South Jersey Has 13 Sign Letters For Colleges To Play Football

Some of the fastest and most talented players in the South Jersey region signed letters of commitment to play football all around the USA. Edgewood had two players sign, Dennis Davis (Georgia Tech) and Aaron Johnson (Central Michigan). Dennis was to visit Wisconsin, Michigan State, Georgia Tech, then Penn State. He traveled to Wisconsin and Michigan State, then Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The warm weather is what he was looking for and he never made it to Penn State. Aaron visited Rhode Island, Rutgers and Delaware. He will make his official visit to Central Michigan this weekend. Both players were glad that this was over.

It was a great day for the fans at Eagles' Stadium on Thanksgiving Day when as the Edgewood Eagles (10-1) defeated the cross-town rival Overbrook Rams by a score of 14 - 8 in what was billed as the "Turkey Bowl" by the two schools. This game brought back old times were it was standing room only around the field.

Dennis Vespe's Mustangs were looking to extend their winning streak against Highland to five games, but the Tartans behind star running back Ayo Saba were looking to start a streak of their own.

Camden Catholic Missed Opportunity To Advance In Playoffs

The Fighting Irish from Camden Catholic were hosting the Green Knights of St. Joseph of Montvale in a Parochial Group 3 playoff meeting. After jumping out to a 14-0 lead, St. Joseph were shut down for most of the second half giving the Irish a chance for a spectacular comeback against a very good football team. The offense for Camden Catholic would come alive in the second half, but they weren't able to penetrate the Green Knights defense in the red zone and come up short in their attempt to defeat St. Joseph. A late interception and a touchdown by St. Joseph slammed the door on the Irish and come away with a 20-6 playoff victory.

Mighty Edgewood Eagles End Playoff Season With 1 Point Loss

It was both a happy day and a sad day for the players of the Edgewood Senior High School football team. They had taken their team to the state playoffs for the first time in the team's forty-two year history but just couldn't win with big game. Again faced with another obstacle of traveling on the road to Washington Township, the Renegades took the early lead and advanced to the Group 4 finals with a 21-7 semi-final victory.

Washington Township defeated Shawnee, 24-7, in the regular season. The Minutemen will be without quarterback Keven Williams, who suffered a shoulder injury last week against Lenape. Senior Jeff Brown will start this week after an impressive performance last Friday. Washington Township is led by running back Fred Von Bryant, who scored two touchdowns last week. Shawnee is coming off a 21-6 win at Cherokee. The Shawnee defense came up with two interceptions in the fourth quarter last Friday. Running back Adam Francks, who rushed for 116 yards last week, will get a heavy workload against the Minutemen.

Irish Defense Comes Up Big in Playoff Battle

The Camden Catholic Irish football team were heavy favorites in the first round of the Parochial Group 3 playoffs. But don't tell that to the Spartans of Holy Spirit. In a game were the offense of both teams struggled, the defense from Camden Catholic came up big when it counted all afternoon. Joe Kedra led the Irish defensive charge late in the game to put the finishing touch on a close game. Kedra, Matt Wilson and Joe LoCastro combined on forcing a safety to give Camden Catholic a 9-6 defensive victory in the first round of the playoffs.

Edgewood Defeats Toms River South in Opening Round of State Playoffs

Edgewood Senior (9-0) defeated a strong Toms River South (5-4) Saturday in the opening round of the state football playoffs. The final score was 48-20. When the locals hit the field at the beginning of the game, they were greeted by over seventy signs painted by a group of their classmates that gave encouragement and wished them good luck.

The Cherokee Chiefs and Lenii Lenape Indians squared off in a key football game at Evesham on Friday night. The Indians would get the best of the Chiefs, scoring an impressive 45-21 victory. This was Lenape's first victory on Cherokee turf in 12 years and couldn't of come at a more opportune time. The Indians were fighting for their playoff lives. With the win, they would be in and a lose would have been tossed out of the playoff picture. The Indians responded in grand fashion. Like bare knuckle greats Charles Bronson in "Hard Times", Phil Beddo in "Every which way but loose", and Bob Barker versus "Happy Gilmore", the Indians padded up and got ready for battle and battle they did.

The pride is back at Edgewood, and the timing couldn't have been better. After years of struggling at the bottom of the South Jersey football world, the Edgewood Eagles have soared to the top. The program which suffered through two one-win seasons in 1997 and 1998 is 7-0 and ranked second in the region. The Eagles are going to the playoffs for the first time in their history. They may even get the top seed in Group 3. A win over Bishop Eustace on Saturday will give Edgewood an Olympic National Division title. Edgewood is enjoying its finest football season ever...And its last.

Coach Sellers Quiets Critics With Convincing Win

Edgewood took a giant step forward in proving they were not just your ordinary undefeated team. With anger in their eyes, the Eagles were ready to take on a team that skeptics said they had to beat and again prove themselves. Camden Catholic went on the road to Winslow Township sporting their 5-1 record against the 6-0 Eagles. "Finally, maybe people will give us the respect we deserve", mentioned Coach Derryk Sellers. Edgewood were well prepared to pass that test of could they compete against a good team during their "soft" schedule. Coach Sellers' Eagles dominated the Irish and hammered them 43-14 with a defense that was on a serious mission.

In a game were one team needed a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Lenape Indians traveled to Overbrook High School in an Olympic Conference meeting. Lenape (5-1) were going into this game consider the clear favorites against the underdogs Overbrook Rams. With the regular season winding down, the Rams showed that they were not going to let their playoff hopes fade away in the wind. Jason Carr completed a halfback pass to Justin Thompson to upset the Indians by a score of 12-7.

You really have to throw out the records when the Lions and Rams play. You really can't leave until the final minute because it always goes down to the wire. The 2000 edition of this annual city classic once again lived up to its billing, as Gloucester Catholic held off a late Gloucester rally to come away with a 14-12 victory.

It may be the best rivalry in South Jersey. The annual Cape Atlantic American Division battle between Mainland and Ocean City isn't the oldest rivalry in the region, but it has become the most intense since the two schools emerged as Group 3 powerhouses in recent years. The game always leaves fans at the edge of their seats in the final minute of play, and the 2000 edition was no exception. The two 3-1 teams clashed in Linwood last Friday in front of a packed house on a beautiful autumn night, and the host Mustangs outlasted the Red Raiders, 20-12.

The Silver Knights of Sterling entered Friday Night's Colonial Conference contest as clear favorites against Gateway. The Knights entered the game with a 2-1 mark, and a victory over the 1-2 Gators would keep Sterling in contention in both the Colonial and the Group 2 playoff race. Sterling needed two big plays in the first half to set the stage for a dominating second half, as they defeated Gateway, 34-19. The two teams were tied, 13-13, at the half, and Sterling coach Todd Green was grateful his squad wasn't trailing as they went to the locker room.

On a beautiful autumn afternoon in Pine Hill, the Eastern Vikings and Overbrook Rams took the field for an Olympic Conference battle with post-season implications. Emotions were running high throughout the game. It wasn't because both teams entered the contest at 1-1 and were looking to remain in the thick of the playoff race. It was because of a much greater battle being waged by a young man who has touched the hearts of everyone in South Jersey. It was a day for the Vikings to play for Adam Taliaferro. The former Eastern star and 1999 player of the year in South Jersey continues his fight to walk again. Taliaferro, now at Penn State, suffered a spinal injury in the Nittany Lions' loss to Ohio State last weekend. He still cannot move his fingers and legs, and there is no guarantee that he ever will. On Thursday, Eastern took the field for the first time since Taliaferro's injury.

Pennsauken Holds off Highland's Charge

Knowing that you can count on someone being there for you has its advantages. On the football field a quarterback's best friend is not only having the offensive line protecting you, but also having a receiver who runs that passing route to free himself for a first down. Pennsauken's tandem of quarterback Andrew Virnelli and wide out Tawan McNair were showing how well they counted on each other during their game on the road at Highland High School. The junior wide receiver McNair had 96-yards receiving in the first half as Virnelli lead Pennsauken over the Tartans in a close game, 21-19. Highland had a chance to tie the game but failed to convert on their two-point conversion attempt.

It had been five years since West Deptford beat Woodbury on the football field. While the Eagles were awarded a forfeit victory off the field over the Thundering Herd last fall, West Deptford approached Saturday's contest with the memory of a 14-8 loss on the field. Only the accidental use of an ineligible player by Woodbury gave the Eagles the win in the record books. But when the two teams took the field on a rainy Saturday morning in Woodbury, the Eagles washed away five years of frustration with an impressive 20-0 victory. West Deptford not only raised their record to 2-0, they also enjoyed one of the most satisfying victories in school history.

Two big plays finally decided this meeting between the Quakers of Moorestown and the Greyhounds from Northern Burlington Friday night. After watching the first half end with a 7-7 score, Moorestown went ahead for good when running back Albert Young dashed for a 64-yard touchdown run that electrified the home crowd. Senior starting quarterback Mark Thompson accounted for the other big play with a 72-yard touchdown run. With the 28-7 win over Northern Burlington, Moorestown raised their record to 3-0 in the Burlington County, Liberty Division meeting.

The Triton Freshmen football team looked to bounce back this week after an embarrassing 34-13 loss in their opener. The Cherry Hill East team also went down hard in their first game. This gave both teams a reasonable shot at victory, as there was no clear favorite. Heading into the game the Triton coaches asked for more intensity from the players and that is what they received. Going into this game, Edgewood's head coach Derryk Sellers felt his Eagles would make a strong case for conference title for 'The Last Time'. With 8 starters returning on both offense and defense, the race for conference champs was in their hands for the Y2K season. "This year's team would be considered one of my favorites and will be very competitive", mentioned Sellers. Both sides of the ball for Edgewood were having their way through the entire game. The visiting Camden Panthers were no match against the Eagles defense as Edgewood rolled to a 46-0 victory behind the running of Brandon Osborne.

The meeting between the Shawnee Renegades visiting the Fighting Irish of Camden Catholic was the first game of the season for both teams. The opening day ceremonies was highlighted with the Fighting Irish being led onto the field by an Irish Bagpipe marching band. That excitement would be carried onto the field as the Irish jumped out to the early lead. Shawnee stuck to their game plan. The Renegades' ground game pounded out the victory as they scored twenty-seven unanswered points to capture the victory.

Here in Evesham, a bit of history unfolded on Friday night. A momentous occasion as big as man's so-called landing on the moon, the discovery of America, or the invention of the remote control. The Cherokee Chiefs football team took the field against Cherry Hill West in the ever night time football game at the famous Cherokee Bowl. The gathering of Chief alumni were not disappointed as Cherokee put on a display of football that was reminiscent to the style of play of their powerhouse clubs of the early eighties. The Chiefs beat Cherry Hill West by a 61-7 score.

Triton Loses Opener in Freshmen Football

The Triton freshmen football team opened up the 2000 campaign at home on Friday. What were high hopes heading into the game were quickly faded as Eastern marched into the end zone methodically on their first possesion taking an early 8-0 lead. Things only got worse for the home team as they were forced to punt four times on their first six possesions. The other two resulted in fumbles. At the half Triton was stunned as they trailed 34-0 as Eastern crossed the goal line every time they had the ball in the first half.

Minutemen Hoping For A Happier Finish

When the Washington Township Minutemen concluded their 1999 season, there were plenty of accomplishments to look back on. The Minutemen returned to the playoffs after a two year absence, and remained in the hunt for the Olympic American Division title until the final week of the season. However, Washington Township was left with a feeling of unfinished business. A blocked extra point knocked the Minutemen out of the playoffs as they fell to Jackson, 10-9. One week later, the Minutemen were eight yards away from upsetting Eastern and capturing the Olympic American crown. But the Vikings kept Washington Township out of the end zone and took home the championship.

Ah, the start of the football season has finally arrived with the anticipation of having a successful year. With all the preparations made during the off season and the endless hours of football practices, high schools throughout South Jersey were ready to show all the improvements they have worked hard on. Even the parents club from Camden Catholic was happy to show off their "Goal Line Stand". Their hard work and dedication for their high school was very noticeable with their new food court pavilion.

Massacre at West Point Keeps Governor's Cup in New Jersey

The third annual Governor's Bowl Football Classic between the graduating all-stars from New Jersey and New York was held on a perfect Saturday afternoon. This year's meeting was on the historic campus of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. Some of the on campus cadets witnessed the New Jersey all-stars keeping the Governor's Bowl Cup in the Garden State with a 48 -7 trashing of the all-stars from New York.

Governor's Bowl MVP Won by Adam Talieferro

The state of New Jersey was well represented in the third annual Governor's Bowl All-State Classic football game on the campus of the US Military Academy at West Point. With the game being played in the state of New York, home field advantage was taken away with the Garden State defense. Eastern defensive back Adam Taliaferro, the game's defensive MVP for New Jersey, dominated his position by forcing the New York offense to throw away from his side of the field. Taliaferro was well represented with his family in the crowd and South Jersey proudly cheering him on.

Overbrook Retires Ron Dayne's No. 33
Coach Miller To Retire From Teaching

The Overbrook Rams football team, part of the Lower Camden County Regional School District #1, finally got a chance to retire the jersey worn by #33 Ron Dayne. Ron Dayne graduated from Overbrook in 1996, and went on to become the All Time leading rusher for NCAA Division 1A with 6397 yards at Wisconsin. Ron also won the Maxwell Award for the outstanding college football player, and the Grand Daddy of them all, the Heisman Trophy.

Sitting across from six-foot-four Rowan Hall of Famer, Mr. Felton Jones, it's hard to believe that he was ever challenged in sports.

"I'm what you call a late bloomer," he explains, settling back in his chair. "I went to college to play baseball. I could hit any ball, but I was only so-so in football. As I got better, I began to love football."

Over the last 3 months, Ron Dayne broke the NCAA career rushing record on November 13th, won the Heisman Trophy on December 11th, won the MVP (second time) for the Rose Bowl on January 1st, and on January 7th, came home to visit his local schools.
