Cherokee Scores Early and Often in Rout of Eastern

Monday, January 15, 2007

By Mike Costantino
SJSports Staff Writer

Kyle Manny and Justin Kinniry scored three goals each and Tom Paradise added two goals and two assists as Cherokee flew past Eastern 11-1 in action played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Having been a successful organization over the years the Vikings have struggled these last few years and instead of battling for the top spot, they find themselves near the bottom of the standings, and probably in Tier 2 next season. Thanks to the mercy rule, where a team with a 10 goal lead will be declared the winner, the game was stopped early in the third period when Ryan Thompson scored the eleventh goal. Torin Lawson scored the lone Viking goal. Kevin McMahon also scored twice for Cherokee.

Q&A with Flyers Head Coach Ken Hitchcock

Thursday, May 25, 2006

By Jorge Palmieri
Comcast Spectacor Public Relations

I don't think anybody in this organization has been part of something like that. Looking back it became too much of the focus about who was out with an injury and not about who was playing. It was emotionally draining on everybody in the organization. But being here at the Skate Zone and watching these players' improvement is just so dramatic. To see a player walk in the next day after surgery and then see the same player two weeks later after rehabbing is really dramatic. There is a real opportunity here for a lot of the nagging injuries to get completely healed, especially in the groin and hamstring area.

On Sunday night at the Wachovia Spectrum, the Philadelphia Phantoms formidable winning streak was halted at five games with a 2-1 loss to the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins. The loss put the Phantoms at the brink of playoff elimination. The assist extended Voce's season-high point-scoring streak to 10 games. The Philadelphia-born winger has six goals and 10 assists during the run:

Hood Stands Strong, But Williamstown Finds a Way

Friday, February 3, 2006

By Vincent Lewis
SJSports Staff Writer

There has to be a lot said about a team that has not won a single game during the regular season and has loss their starting goalie. So when the Braves from Williamstown took the ice against Lenape in a Tier I first round playoff game, on paper it appeared that this game would be an easy win for Williamstown. And it would start out that way when twenty seconds into the game, Thomas Ruiz's difficult angle goal from behind the net gave Williamstown the lead. Another goal during the second period pushed that lead even further. During this entire game, the Braves attempted shot after shot after shot that John Hood put himself in front of. But the two goals that got pass were more than enough for Williamstown to advance to the next round.

Mark Lamberto is not hard to find on the ice, he’s arguably the smallest player in the SJHSIHL, but on Friday night at Hollydell, he was the best player on the ice, especially in the first period as Timber Creek defeated West Deptford 5-1. Five minutes into the game Lamberto sent in Tom Hopkins and his shot found the net for a 1-0 lead. Given a chance to tie on the power play minutes later, West Deptford was stoned by Derek Cafasso on a great scoring opportunity, and Lamberto picked up the puck and he flew down the ice with Phil Rivello and joining them on the break was Danny Cavallaro, Lamberto hit Cavallaro and his quick shot gave Timber Creek a 2-0 lead.

When defending champs Cherokee 1 competed against Cherokee 2 at the Skate Zone in Voorhees, it appeared as if this game could have a different result than the first time these two teams met earlier in the season. Cherokee 2 would get the game's first goal on a power play, but Cherokee 1 would score four unanswered goals through the first and second periods to take a 4-1 lead. Cherokee 2 would come within a goal, but the end results would see Cherokee 1 holding onto a 6-4 win extending their unbeaten streak to 16 games.
