Second Half Surge by Shawnee Completes Their Comeback Season

Sunday, December 8, 2002

By Jerome Michaels
SJSports Special Correspondent

It has been done before, but it's always special when you are involved. Seeded in the fifth position of this year's group 4 bracket, the Renegades from Shawnee had an uphill battle going up against the first and second seeded teams. After stunning the top seeded Toms River North with their overtime win, Shawnee waited until the second half of this game to finally put points on the scoreboard. The Renegades pushed 14 unanswered points across the goal line against Washington Township to capture their first South Jersey Group IV title in school's history. The final score of 14-10 was Shawnee's eighth straight win of the season.

Mainland's Balanced Attack Enough to Win Group 3 Championship

Sunday, December 8, 2002

There was a state of disbelief on the Delsea sideline late in the final quarter of this championship game. With the clock winding down and the Crusaders down two touchdowns, the Mustangs were in the final moments of upsetting the number one-seeded Crusaders. Visiting Mainland demonstrated that they could not only stop the powerful running attack, but also pass the ball with success. Mike Bradway was at the receiving end of those passes as he caught four passes for 181 yards and a touchdown. Mainland's defense would come up big as they walked away with the 21-7 South Jersey Group 3 championship victory.

Plain and simple, you need to stop the running game by Paulsboro in order to have a chance at winning against the Red Raiders. It's a tough task to slow down the ground attack that is lead by senior runningback Issac Redman for 4 quarters. It was no secret to what the game play was by Paulsboro in their championship game with the Flashes from Florence. Redman was a determined player running his way to four rushing touchdown leading Paulsboro to their third straight title. The Red Raiders' defense also keyed their 50-0 win at home to start the celebrations for Paulsboro.

Dramatic Overtime Win Gives West Deptford Their First Title

There were several key decisions that both of these teams made throughout this South Jersey Group 2 championship game. All in West Deptford will remember the one choice made by coach Clyde Folsom. "The community has been waiting for this for 45 years. We can't enjoy this one by ourselves. We have played this one for everyone who's out here right now", mentioned an exuberant coach after the Eagles defense stopped Buena's two-point conversion attempt to win this game. West Deptford would not be upset that their coach wanted to give thanks to the community before congratulating the team first in their 21-20 overtime win.

Death, taxes and Isaac Redman. Don't get me wrong, Paulsboro is not a one man team, they play with a sense of kowing just how good they are. And are always looking for ways to show the rest of the football community in New Jersey. The play of the day was a 73 yard punt return by Redman in the 3rd quarter that all but sealed the victory for Paulsboro, putting the Red Raiders up 21-0.
