Cross Country Spotlight:
Devils Record Second Consecutive Third Place Finish Sunday, October 15, 2006 By Bob Heller In their final regular season meet before the Central Atlantic Collegiate conference championships, the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's cross country team recorded their second consecutive third place finish at yesterday's Cabrini Invitational at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia. The Devils finished with 66 points, just one shy on second place Gwynedd-Mercy College. Ursinus College won the meet with a score of 27 points. Leading the way for USP, as she has all season, was Joy Aifuwa. Aifuwa completed the 5,000-meter course in 20:09.24, her fastest 5K time this year and good enough for third place overall. Hayley Lentz followed in 11th place overall with a time of 22:10.09. |

Men's Harriers Close Out Regular Season with Eighth Place Finish Sunday, October 15, 2006 By Bob Heller The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's cross country team closed out the 2006 regular season yesterday afternoon with an eighth place finish at the Cabrini Invitational at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia. The Devils finished with 163 points, five behind seventh place Wesley College and 11 behind sixth place Catholic University. Rutgers-Camden took the team title with 64 points. The Devils were one of three schools to place two runners amongst the top ten overall finishers. Nick Willey finished fifth overall with a time of 27:59.22 while Matt Willard was seventh overall with a time of 28:12.45. USP's next finisher came in at 49th place overall. Nick Barkley completed the 8,000-meter course in 32:18.85. Barkley was followed by Mark Cifelli in 58th place with a time of 33:38.27. |
![]() Rutgers-Camden Volleyball Loses Tri-match to Rutgers-Newark, College of Notre Dame Saturday, October 14, 2006 By Mike Ballard The Rutgers-Newark women's volleyball team raised its record to 19-7 as it swept past Rutgers University-Camden and the College of Notre Dame in a tri-match here Saturday. The Scarlet Raiders swept Rutgers-Camden, 30-10, 30-28, 30-20, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match to improve to 5-2 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Newark completed its day by sweeping the College of Notre Dame, 30-18, 30-28, 30-6. In the third match of the day, the College of Notre Dame swept Rutgers-Camden, 30-28, 30-23, 30-19 to raise its record to 11-17. Rutgers-Camden, which has lost eight straight matches, dips to 5-13 overall and 1-6 in the NJAC. |

Cortes, Defense Lead the Way as Lynx Destroy Predators in Playoffs Saturday, October 14, 2006 By Rich Quiñones Marty Cross tossed three touchdown passes, while Luis Cortes hauled in three TD passes, as South Jersey routed New York, 28-0, in the second round of the NAFL playoffs in a game that ended midway through the fourth after the Predators walked off the field. In an embarrassing moment for the league, New York already upset with the fact that they had to drive down from Staten Island decided to beat the traffic early after quarterback Lou Scala disputed a penalty with a field judge. |
Volleyball Spotlight:
Devils Snap Streak with Win over Dominican Saturday, October 14, 2006 By Bob Heller The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia snapped a five-game losing streak with a 3-0 win over Dominican College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate College women's volleyball matchup this afternoon at the Bobby Morgan Arena in Philadelphia. The 3-0 win improves the Devils record to 8-13 overall and 5-7 in league play. Dominican falls to 4-18 overall and 4-10 in league play. USP won the games by scores of 30-26, 30-28, and 30-27. Offensively the Devils were paced by Lindsey Wenderoth's 15 kills. Andrea Cardine added 13 while Kirsten Lechner chipped in 10. Claire Tauschek paced the Devils defense with 26 digs, while Raeann Petruccelli, in her final home game as a Devil, came off the bench to record a career-high 19 digs. |
![]() Sterling Works Together in Victory Friday, October 13, 2006 By Susan Hall Each and every game a team will have one, two or maybe three players who have the right individual match ups enabling those players to take control of a game. A team would then begin to look for those right situations for those players and begin to receive positive results. It was Kierstyne McGuire's turn to lead the Silver Knights from Sterling field hockey team on several good scoring chances against Woodbury. For two halves, the Knights were able to kept most of the play in the attack zone and they would be rewarded with a 3-0 win. McGuire recorded a goal and two assists in a totally team effort. |

Drazen and Dougherty lead Vikings over Clearview Friday, October 13, 2006 By Mike Costantino Dan Drazen took care of the scoring and Mike Dougherty withstood a 21 shot third period as Eastern defeated Clearview 5-3 at Hollydell Arena on Friday night. Drazen scored three goals and assisted on another in scoring his second consecutive hat trick, having tallied three in the win on Monday night. Andrew Michael led the Clearview attack with two goals. Drazen scored the only goal of the first period, on the power play in the opening minute as the Vikings jumped out early. Dougherty made several big saves to keep Clearview scoreless. Drazen again scored an early goal, this time on a steal of a clearing pass and his quick blast, made it 2-0. |
High School Ice Hockey:
Timber Creek has Williamstown all Tied Up Friday, October 13, 2006 By Mike Costantino Timber Creek out worked Williamstown in skating to a 2-2 tie on Friday night at Hollydell, as goalie Chris Costa stopped all 13 shots in the third period to help secure the point. Dennis Cunard scores both Williamstown goals, Marin Marshall and Seth Pohle scored the goals for Timber Creek. Williamstown scored the only goal of the first period, with Josh Haynes making a diving stop at the point to keep the puck in the zone, he found Justin Osterdahl in the high slot, and his shot was stopped, but Cunard was there to put home the rebound. Timber Creek did not muster much offense, electing to play stay at home defense and wait for a scoring chance. |
![]() Audubon Clinches Title with Overtime Goal Thursday, October 12, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty It was a game that had to be earned. When Audubon's girls' soccer team took the field today, they knew they had to continue to play well in order to extend their unbeaten streak to fourteen straight games. Also at stake was another chance at claiming the Colonial Conference Patriot Division championship. Standing in their way of accomplishing those goals were the Lady Gators from Gateway who played an outstanding game of soccer against the Green Wave. These two teams were unable to score a goal during regulation and through the first overtime session. The game winning goal finally would be scored when a header by Ashley Cannon caught everyone by surprise and Audubon would begin to celebrate capturing their third straight title. |

Devils Lose to Philadelphia University Tuesday, October 10, 2006 By Bob Heller The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia lost to Philadelphia University, 3-0 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's volleyball matchup tonight at the Bobby Morgan Arena. The Rams had an easy time in game one, defeating the Devils 30-18. USP made things a bit closer in games two and three but came up on the short end both times, 30-23 and 30-24. The loss drops the Devils to 7-12 overall and 4-6 in CACC games. The Rams of Philadelphia University improve to 16-2 overall and 9-1 in league play. The Devils were led by Lindsey Wenderoth and Megan Wolfe who recorded 10 kills apiece. Claire Tauschek paced the Devils defense, getting 18 digs. Wenderoth and Andrea Cardine each added 10 digs. Ladonna Landmesser and Kayleen Pisczcek split setting duties with 16 and 15 assists respectively. |
![]() Special Teams the Difference for Shawnee on a Gray Night for Williamstown Monday, October 9, 2006 By Mike Costantino Paul Gray stopped 32 shots and Shawnee scored three power play goals and one short-handed as they handed Williamstown its first defeat of the year, a 5-2 loss at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Matt McDonald led the offense with two goals, Doug Akin and Justin Osterdahl scored the goals for Williamstown. Gray kept Williamstown off the board for two periods while his team built a 3-0 lead, two goals coming in the first period on the power play. First McDonald converted a pass from Ryan Wesley from behind the net, then with a 2 man advantage, Paul Kozarsky deflected a shot by Tom Humphreys and Shawnee led 2-0. Early in the second period, Williamstown got caught in a line change and McDonald sent in Brian Ruskowski and his breakaway goal made it 3-0. Meanwhile Gray was pitching a shut out as he stopped all nine shots in the period. |
![]() Drazen leads Vikings past Cherry Hill East Monday, October 9, 2006 By Mike Costantino Dan Drazen had three goals and two assists to lead the Eastern Vikings over Cherry Hill East 6-4 in Tier 1 action played at the Voorhees Skate Zone. Playing on a line with Torin Lawson and Derrick Schemmel, Drazen crated many scoring opportunities and set-up goals by Lawson and Schemmel. Eastern struck first as Drazen scored an unassisted goal ninety seconds into the game, and the Vikings carried the play for most of the period, out-shooting Cherry Hill 20-9. Jared Annarelli would tie the game midway through the period as he crated an opportunity down low and beat Evan Cohen. Eastern would regain the lead early in the second period as Lawson fed a pass from the slot to Drazen along the left circle and his quick shot found the net and it was 2-1. Moments later Cherry Hill responded on the power play as David Badecki put home the puck after a mad scramble in front of Cohen. |
![]() Pennsville Wins a Classic Battle in Double Overtime Monday, October 9, 2006 By Jerome Michaels When the schedules are presented to the teams at the beginning of the season, players sometimes take notice of all of the dates for the divisional games. Those match ups have a lot of meaning in the standings no matter what the teams overall record maybe. In a Tri-County Conference Classic Division, the Pennsville Eagles traveled to Gloucester to take on the Lions in a classic boys' soccer game. Pennsville has struggled a bit this season picking up wins but was focused on one objective and that was to come away with that all important division victory. It took two overtime sessions for it to occur, but the Eagles' Phil Cornman scored the game winning goal as time was expiring giving Pennsville the 2-1 win. |
![]() Raptor of the Week: Aubree McDermott Monday, October 9, 2006 By Mike Ballard Senior forward Aubree McDermott helped the Rutgers-Camden women's soccer team break out of its program-record scoreless string in a big way. McDermott scored the game-winning goal with 1:09 remaining Oct. 5 in a 1-0 victory over Philadelphia Biblical University, ending the Lady Raptors' scoreless drought at 417:24. In her next game, McDermott notched a hat trick and added two assists to set a program single-game record with eight points during a 7-0 win over the College of St. Elizabeth Oct. 7. Senior forward Aubree McDermott collected three goals and two assists for a school-record eight points and Rutgers-Camden exploded for six first-half goals on its way to the 7-0 victory over the College of St. Elizabeth. |
Tennis Spotlight:
Devils Clinch Playoff Spot with a Pair of Conference Wins Monday, October 9, 2006 By Bob Heller The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's tennis team secured a playoff berth in the upcoming Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championships with a pair of wins over conference opponents Sunday and this afternoon. On Sunday, the Devils defeated Caldwell College, 7-2. USP followed that win with a 9-0 shutout of Post University to finish the conference play with a 3-3 record, clinching the fourth and final playoff spot in the championships which will be held this weekend. Overall, the Devils improve to 4-6. The Devils entered Sunday's match needing a win to clinch at least a tie for the final playoff. USP did just that, sweeping the doubles matches against Caldwell College and taking four of the six singles matches for the 7-2 win. |
