Florence Picks Up Second Straight C.J. Group Championship

Saturday, December 4, 2004

By Jerome Michaels
SJSports Special Correspondent

Every team faces challenges during the regular season and especially during the playoffs. For the Flashes from Florence, another challenge of facing an unfamiliar opponent during the Group playoffs tests the coaching staff’s ability to adapt. It seemed that Florence was able to execute their game plan against New Providence during the Central Jersey Group 1 title game at the Pit. Florence erased an early deficit and stream rolled past the Pioneers to pick up their second straight championship. Florence has now won 24 straight games with their 35-7 victory.

The Celebration Begins in Deptford, Spartans Win Group 3 Title

Saturday, December 4, 2004

By Vincent Lewis
SJSports Staff Writer

There’s much to say about a team winning a championship and trying to defend that title could be considered a very tough uphill battle. Teams always have to compensate for the loss of graduating seniors, coaching changes and sometimes injuries. The Spartans from Deptford High School could be entered into this category and their amazing quest to repeat relied on them coming away with a victory against a determined Moorestown football squad. In a very entertaining South Jersey Group 3 championship game, Deptford’s late fourth quarter touchdown run by DaJuane Collins was the deciding score against the Quakers. Deptford captured their second straight title with their 28-21 victory.

Shawnee Completes Undefeated Season by Capturing Championship

There's a lot to be said about a team who has made it to a championship game and then come away with the victory. Both of these teams in tonight’s South Jersey Group IV championship game have a bit of experience with winning and losing that final game. Last year, Washington Township was that team in the finals but coming away with the tough loss to Eastern. This year, the Renegades from Shawnee quickly erased any doubts of capping off an undefeated season with a victory at home against the Minutemen. Three first half touchdowns were more than enough to post a 26-13 win to finish the season with a 12-0 record.

West Deptford Rolls Past Paulsboro

For so many years, Paulsboro has become the team that opposing teams want to be because of the past success the Red Raiders had. The winning dynasty that Paulsboro had create has somewhat ended, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t still winning. On this night at West Deptford, the Eagles proved they were the better team scoring at least a touchdown in every quarter against Paulsboro. West Deptford erased an early deficit and cruised easily to a 42-7 victory. Both teams still have at least one more game to play as they will compete in their separate group finals.

It's always special when these two teams meet on the field, but it was something else that brought these two football teams from Gloucester together on Thanksgiving Day. The game was being played in honor of Marine Corporal Marc Ryan who was killed in action in Iraq. The former Gloucester player had his number 19 placed on the field for all to salute at the beginning of the game. When the opening whistle was blown to start this game, Gloucester Catholic broke open a close game during the third quarter and never looked back. The Rams from Gloucester Catholic cruised to a 40-14 victory.

Every game played on the field is a challenge that the Flashes from Florence has accepted. Deptford Hosts Group Finals with Win over Pemberton

Saturday, November 20, 2004

By Vincent Lewis
SJSports Staff Writer

There was a discussion before the game whether Pemberton's passing game would be able to keep up with Deptford's option offense. During the early moments of the South Jersey Group 3 semifinals game, it would seem as if the defenses would have their hands full. Both teams relied on their offensive lines for protection and both scored touchdowns in the first quarter indicating more points were about to come. But as the game began to develop, the Spartans' defense came up big at the right moments allowing the offense to score on a key 97 yard drive. That touchdown was the beginning of Deptford's 28-13 win over Pemberton propelling them into the finals again.

How does one really evaluate whether a team has been upset by another? Sure the seeding helps by labeling a team’s success before the playoffs begin, but what about that team doing the upsetting? In a semifinals game at Cherokee High School, the second seeded Chiefs were looking to keep the South Jersey Group 4 bracket the way the seeding were indicated. On this night, the sixth seeded Minutemen from Washington Township was the top team moving into the finals against Shawnee with their 14-12 victory. A statement is sometimes made when a team uses a disappointing lose and turns it into a well played game in which the outcome is a win. Sure, it's nice to play well but a victory to go with it...priceless. Cherokee was shutout last week by Shawnee and were looking to ease that painful loss with a win against a team that needed this game to try and qualify for the postseason. Winslow Township needed to pick up some power points and the Chiefs were the team that could allow them to earn it.
