet a few good soccer teams in our area that has the talent and ability to win every game on their schedule. Most of the time, those teams can find a way to come together as a team to walk away with the victory. When it comes down to winning it all, it has been stated that offense wins games, but defense wins championships. So far this season, the boy's soccer team from Ocean City has demonstrated that they can play defense and has the ability of scoring goals. Four goals were scored against Cherry Hill East on Saturday and the defense did their part in preserving the 4-0 victory in a non-league game. |
High School Field Hockey: Saturday, October 9, 2004 By Boog Williams The word going around Eastern (#1) this past week was that Kingsway (#3) better watch out this weekend. The field hockey team made good on its word, as they defeated Kingsway 9-0. In a rematch from last year’s 1-1 tie, which capped Eastern’s winning streak at 92, the game ended up being no match. |
High School Football: Saturday, October 9, 2004 By Jerome Michaels Sure there have been teams that have gone two to three football seasons without losing a game. When a team accomplishes any winning streak that has gone to double digits, that team deserves to be congratulated on playing together as a team to come away with all of those wins. Deptford's success continues on the football field when they hosted the Crusaders from Delsea. Two touchdowns by Sheldon Johnson and an insurance touchdown run by DaJuane Collins were enough points for the defense to preserve Deptford's 19-13 Tri-County Conference Royal Division victory. |

High School Field Hockey: Friday, October 8, 2004 By Crystal Parker When the whistle is blown indicating the start of the game, all of the pre-game preparations by the coaching staff finally would get executed on the field. Highland knew they would have a tough time against one of the leagues' leading scorers in Kim Brozosky. Trying to keep up with her throughout the entire game wouldn't be easy and it wasn't. The senior from Clearview Regional dominated her position during both halves of this Tri-County Conference Royal Division field hockey game. Brozosky added four more goals to her 17 season total helping the Lady Pioneers pick up the 5-0 victory at Highland. |
High School Football: Friday, October 8, 2004 By Vincent Lewis Some of you may remember an old science fiction show that stated, ‘Revenge is a dish best served cold’. Friday night at Shawnee High School, the Renegades had their chance to payback a team that handedly defeated them last year ending a six game winning streak. The Vikings from Eastern would do everything they could repeat their feat but Shawnee had other plans. Scoring twice in the first quarter, a 90 yard kickoff return and then a third quarter score was enough to hold off the Vikings and allow the Shawnee fans celebrate their 27-17 victory. |
High School Soccer: Friday, October 8, 2004 By Susan Hall For one half of the girls' soccer game between Haddonfield and Sterling, the outcome was not clear. Haddonfield hadn't loss a single game so far this season and they were only leading by a single goal to the end of the first half. The Lady Knights had put together a mini-winning streak and were looking for the big upset to extend that streak to three games. This game was the tale of two halves as Lady Bulldogs turned up the pressure scoring four more times. With Haddonfield's 6-1 victory, they would keep their undefeated record in tact. |
Ice Hockey Spotlight: Friday, October 8, 2004 By Al Cohen Craig Anderson recorded 30 saves and Matt Ellison had a goal and an assist as the Norfolk Admirals posted a 4-1 preseason victory over the Philadelphia Phantoms today at the Sovereign Bank Flyers Skate Zone. Anton Babchuk added a pair of assists for Norfolk, which was eliminated by the Phantoms in the East Division Semifinals last spring. Tennis Spotlight: Friday, October 8, 2004 By Bob Heller The USP women's tennis team made it three wins in a row with a 6 1/2-2 1/2 win over Widener University. The Devils captured five of the six singles matches to assure themselves of their third consecutive win. High School Soccer: Thursday, October 7, 2004 By Jerome Michaels The Crusaders were in unfamiliar territory and were looking to return home after losing their first two games of the season. Starting the season with seven wins in a row, the last two games for Bishop Eustace were ones to forget. Cherry Hill West and Shawnee were the two teams from the Patriot Division to defeat the Crusaders and Timber Creek was looking to make it their third from the same division. Bishop Eustace would be able to celebrate getting back on the winning side of the game with a 2-0 win. |
Tennis Spotlight: Thursday, October 7, 2004 By Bob Heller Four singles victories helped power the USP women's tennis team to their second straight win, a 5-3 triumph over Chestnut Hill College. Amanda Bedway (Fr., Blue Mountain HS/Orwigsburg, PA) won her sixth singles match of the season with an 8-0 por-set shutout of Kathleen O'Rourke at #1 singles. Bedway is now 6-1 on the season. |
High School Soccer: Wednesday, October 6, 2004 By Jerome Michaels In any game when you find yourselves fighting an uphill battle, there are two possibilities to deal with your situation. You can just give up and let the other team dominate or put the score out of your mind and play hard until the final seconds. You couldn't tell that Haddon Heights was trailing in this game by their play on the field. The Hawks were able to jump ahead in this game to swing the momentum in their favor. Haddon Township's defense would be able to withstand the Garnets assault and preserve their 3-0 win. |
Athlete Spotlight: Tuesday, October 5, 2004 By Gregg Williams Dana Ramsden, of Kingsway High School, will be one of the top players in the biggest game this year in field hockey. It will be played October 9 at 2pm (changed from 12 because of SAT Testing) at Eastern High School. In most polls in the State of New Jersey, Eastern is ranked #1, while Kingsway is #3. When you pick up a paper, turn to the sports section, and read an article with Kingsway field hockey in it, you will probably read quotes from Dana Ramsden or it will talk about how she played a big part in their win. She is one of the top field hockey players in South Jersey and she is only a Junior. Field hockey is not the only sport she plays, in the spring it is softball. She is an Honor Roll student with a 3.4 GPA, with interests in Biology, Student Council, School Band (Piano), and the Homecoming Committee. She squeezes in time to be a Trainer's Assistant. |
Team Conditioning Systems: Tuesday, October 5, 2004 By Gregory "Graig" White There comes a time in the life of every athlete where you have to put up or shut up, and I am reaching out to the athletes who are now facing that moment. I have been challenged and it is now time for me to put up or shut up. There is a coach in our area who believes (truly or otherwise) that the techniques me and some of my colleagues employ are not as effective as we are leading our athletes to believe. So I am reaching out to you, the athlete who wants to become the best basketball athlete you can be, I am putting together a training protocol that will take into consideration all of the skills needed to become an athlete that will not only compete for playing time on your team, but put you into a better position to compete for scholarship dollars. |
Ice Hockey Spotlight: Tuesday, October 5, 2004 By Al Cohen The Philadelphia Phantoms dropped a 4-2 decision to the Albany River Rats this afternoon at South Mountain Arena in their second of four preseason games. The game was tied at 1-1 through the first period, and again at 2-2 at the end of the second, but Albany was able to score the only two goals of the third period to pull away for the win. Zach Parise scored on the power play at 2:57 for the game-winner, while Aaron Voros added an insurance goal just under seven minutes into the frame. |
High School Soccer: Monday, October 4, 2004 By Susan Hall So far this season, the Lady Renegades soccer team from Shawnee has been enjoying a winning season sitting on top of the Olympic Conference Patriot division. Every competitive contest against a formable opponent proves how well the team works together on the field. So when Shawnee visited Bishop Eustace for an inter-conference match-up, it would be the Lady Crusaders whose team play turned the tables to pick up the victory. Eustace was able to build on their early lead to post the 3-1 win. |
