Monday, May 14, 2007 By Susan Hall It only took one run, but that run that seemed so innocent was the biggest run of the game. During their first at bat, the Lady Vikings from Eastern was able to score a run and jumped out to an early lead against the Lady Mustangs from Triton. As the game progressed through the middle innings, the one run was the main focus by both teams. Starting pitchers Brittany Hicks for Eastern and Britney Yocum for the Mustangs were able to keep their opponents scoring any runs. But that lone run to start the game would hold up and the Vikings would pick up an Olympic Conference win. |

Saturday, April 14, 2007 By George Brookings With a new season of boys' lacrosse underway, based on personal opinions one team has to be selected as the best in our area. And with that much attention now on that team, opposing squads will either use that ranking of a team as a motivating factor to see how well they can compete them as well as other teams or just intimidated. But don't be fooled, the reason for the Vikings from Eastern High School is successful is because of their defense. By limiting your opponent's scoring chances will only keep your offense in the game no matter what the score maybe. In an Olympic Conference American Division game played at Eastern, the Minutemen from Washington Township scored the first goal just seconds into the game. The Vikings would respond by scoring six unanswered goals during the first half and then dominated the second half to pick up the 15-5 victory extending their winning streak to four games. |

Monday, February 5, 2007 By Mike Costantino Justin Osterdahl scored with less than two minutes left in the game as Williamstown rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Eastern 3-2 in playoff action at Hollydell. Eric Miller of Eastern scored the only goal of the first period as the underdog Vikings carried the play for much of the period out-shooting Williamstown 14-5. Torin Lawson scored a power play goal early in the second period and the lead was 2-0, but goals by Bill Fennimore and Tim Larkin tied the game heading into the third period. Both teams managed only six shots each in the final period, but it was Osterdahl who found the net and allowed Williamstown to narrowly escape. |

Monday, January 29, 2007 By Mike Costantino Washington Township scored three goals in the first six minutes of the game as they defeated Eastern 8-4 at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Needing more players to step up and fill in until the return of seniors Cameron Rowand and David Moore, Township had six different player score goals, led by freshman Jared Emmet with a hat trick. Township converted on the power play as Emmet had an empty net after a perfect cross-ice pass from Colin Davis had drew over the goaltender. Marc Remini and Christian Fleagle added goals forty one seconds apart and suddenly it was 3-0. Eastern got on the board as Jon Hayes banked the puck off the skate of Township goalie Chris Rainey to cut the lead to 3-1, but a late goal by Jonathon Paulo restored the three goal lead at 4-1. |

Friday, January 19, 2007 By Mike Costantino Torin Lawson scored with two seconds left in the game as Eastern upset Moorestown 5-4 in Tier 1 action played at Hollydell. The win was only the third for the Vikings, who have struggled the last few years after having been one of the top teams since the late 1990's. Tonight was a glimpse of the past as great goaltending and hustle, a trait of Vikings team past, was the key to their upset over Moorestown. Eastern goalie Evan Cohen, despite goals against over six, played outstanding and was the main reason his team was in position to steal the game. After a scoreless first period, Cameron Dougherty put the Vikings up 1-0, Moorestown would score two goals in a span of eight seconds, both in a four-on-four situation, to take a 2-1 lead as Alec Miller and Ben Doganiero got the goals. |

Monday, January 15, 2007 By Mike Costantino Kyle Manny and Justin Kinniry scored three goals each and Tom Paradise added two goals and two assists as Cherokee flew past Eastern 11-1 in action played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Having been a successful organization over the years the Vikings have struggled these last few years and instead of battling for the top spot, they find themselves near the bottom of the standings, and probably in Tier 2 next season. Thanks to the mercy rule, where a team with a 10 goal lead will be declared the winner, the game was stopped early in the third period when Ryan Thompson scored the eleventh goal. Torin Lawson scored the lone Viking goal. Kevin McMahon also scored twice for Cherokee. |

Monday, December 18, 2006 By Mike Costantino Andrew Carsusone scored two goals and Doug Akin added a goal and two assists as Williamstown defeated Eastern 6-3 in Tier 1 action played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Dan Drazen scored all three goals for Eastern. The Vikings jumped out early in the game as Drazen scored a power play goal two minutes into the game. But that lead was short-lived as Williamstown responded with goals by Mike Mathews and Justin Osterdahl to take a 2-1 lead after the first period. Carsusone put home a rebound of a shot by Josh Haynes midway through the second period to put Williamstown ahead 3-1 and Akin added a goal just beating the buzzer at the end of the period for a 4-1 margin. |

Monday, December 11, 2006 By Mike Costantino Dan Folkman scored three goals and assisted on two others to lead Cherry Hill East to a 6-3 win over Eastern. The victory was the first of the season for East after eleven straight losses. With a roster full of underclassmen the team should only get better. Folkman got the offense going as he scored less than a minute into the game. Torin Lawson responded about ninety seconds later scoring on a breakaway. Dan Drazen gave Eastern a 2-1 lead scoring a short-handed goal late in the period, but Folkman responded with a power play goal to tie the score at 2-2 after one period. |

Monday, December 4, 2006 By Mike Costantino Joe Tropiano scored five goals to lead Clearview over Eastern 7-3 in Tier 1 action played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Monday night. The game was only 2-1 heading into the third period, but Clearview blew the game open scoring five goals. Derrick Schemmel scored the only goal of the opening period to give Eastern a 1-0 lead, but Tropiano scored twice in the second period, once on a breakaway and one short-handed to put Cherokee up 2-1. Cherokee scored two goals in the first three minutes of the third period, with Sean Stamm converting on the power play to 4-1. Dan Drazen would bring his team back as he scored two goals in a matter of seconds, both on the power play to cut the lead to 4-3. But Tropiano scored the last three goals of the game, again short-handed, and his last one into an empty net as Clearview skated off with a 7-3 win. |

High School Ice Hockey: Friday, December 1, 2006 By Mike Costantino Tim Larkin netted a hat trick and Williamstown survived a slow start and defeated Eastern 4-1 in front of a sparse crowd at Hollydell. Eastern goalie Evan Cohen played a sparkling first period stopping all 16 shots and Eastern took a 1-0 lead in the second period as Derrick Schemmel deflected a shot from the point. Larkin tied the game just over a minute later and Josh Haynes put Williamstown ahead with a top shelf goal later in the period And thirty seconds later Justin Osterdahl sent in Larkin for a 3-1 lead. Larkin completed his hat trick early in the third period, again on a feed from Osterdahl and Williamstown skated away with a 4-1 victory. |

High School Ice Hockey: Friday, November 10, 2006 By Mike Costantino Washington Township scored six goals in the third period to break open a close game and they went on to defeat Eastern 8-0 in front of a sparse crowd at Hollydell. With both teams missing key players, each team called up players from their JV teams to fill out the roster, and Township got an earl contribution from one of the players. After Christian Biscardi scored at the six minute mark to give Township a 1-0 lead, Jared Emmet scored his first goal as a Minuteman on a pass from Christian Fleagle to make it 2-0. |

Thursday, November 9, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty Getting that first goal of the game during the group finals always gives that team the edge not only on the scoreboard but also for a team's confidence. Competing for the South Jersey Group IV girls' soccer champion, the Lady Vikings from Eastern had all of the confidence that they could defeat the Minutemaids from Washington Township for the first time this season. Eastern would score the first goal of the game early in the first half but knew that it would take solid defense to maintain their lead. The Vikings would score again during the first half and the defense would preserve their 2-0 lead through the second half. With the win, Eastern were able to successfully pick up their second sectional title in a row. |

Monday, October 16, 2006 By Mike Costantino Moorestown scored three goals in the final seven minutes of the game to rally to defeat Eastern 3-1 in action played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Eastern goaltender Evan Cohen did everything he could in facing 62 shots and not allowing a goal until the seven minute mark of the final period. Earlier in the game he made several point blank saves to keep the game scoreless. Moorestown goalie Keith Mulligan was doing his part stopping all 28 Eastern shots through two periods. The Vikings broke through early in the third period after some hard work by Jon Hayes and Eric Miller to keep the puck in the zone, with Joel Romberger scored his first goal of the season. |

High School Ice Hockey: Friday, October 13, 2006 By Mike Costantino Dan Drazen took care of the scoring and Mike Dougherty withstood a 21 shot third period as Eastern defeated Clearview 5-3 at Hollydell Arena on Friday night. Drazen scored three goals and assisted on another in scoring his second consecutive hat trick, having tallied three in the win on Monday night. Andrew Michael led the Clearview attack with two goals. Drazen scored the only goal of the first period, on the power play in the opening minute as the Vikings jumped out early. Dougherty made several big saves to keep Clearview scoreless. Drazen again scored an early goal, this time on a steal of a clearing pass and his quick blast, made it 2-0. |

Monday, October 9, 2006 By Mike Costantino Dan Drazen had three goals and two assists to lead the Eastern Vikings over Cherry Hill East 6-4 in Tier 1 action played at the Voorhees Skate Zone. Playing on a line with Torin Lawson and Derrick Schemmel, Drazen crated many scoring opportunities and set-up goals by Lawson and Schemmel. Eastern struck first as Drazen scored an unassisted goal ninety seconds into the game, and the Vikings carried the play for most of the period, out-shooting Cherry Hill 20-9. Jared Annarelli would tie the game midway through the period as he crated an opportunity down low and beat Evan Cohen. Eastern would regain the lead early in the second period as Lawson fed a pass from the slot to Drazen along the left circle and his quick shot found the net and it was 2-1. Moments later Cherry Hill responded on the power play as David Badecki put home the puck after a mad scramble in front of Cohen. |

Tuesday, September 26, 2006 By Stephanie Wright Eastern's field hockey team doesn't take any team lightly. Knowing that any team can beat another team on any given day, it is important to play at the highest level each and every time they take the field. This time traveling to Washington Township to take on the Minutemaids in an Olympic Conference competition, Eastern used their speed and stick handling abilities and created several scoring chances early and led by three goals at halftime. The Vikings continued their fast and aggressive play all during the second half and were able to record a 10-1 victory. Jessica Allen, Kelsey Mitchell and Meghan Dawson each scored three goals apiece for Eastern. |

Monday, September 18, 2006 By Clark Washington When the Cherokee Chiefs boys' soccer team arrived at Eastern High School, you could see how confident they were before the start of their game against the Vikings. As a team playing as a single unit, Cherokee does possess the talent to defeat any opponent they compete against on the field. But so does the Vikings. During the first half of this game, both teams aggressively were determined to win every ball and setup for a chance to score. Eastern's Harry Middleton would get his foot on a loose ball in front of the net and score the eventual game winner. Both teams continued their physical play during the second half, but the Vikings would walk away with the 1-0 victory. |

Saturday, September 9, 2006 By John Daglian The 12th annual Viking invitational Girls Volleyball tournament was held at Eastern High School on Saturday September 9th. This tournament normally features several of the top Group 4 schools in the state. This year the participating schools were Eastern, Cherry Hill East, Cherry Hill West, Memorial, East Brunswick, Wayne Hills, Hackensack, West Windsor South and Clifton. The two pools were divided as follows: Pool #1 consisted of Eastern, Wayne Hills, Memorial and Cherry Hill West. and West Windsor South. Pool #2 contained Cherry Hill East, East Brunswick, West Windsor South, Hackensack and Clifton. |

Thursday, May 11, 2006 By Stephanie Wright The girls' lacrosse game between the Lady Renegades from Shawnee traveling to Eastern had several highlights to it even before the game started. One important factor for the Vikings was that they had to win this game against one of the top team in New Jersey in order to keep their playoff hopes alive. Eastern would pull within a single goal early in this game when Meghan Bain scored her 100th goal of her career at Eastern. But after that milestone goal, it would be all Shawnee for the remainder of this Olympic Conference game. Becca Perkins scored six times helping the Renegades post an 18-4 victory over the Lady Vikings. |

Thursday, April 27, 2006 By Clark Washington It was a match-up that both teams had something to prove. The boys' lacrosse team from Shawnee knew that if they were going to win at Eastern High School and take on the undefeated Vikings, they would have to play smart. Eastern has demonstrated their ability in playing solid defense and counter that with a potent offense is the reason they have won eight games in a row. The Renegades would overcome a two goal halftime deficit by scoring eight unanswered goals during the second half to completely dominate this Olympic Conference competition. Mike Gersie and Mike Burns would lead the Renegades in scoring and Shawnee would post the 11-6 decision over Eastern. |

The coaching staff as well as other players will sometime ease that bad feeling by pointing out all of the good things that happened during a game. Playing hard, playing smart and not giving up could be found on the field could be found when the Lady Vikings from Eastern hosted Kingsway. For Eastern, they had loss a close one goal game yesterday to Washington Township. Eastern would score fourteen first half goals and cruise to a 20-4 win over Kingsway in a non-league girls' lacrosse competition. |

Monday, January 30, 2006 By Mike Costantino Six different players scored as Williamstown rolled over Eastern 6-1 at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Monday night. Eastern was out-shot 41-10 and despite surrendering six goals, goalie Zak Fayer played strong in nets, with three of the six goals coming from odd-man rushes. Mike Lamplugh put Williamstown up 1-0, scoring on a screen shot from the point two minutes into the contest. Eastern could not muster up any offense and scored their only goal of the game on their only shot of the period. |

Monday, January 23, 2006 By Vincent Lewis Two teams from the Tier I division of the SJHSIHL were looking to gain some momentum before the playoffs met on the ice at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Both Eastern and Cherry Hill East were looking to pick up an important win for the team as the regular season was coming to an end. Eastern would lead by one goal heading into the second period, but East would erupt for six goals all scored by different players to put this game away. Cherry Hill East's John Faford would record a goal and two assists during that very success period. East, behind goalie Mike McNulty's 19 saves, blasted past Eastern by a final score of 8-1. |

Saturday, January 21, 2006 By Anthony Phillips Every team sport has their strategies on how to come away with the win. Wrestling is no different as the decisions of the coach staff could determine the outcome of a match. But no matter what the coach's instructions are, the game or match is decided by the kids' individual efforts on the mat. In a non-league match held at Eastern, the Vikings were hosting the Crusaders from Delsea. With only four points separating these two teams heading into the final bout, the Vikings would be looking for a pin in order to set back Crusader’s chances of coming away with the win. But Mike McGaha turned the tables and pinned his opponent to secure the 40-30 decision for Delsea. |

Monday, January 16, 2006 By Susan Hall There were two teams looking to end two different streaks during the third annual Cougar Classic girls’ basketball tournament held at Cherry Hill East High School. For the Lady Lions from Gloucester City, they were looking to extend their two game winning against Eastern. The Vikings on the other hand were trying to stop a losing streak of two games. The way the second half started, it appeared as if each team would extend their streaks by one game. Appearances can be deceiving especially when a team completely dominates an entire quarter to control a game. Eastern’s eleven point lead heading into the final quarter was enough to hold onto their 59-51 victory over Gloucester. |

Friday, December 2, 2005 By Mike Costantino Washington Township received goals from seven different players and coasted to an 8-0 victory over the Eastern Vikings in Tier 1 action at Hollydell on Friday night. Dressing mainly junior varsity players due to a school function, Eastern was in the game for the first period thanks in part to goalie Zak Fayer, as Township launched 17 shots, but only Christian Biscardi and Sean Furman were able to beat Fayer and Township led just 2-0 after the first period. |

Wednesday, November 9, 2005 By Joyce Sagerty The Lady Vikings from Eastern has an impressive record. Six consecutive conference championships, six consecutive sectional championships, six consecutive state champions and have been labeled as the number one team in the nation for the past three years. The Vikings would take their 18-1-2 record before this game and go for lucky number seven. Head coach Danyle Heilig's field hockey team has demonstrated what it takes to continue that success and keep that winning tradition at Eastern. Against the Minutemaids from Washington Township, Heilig was not too pleased with her team’s performance during the first half. The Lady Vikings would respond in the second half and defeat Washington Township 5-1 and advance to their seventh consecutive sectional finals. |

Friday, November 4, 2005 By Mike Costantino Dan Drazen scored his first two goals of the season and Torin Lawson had three assists as the Eastern Vikings won their first game of the season defeating Clearview 3-0 in SJHSIHL action played at Hollydell. Most coaches will tell you that scoring first is important and tonight this was the first game all season the Vikings scored first as Drazen found the net on a 2-on-1 with Lawson less than two minutes into the game. Later in the period Drazen slid the puck from behind the net to Derrick Schemmel all alone in front and his quick shot beat Clearview goalie Adam Wingate for a 2-0 lead. |

Monday, October 31, 2005 By Jerome Michaels With the early start of the tournament play, most of the student body would be in class learning their lessons. But once the school bell sounded at Eastern High School, fans began to arrive with balloons, a cake and a few signs. The players and fans were in anticipation of head coach Jamie McGroarty picking up this 200th victory. Seven minutes into the Lady Vikings first round girl’s soccer game against Triton, Jeanna Favat’s goal gave Eastern a lead they would not relinquish. Four more goals would be scored and Eastern would advance to the next round with their 5-0 victory in front of their home crowd. |

Thursday, October 27, 2005 By Clark Washington This was the last game of the regular season for Schalick, but it would have been nice to see this game played earlier in the season. In a non-league boy’s soccer game held at Eastern, the Vikings were hosting Schalick in a game that neither team needed to win in order to qualify for the upcoming tournament. Both of these teams have secured their position in the playoff and it would hard to say that each team didn’t give it their all to win this game. Nevertheless, when the Cougars scored the first goal of the game early in the second half, Schalick proved to be the better team on this day. The Vikings would watch Schalick post a 2-0 victory over them and both teams await the start at their run at the title next week. |

Monday, October 17, 2005 By Crystal Parker It’s not that easy being labeled as one of the best teams not only in our area, but also in the state. So what kind of pressure would a team have when they have been considered the fifth best team in the country? The Lady Vikings from Eastern was that team taking on the competition’s quest to see what it takes to defeat a highly ranked field hockey team. Cherokee would be next in line looking to pick up an important win with the cutoff date to make it to the playoffs only days away. Eastern broke this Olympic Conference game wide open at the start of the second half with two quick goals and went on to defeat Cherokee by an 8-0 margin. With the win, Eastern has now captured their seventh straight Olympic Conference American Division title. |

Tuesday, May 17, 2005 By Jason Brown Baseball is a very interesting game. On any given day, playing sound baseball with good pitching and solid defense, no team could be considered the favorite. Okay, sometimes those occasional bad hops and sometimes a key call at the plate don’t go a team’s way that could factor in the decision. The Eastern baseball squad has proven to be one of the best teams in our area by climbing to the top of their division. Camden Catholic was looking to win fourth out of their last five games against the visiting Vikings. The Fighting Irish would battle back from a three run deficit to score the winning run during their last at bat. Dave Kittle would score the winning run for Camden Catholic giving the Irish the 7-6 decision over Eastern. |

Friday, May 6, 2005 By Jerome Michaels It’s never easy to go a complete season without losing a single game, but when that rare occasion does occur that team should be highly rewarded with recognition of a job well done. Eastern’s baseball team had the staff and the players with the potential of going undefeated but loss their first game of the season to Cherokee two days ago. That loss was not a good sign for Bishop Eustace as Eastern would get that winning feeling flowing through the entire team. Pat Monaghan started the game on the mound for the Vikings and knocked in two runs with a triple to help Eastern pull away from their opponent. Eastern posted a 9-2 decision in an inter-Olympic Conference game. |

This tournament normally features several of the top schools in the state. This year was no exception as 7 of the top 15 schools attended. The first pool consisted of Eastern, East Brunswick, Cherry Hill East, Hackensack and St. Peters Prep. The second pool contained West Windsor South, Bridgewater, Cherry Hill West, Fairlawn and Wayne Hills. |

Monday, February 21, 2005 By Mike Costantino Derrick Schemmel scored both goals and Ryan Doner stopped 27 shots as Eastern defeated Clearview 2-1 at the Igloo in Mt. Laurel. With the win Eastern advances into the next round and will play Williamstown on Friday night at the Skate Zone in Voorhees, for Clearview their season is over. Eastern is trying to become the first three-peat team in league history and will need more efforts like tonight’s game should they want to advance. Eastern got on the board first as Richard Smith fed a pass from behind the net to Schemmel who was camped in front and his quick shot beat Bobby Kovarovic with just under two minutes remaining in the opening period. |

Monday, February 14, 2005 By Mike Costantino West Deptford proved last night that hard work, good goaltending and few penalties go a long way as they defeated Eastern 3-2 in opening round playoff action at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. From the opening period, West Deptford did not look like the 12th seeded team, the last one to make the playoffs, they played as if they belonged and they sure shocked the Vikings. West Deptford carried the play in the first period as they out-shot Eastern 11-8 and scored with just over a minute remaining as Tyler Chellew put home a rebound of a shot by Kevin Walsh. The Vikings responded twenty seconds later as Torin Lawson got the equalizer with the assists going to Chris Ball and Chris Lieg. |

Saturday, February 12, 2005 By Anthony Phillips With the seedings already established for the upcoming wrestling tournament, two teams finishing out the regular season was Eastern and Cherry Hill West. Both of these squads were leading their division in the Olympic Conference but only one of those teams qualifying for the post season. The Vikings from Eastern were seeded fifth in the Group 4 bracket, but in today’s matchup against Lions showed how focused they were against the leaders in the Patriot Division. Winning their first 5 matches, four of them on pins, Eastern established a lead they never relinquished. The Cougars would make the score respectable at the end as Eastern walked off the mat with a 45-30 marginal victory. |

Monday, January 31, 2005 By Mike Costantino Dan Drazen had three goals and two assists to lead the Eastern Vikings over Shawnee 6-4 at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Monday night. Ryan Doner stopped forty-two of forty-six shots as Eastern jumped into fourth place in closing out their regular season schedule. The two teams exchanged goals in the opening period as Rory Levinson used his reach to poke check the puck into the net and give Eastern a 1-0 lead. Dave DeBarth answered one minute later scoring on the power play for Shawnee. Drazen gave the Vikings the lead early in the second period scoring on a break and then made it 3-1 late in the period on a nice breakout pass from Richard Smith. |

Monday, January 10, 2005 By Mike Costantino Rory Levinson and Dan Drazen scored two goals each as Eastern came back and defeated Paul VI 7-4 in high school ice hockey excitement at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Coming off a loss to Williamstown on Friday night, Eastern rebounded nicely and battled all night in this seesaw affair. Drazen got things going early scoring in the opening two minutes of the game. After Paul VI tied the score at 1-1 on a goal by Zack Booth, Chris Ball put home a rebound of a shot by Levinson to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead heading into the second period. |

Friday, January 7, 2005 By Mike Costantino Justin Osterdahl scored five goals, including the game winner with twenty-three seconds left in the game as Williamstown upset Eastern 6-5 in high school ice hockey action played at Hollydell. Williamstown led 2-0 after the first period on goals by Eric Finn on the power play and one by Osterdahl on a breakaway. Eastern fought back to tie the game at 2-2 as Andrew Kaiser scored two goals less than a minute apart early in the second period. |

Monday, December 6, 2004 By Mike Costantino Lenape goalie John Hood stopped 31 shots and withstood an Eastern power play in the final minutes as Lenape skated to a 2-2 tie with Eastern on Monday night in Voorhees. It was the third straight tie for Lenape, after last week’s ties with Clearview and Cinnaminson. After a scoreless first period, Lenape scored twice in just over a minute. Jim Sauerbaum converted a pass from Alex Shaffer early in the period and then on the power play Frank Wittman made it 2-0 with the assists going to Matt Bozman and Brad Reed. |

Monday, November 15, 2004 By Mike Costantino The Moorestown Quakes have been just under the radar this season while winning their first six games, but after Monday night’s shutout of the Eastern Vikings by 4-0, they are definitely a team to watch. With three lines and unselfish play they resemble the formula the Vikings have used to win consecutive titles the last two years. Eastern started out strong and controlled play for the first six minutes of the game launching nine shots during that time but it was their inability to convert on the power play that would wind up costing them. After Moorestown killed off the first of seven Vikings advantages, the game seemed to turn as the Quakes proceeded to pepper Eastern goalie Ryan Doner with the next thirteen shots. Mike Bodine finally beat Doner, after Kyle Rupin made a great hustle play to keep the puck in at the point, putting home a rebound with Colin Corley and Kevin Schaffer getting the assists. |

Friday, November 5, 2004 By Mike Costantino Jim Fritz scored his second goal of the game with less than three minutes left in the third period as Clearview defeated Eastern 5-4 in SJHSIHL action played at Hollydell. The game was a seesaw affair with each team taking leads, but neither team taking control of the game. After a scoreless first period, Clearview took a 1-0 lead as Mike Sullivan scored a power play goal from the circle. Midway through the period with Eastern on the power play, Sullivan stole the puck and scored on a breakaway to make it 2-0. Eastern responded seconds later on the same man advantage, Dan Tavana put home a rebound of a Nick Rubino shot to cut the lead to 2-1. |

Monday, November 1, 2004 By Mike Costantino It's been eight long years since Cherry Hill East beat the Eastern Vikings, but led by senior defenseman Kevin Smith, East ended the drought with a 4-2 win over Eastern. Smith, along with the rest of his team, was disappointed with their power ranking, which had them listed at number eight. Coach Deroschers took the opportunity prior to the game to point out the ranking and challenged his team to prove us wrong. |

Monday, October 11, 2004 By Mike Costantino Just because the NHL has decided not to start their season on time, or even have a season at all doesn't mean there isn't any ice hockey to watch. Sure there's the AHL but we're talking the SJHSIHL. Dan Drazen scored twice and Ryan Donner stopped 27 shots as the Eastern Vikings shut out Highland 5-0 in the season opener for both teams. Having lost the nucleus from their past two championship teams, the Vikings find themselves in unfamiliar territory, no longer the odds on favorites to win the title. |

The field hockey team made good on its word, as they defeated Kingsway 9-0. In a rematch from last year’s 1-1 tie, which capped Eastern’s winning streak at 92, the game ended up being no match. |

Friday, October 8, 2004 By Vincent Lewis Some of you may remember an old science fiction show that stated, ‘Revenge is a dish best served cold’. Friday night at Shawnee High School, the Renegades had their chance to payback a team that handedly defeated them last year ending a six game winning streak. The Vikings from Eastern would do everything they could repeat their feat but Shawnee had other plans. Scoring twice in the first quarter, a 90 yard kickoff return and then a third quarter score was enough to hold off the Vikings and allow the Shawnee fans celebrate their 27-17 victory. |

Saturday, September 11, 2004 By John Daglian The 10th annual Viking invitational Girls Volleyball tournament was held at Eastern High School on Saturday September 11th. This tournament normally features several of the top Group 4 schools in the state. This year the participating schools were Eastern, Cherry Hill East, Cherry Hill West, Memorial, East Brunswick, Fairlawn, Wayne Hills, Hackensack, West Windsor South and Clifton. The two pools were divided as follows: Pool #1 consisted of Eastern, Wayne Hills, Memorial, Hackensack and West Windsor South. Pool #2 contained Cherry Hill East, East Brunswick, Cherry Hill West, Fairlawn and Clifton. |
