Cherokee Ends Successful Season Dramatically

Saturday, December 3, 2005

By Vincent Lewis
SJSports Staff Writer

The way the Chiefs from Cherokee finished the regular season to qualify for the group tournament was a separate story in itself. After losing their first two games of the regular season, the Chiefs were faced with a must win situation each week they took the field. That sense of urgency but with a great deal of patience allowed Cherokee to compile a winning streak against some very good football programs. Absegami would be that final test that the Chiefs had to pass and it didn’t start the way they wanted. Trailing by 19 points, Cherokee managed a comeback that will be remember for a very long time that sent this game into overtime. A touchdown in overtime and a defensive stop of the Braves capped a very successful season for Cherokee as their 32-25 victory allowed the Chiefs to hold the South Jersey Group IV trophy high above their heads.

Confident Crusaders Capture SJ Group III Title

Saturday, December 3, 2005

By Clark Washington
SJSports Special Correspondent

It was evident from the opening ceremonies up until the final minutes remaining in the game. The Crusaders from Delsea were on a mission of capturing the South Jersey Group III title and win their 12th game in a row. The mission involved a very calm Delsea football team with one thing on their mind, and that was to remain extremely focused on their quest. Even with a three touchdown lead, the only indication that Delsea was winning was the capacity home crowd providing the celebrations. But with time ticking down to the final moments, the Gatorade bath attempt would begin. The Crusaders would only give up a last second touchdown by Lacey Township and go on to defeat the Lions 21-6 to complete their undefeated season.

It's Back to Back to Back Titles for Florence

Friday, December 2, 2005

One year ago, Florence had won their twenty-fourth game in a row without a single loss and were rewarded their second straight Central Jersey Group I title game. This year, it would be a different but familiar team the Flashes would have to beat in order to extend their winning streak to thirty-six games in a row. The second seeded David Brearley football squad was that team standing in the way of Florence's ambitions of winning their third title. An early lead followed by Joe Spahn's third touchdown run late in the fourth quarter finally sealed the win for Florence. With their 19-6 win, Florence were chanted the words...three peat, three peat, three peat.

Field Goal Gives Paul VI the Edge

Thursday, November 24, 2005

There were a lot of reasons many showed up at Camden Catholic to witness a classic high school football game Thanksgiving morning. One reason would be to stay out of trouble with the chef of the house as temptations of sneaking a taste of the turkey dinner would bring on a slap on the wrist. During the Paul VI and Camden Catholic football game, many players got a chance to play in front of visiting family and friends. As for the game, the Eagles would finally break a tie when place kicker Joe Owens kicked the game winning field goal with seconds remaining on the clock. Paul VI would defeat the Fighting Irish 17-14 in a thrilling game.

Football over the Thanksgiving weekend has been a tradition that dates back for quite some time. The holiday dinner usually begins with waking up to an early morning high school game and then a number of games slated for Thursday. The Panthers from Collingswood and Silver Knights from Sterling would get the extended weekend started under the lights at Sterling High School. Both of these teams had qualified for the post season, but today was about entertaining all in attendance to start out the holiday football tradition. All of the scoring of this game occurred during the first quarter and Collingswood would hold onto their 7-6 lead and pick up the win.

Paulsboro Avenges Last Year's Loss to Schalick

Saturday, November 19, 2005

By Clark Washington

The highly favored Red Raiders from Paulsboro were in a similar position last year for the South Jersey Group I championship. The defending champs Cougars from Schalick defeated Red Raiders by two touchdowns and were looking to repeat as champs this time at Paulsboro. What a difference a year makes as Paulsboro would be without their top running back in DeAndre Fowlkes. The team has put together an impressive nine game winning streak with no losses because Paulsboro had worked together as a unit on the field. But it doesn’t hurt to have Shavon Mears on the team to continue Paulsboro's love to run the ball. The Red Raiders would increase their overall record to ten wins on no losses after defeating Schalick by a 20-3 margin and advance to the group finals against Glassboro.

It was like a college game played in a high school arena with the bands playing their fight songs, the cheering of the fans from both sides of the stadium and competitive football being played on the field. Whenever the Renegades from Shawnee and the Chiefs from Cherokee get together for any sport, expect a very large crowd in attendance trying their best to do what they can to make their team come out victorious. But in this South Jersey Group IV semifinals game, the home fans just couldn’t cheer loud enough for the Renegades to rally from a 13-10 deficit late in the game. The Chiefs would hold onto their three point lead and advance to the finals and play the winner of the Absegami against Pennsauken semi-finalist.

It was amazing the way this game ended. No matter which team you were cheering for, it was an emotional roller coaster. The sixth seeded Panthers from Camden were in another situation where they had to win to move on. Winning a key game during the regular season allowed them a chance to capture the South Jersey Group II football title. Standing in their way were the third seeded Silver Knights from Sterling who featured arguably the best versatile player in the area with Arthur Ellis. The Panthers could not stop Ellis, but they were able to contain Sterling especially during the final moments of this first round game. An apparent touchdown on fourth and goal would be called back and Camden would hold on to upset Sterling 24-20. The Panthers will now host Collingswood next week.

It has been two years since the last time Pennsauken qualified for the playoffs and during that last appearance, they were the lower seed and loss in the first round. This year under different circumstances, the Indians were hosting the Vikings from Atlantic City in a South Jersey Group IV game as the second seed. Pennsauken were known for their running game behind Robert Darby, but it would be the defense that highlighted this game. For three quarters, the Indians kept Atlantic City off the scoreboard while the rushing attack began to find those wholes to run through. By the time the game ended, Pennsauken had gained over two hundred yards on the ground and advance to the next round with their 25-7 victory. Traveling to Deptford participating in a Tri-County Conference Royal Division game, Williamstown were unsuccessful scoring a rushing touchdown against the Spartans but would go to the passing game and surprise their opponent twice with touchdowns. The Braves defense would prevent Deptford from tying this game with time expiring and preserve their undefeated record by defeating the Spartans 14-7.

Seneca Powers Past Lenape When It Counts

Friday, November 4, 2005

By Vincent Lewis

There’s so much at stake no matter who your opponent is when the regular season schedule plays out its final games. No opponent should be taken lightly especially when a division title is on the line. Today’s game against the Lenape Indians was a game Seneca needed to win, not just for the standings but for a chance to host a first round playoff game. The Golden Eagles were in a tie with Triton in the Burlington/Olympic League Liberty Division but also trailed Triton by just two points in the power points standings. So the Eagles game against the Indians did start they way they wanted, but did finish in a way they needed. After trailing early in the first quarter, Seneca would score the next twenty-three points to defeat Lenape by a 30-13 margin. Tim Meise finished the game with 118 yards on 21 carries for the Golden Eagles.

So when Williamstown traveled to Gloucester to take on the Rams from Gloucester Catholic, it was those guys in the trenches that really made the difference in this game.
