Thursday, February 7, 2002

By Vincent Lewis

At the end of the month, schools that qualified for the South Jersey group playoffs will begin their quest to capture the title. For those teams, the remainder of their schedule is used to either polish their skills in preparation for the playoffs or capture the divisional title. Neither was true for Cherry Hill East hosting Eastern. Cherry Hill East would not be able to capture the divisional title from Eastern (17-1, 9-0) but the Cougars would get into the South Jersey Group IV playoffs. In this game, East would lead for most of the way until the Vikings came alive late in the fourth quarter to post a 58-55 win.

It was a game that on paper, the odds were stacked against your team. Most people tend to measure an event by looking at the records, using that to determine the outcome of a game. Paulsboro (11-3) were in third place in the Colonial Conference while West Deptford (9-5) was in fifth. For this game, West Deptford ignored that theory and defeated the Paulsboro Red Raiders at home by the score of 63-47.

Even the basic lay-up tends to roll off the rim leaving you in disbelief as a player and also a fan. Both Cherokee and Eastern were left with trying to figure out their shooter's touch through most of this game. Finally in the final quarter, Lance Evans hit three consecutive 3 pointers to finally break open the game by a 51 to 43 score.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Gateway came out of the starting block real strong in their basketball game with Sterling and for one half didn't look like a team that hadn't won a game this season. Sterling, which hasn't lost a game, looked like a team that was ready to suffer it's first defeat of the season, worked to keep Gateway in the game and to give their fans hope of a big upset. The game flowed for both teams and you could tell that everyone involved was prepared. The first half ended with Sterling holding a slim 34-28 lead.
