Phantoms Week in Review

The Phantoms recorded two wins and an overtime loss last week to maintain the AHL lead in points (47). On Wednesday in Hershey, Matt Herr's goal 38 seconds into overtime was the difference in a 3-2 Bears win over the Phantoms. Tomas Divisek and John Slaney each scored for Philadelphia, Pavel Brendl had two assists and Neil Little made 31 saves.

Eastern Rallies to Upset Clearview

Mike Purwin scored two goals in a span of two minutes midway through the third period as Eastern rallied to upset first place Clearview 5-3 giving Coach Pontonio an early Christmas present. Six of the eight goals scored in the game were a result of the Vikings power play. Clearview scored two goals, both by John Probe on shorthanded breakaways. The first one with Eastern having a two-man advantage, Probe stole the puck at center ice and skated in alone and beat goalie Dan Myers just under the crossbar.

Moorestown Too Much for Inexperienced Kingsway

Chris Frynkewicz had a career night scoring four goals and assisting on four others as Moorestown cruised by Kingsway 11-0 in Tier 2 action played at Hollydell on Friday night. Kevin Schaeffer and Andrew Jaffola chipped in with two goals each as Moorestown scored five times in the opening period and never looked back. Jason Ketchel gave Moorestown a quick 1-0 lead just two minutes into the game. Moorestown put on constant pressure with Ketchel putting in the puck from the side of the net.

Martorano and Pelle Brothers Too Much for East

Nick Martorano had a goal and three assists, Joe and Jason Pelle scored two goals apiece as Washington Township defeated Cherry Hill East 8-2. In a game that became more physical as time wore on, Township took advantage of the man advantage by scoring four power play goals. Joe Pelle scored the only goal of the first period on a great cross-ice pass from Martorano, as he just redirected the puck into the net. The period ended with Township up 1-0.

Shawnee Blanks Rancocas

Jeff Sutphin stopped all twelve shots as Shawnee blanked Rancocas Valley 3-0 in SJHSIHL action played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. John McGinnis scored the only goal of the period and the eventual game winner, as Todd Dennison set him up in the slot and Shawnee led 1-0. Neither team generated much offense as both teams combined for a total of seven shots in the period. Midway through the second period, Rancocas turned the puck over in their own zone and Bill Hansbury broke in all alone and beat Chelsea Ward to make it 2-0.

Triton Too Much For Kingsway

Chris Ramsay netted a hat trick and Bob Daily added two goals as they led a balanced Triton attack over Kingsway 11-4 in Tier 2 action at Hollydell on Friday night. Triton was in control from the opening period as they scored seven goals in the first period and never looked back. Ramsay opened the scoring, as Triton capitalized on the power play and led 1-0, just over two minutes into the game. Daily made it 2-0 just over two minutes later putting home a rebound of a Wade Ingraham shot. Then thirty seconds later, Ingraham scored right off the face-off as Ramsay won the draw cleanly and Ingraham blasted the puck into the net to make it 3-0.

Pelle Leads Undefeated Township Over Eagles

Jason Pelle scored four goals to lead Washington Township's Tier 2 team to a 9-5 victory over the West Deptford Eagles in a battle for first place on Friday night at Hollydell. With the win Township increased their lead to three points over the Eagles in a battle for supremacy in Tier 2. Pelle scored just over one minute into the game on a nice feed from Chris Keyser, who hit Pelle in the slot, and his one-timer made it 1-0. West Deptford responded scoring the next three goals as Doug Dehart, Brad Clifford and a late breakaway goal by Brandon Jackmuff and led 3-1 after one period.

Cherokee Blanks Under-manned Eastern

Chris Sabol stopped twenty-three shots and four different players scored as Cherokee blanked Eastern 4-0 in action at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Missing several players due to injury, Eastern only had two lines available but received a solid performance in nets by Dan Myers. Cherokee however continues to prove that they are a serious contender for the title this year and remain just two points behind Clearview in the battle for first place. Sean Zhacewski scored five minutes into the game, as he was camped in the slot and converted a nice pass from the corner by Mike Scian to make it 1-0.

Gunnar Fox had a goal and an assist, Jason Brown stopped all twenty-two shots as Clearview defeated Rancocas Valley 3-0 on Monday night at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. The game began with Rancocas carrying the play for the first half of the period, but Brown turned away every chance. With less than seven minutes remaining in the period, Fox converted a pass from John Probe and Clearview led 1-0 scoring on their first shot.

Clearview Proves They're Still Top Chief as Cherokee Falls

Joe Smith scored two goals in the last four minutes to snap a 3-3 tie as Clearview beat Cherokee 6-3. With the win Clearview took over sole possession of first place in the SJHSIHL in a game played at Hollydell on Friday evening. Steve Sheridan gave Cherokee a 1-0 lead scoring a power play goal converting a feed from Shawn Zahacewski. It would stay that way until early in the second period when Gunnar Fox put home a rebound of a shot from John Probe to tie the game at 1-1. Probe would also figure in the go ahead goal as he dug the puck out of the corner and hit Chris Riggs in front and his goal gave Clearview a 2-1 lead after two periods.

Washington Township used balanced scoring to defeat Highland 8-5 in Tier 2 action at Hollydell on Friday night. Despite surrendering eight goals, Highland goaltender Greg Reese was outstanding facing sixty-one shots, numerous from in close and did well to only allow eight to get past him. Leading the way for Township with two goals each were Jason Pelle, Ryan Jagielski and Mike Duczkowski. For Highland, John Feldman and Nick Megara scored two goals each.

Washington Township scored two goals in the last minute of the game, the game winner by Joe Pelle with thirty seven seconds left that defeated Cinnaminson 7-6 at Hollydell on Friday evening. Nick Martorano led Township with three goals and two assists, Steve Parent led the Cinnaminson attack with three goals. In an entertaining game that saw the lead change hands several times. Cinnaminson proved that they are a team to be reckoned with, having already defeated Clearview and now looking to knock off Township.

Special Teams Key as Holy Cross Edges Paul VI

Holy Cross scored twice on the power play and killed off three short-handed situations in the third period and held off Paul VI 3-2 in Tier 2 action played at Hollydell on Friday night. Ryan Potosky led Holy Cross with a goal and two assists and Dom Golato added a goal and an assist. Brett Balco gave Paul VI the 1-0 midway through the first period converting a pass from behind the net from Mike DiGennaro. Potosky tied the game just over a minute later on pure hustle by Golato, as he fought for the puck behind the net. Golato was shoved to the ice and from his knees fed the puck to Potosky who buried it long side and it was 1-1.

Mike Duczkowski, Dominic Fiandra and John Lomonaco scored two goals each and Tom Davidson added a goal and three assists as Washington Township held off a late charging Highland team 8-5 in Tier 2 action played at the new Vineland Ice Arena on Monday night. Township scored five goals in the opening period, most on odd-man rushes utilizing their speed to create numerous scoring chances. The first coming in the games opening minute as Duczkowski broke in all alone, and after the initial save was made, Fiandra skating down the right wing jammed home the rebound for a 1-0 lead.

Dave Gooch scored with less than five minutes left in the game to snap a 2-2 tie and lead Clearview over Rancocas Valley 4-2 in a varsity game played at Hollydell on Friday night. It was clear from the outset that the game plan for Rancocas was to play solid defense, back check and wait for a break. Jeff Sporer who broke in all-alone and lifted a back-hander scored the only goal of the first period and Rancocas led 1-0 heading into the second period. Nick DeJesus tied the score at 1-1 scoring off a feed from Sam Valora and Bill Dubar.

Seven different players scored for Washington Township's Tier 2 team as they defeated Triton 8-0 in a game played at Hollydell on Friday evening. Township erupted for six goals in the first period and never looked back. Dominic Fiandra led the attack with two goals and an assist and Mike Duczkowski added a goal and two assists. Already up 2-0 early in the game, Chris Keyser fed Carl Orth in the slot and his one-timer made it 3-0.

Late Goal By Orner Has Eastern Fit To Be Tied

Anthony Orner scored with nine seconds remaining as Eastern rallied to tie Washington Township 2-2 in a well played game at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Monday night. Both teams got solid play from their goaltenders, with Dan Meyers stopping 17 of 18 shots in the first period and keeping Eastern in the game. The only shot that beat Meyers was on the power play as Drew Petersen put home a rebound off a Tom Davies blast and Township led 1-0. Township had constant pressure and controlled play for most of the period but Meyers stood tall.

Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Brian Boucher has been named NHL Player of the Week for the period of Monday, Oct. 29 through Sunday, Nov. 4. Boucher posted a 2-1-0 record, a 0.67 goals-against average and a .978 save percentage in three games, highlighted by consecutive shutouts and the longest shutout streak by a NHL goaltender this season (184:30).

Mark Capone and Eric Marano each scored twice and added an assist and Drew Peterson chipped in with a goal and two assists to lead Washington Township over Shawnee 7-1 in a SJHSIHL varsity game played at Hollydell on Friday night. Using their speed to create opportunities, Township capitalized on the power play as Eric Marano broke down the left wing and put the puck on net. Capone jumped on the rebound and lifted the puck over the goalie for a 1-0 lead. Just over a minute later with the face off in the Shawnee zone, Tom Davidson drew the puck back to Dom Fiandra and his one-timer made it 2-0.

A Few Thoughts About Discipline, Fighting And The Officials

As most hockey fans know the Clearview/Township game a few weeks ago deteriorated into a "pier 6 brawl", something that has been happening too frequently throughout the league. Is fighting a part of hockey? Not at this level. These are kids, not professionals. Players are bigger and faster now than twenty years ago. This is true, but what seems to be lacking in certain instances is discipline. As parents we can teach our kids the difference between right and wrong, but we can't make choices for them. We entrust our kids to the coaches and rely on them not only to educate them on the game of hockey, but also how to conduct themselves as young men on the ice.

Gunnar Fox tallied twice and added an assist as Clearview held off Eastern 7-4 and remains undefeated this season. Fox opened the scoring in the opening minute as he broke in with John Probe on a 2-on-1. After Probe made the defenseman commit he slid the puck to Fox who deposited it into the empty net. Just over two minutes later Fox led another odd man rush and his slap shot from just inside the blue line went in off goaltender Manny Rayo's glove and it was 2-0.

Gunnar Fox scored four times and Anthony Desimone added two goals and two assists as Clearview defeated Cherry Hill East 10-2 and remain the only undefeated Tier 1 team in the league. John Probe opened the scoring for Clearview as Cherry Hill got caught on a line change. Probe broke in all alone and just over a minute into the game Clearview led 1-0. Two minutes later Nick Vacarino intercepted a clearing pass and scored short-handed to make it 2-0. Desimone made it 3-0, after a scramble in front he put the puck just inside the far post.

Eric Marano tallied twice and Dan Straga played a strong game in nets as Washington Township beat Rancocas Valley 6-2 in a Tier 1 game played at Hollydell on Friday night. After Aaron Smith scored a power play goal just over two minutes into the game to give Rancocas the early 1-0 lead, Marano tied the score at 1-1 on a nice feed from Joe Pelle and Mark Capone. Early in the second period Township had a two-man advantage and capitalized as Capone's blast from the point found the back of the net and a 2-1 lead.

Patrick Henderson had four goals and an assist and Chris Sabol stopped thirty shots as Cherokee defeated Eastern 7-4 in a SJHSIHL game played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Monday night. Henderson opened the scoring in the first minute as he stole the puck and beat Manny Rayo, who was starting in place of the injured Dan Myers. Eastern tied the game at 1-1 just over four minutes later as Brian Schellenhammer hit a streaking Tom Fadako in the slot and his blast beat Sabol top shelf.

Greg Custer had four goals and two assists to lead undefeated Moorestown to a 10-0 rout of Sterling. Anthony Fendrick and Ian Kindermann chipped in with a goal and two assists each as Moorestown in their first year in the league, improved to 3-0 in Tier 2 competition. Custer netted a natural hat trick as he scored the first three goals in just over three minutes into the game.

With the last two league champions playing in front of a packed house of fans, the focus should have been on the players and who will be the team that will be the favorite to win the championship. However, the officials had other ideas as they took control early and often. The game dragged on with the third period, initially being shortened to ten minutes, was called after about five minutes had been played. Oh, by the way, Clearview won 7-2 as Gunnar Fox and Chris Riggs tallied two goals each to lead the attack.

Highland took control early as Dorr scored just twenty-six seconds into the game. Megara made it 2-0 at the fifty-three second mark as Highland seemed a step quicker than the Pirates.

Rancocas Valley Krafts a Championship

Led by the outstanding play of goaltender Kevin Kraft, Rancocas Valley defeated Eastern 6-4 to win the Middle School championship at the B level. Rancocas had five different players score goals, with Rob Brown scoring twice. Jordan Robichaud led the Vikings attack with two goals. The game was scoreless midway through the first period until Frank Luciano shot the puck from the point. It seem to change direction and found the back of the net to give Rancocas a 1-0 lead.

2001 Flyers Cup Scholastic Championship Begins On March 19

The Philadelphia Flyers Youth Hockey Department and the Delaware Valley High School Hockey Association today announced the start of the 22nd annual Flyers Cup scholastic ice hockey championship. The tournament will begin on March 19 and end on March 28. Preliminary games will be played at the Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, NJ, Ice Line in West Chester, PA, Ice Works in Aston, PA, the Face Off Circle in Warminster, PA, Grundy Ice Rink in Bristol, PA, and the Havertown (PA) Skatium.

Somerdale resident Mike Moroni plays forward for the Triton Mustangs ice hockey team. Mike has played all of his four years at Triton and with graduation looming, he plans to continue his education at a tech school. He hopes to continue playing after high school and credits the influence and support of his dad and brother Nick for helping him to persevere with practice and game time. Mike spends his down time away from the ice by working on his car and singing with a band. Car racing is also one of his favorites.

Buddy Anderson scored two goals as Washington Township defeated Clearview 5-2 in the third and deciding game of the SJHSIHL championship. It was Township's first championship since 1996 which gave Coach Steve Brown the title in his first year as head coach. After spotting Clearview a 2-0 lead on goals by Mike Gooch and Ryan Arnold, Anderson scored Township's first two goals on power plays to tie the score at 2-2. The first goal he went end-to-end after goalie Adam Sezchech fed him the puck and beat Wiesenbach on the short side.

Buddy Anderson scored less than two minutes into the first overtime as Washington Township defeated Clearview 5-4. That win evened the championship series at one game apiece. The third and deciding game will be played Wednesday night at 7:00 at Hollydell. Mike Gooch paced the Clearview attack scoring a hat trick. The game started out as a defensive struggle with both teams taking few chances, but Clearview capitalized on a turnover with Township on the power play. Gooch intercepted a clearing pass and scored an unassisted short-handed goal seven minutes into the game.

Before a standing room only crowd on Friday night, the first period belonged to Clearview goalie Jared Weisenbach as he turned aside all eighteen shots, constantly frustrating the Township offense. Clearview could only generate three shots in the opening period and thanks to Weisenbach, entered the second period scoreless.

The Triton Mustangs defeated Holy Cross 3-0 and captured the JVB championship in the SJHSIHL in front of a packed house at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Zach Booth scored two goals and Steve Zimmerman added a late third period goal to pace the attack for the Mustangs. Mike Sullivan and Vince Gutierrez led the smothering defense played by Triton as they limited Holy Cross to ten shots on goal for the game.

Township Wins JVA Title As Spallino Nets Three

John Spallino scored three goals, Ian Potter added a goal and two assists against Highland to help Washington Township win the JVA championship 7-2 in the SJHSIHL. Township was in control from the start scoring three first period goals, including a power play goal by Mark Capone in the first three minutes to take an early 1-0 lead. Right after the face-off Potter made it 2-0 with a blast through a screen. The lead grew to 3-0 with just under nine minutes left in the period as Potter sent a shot toward the net that was re-directed into the net by Spallino.

David Gooch and Ryan Arnold each scored two goals as Clearview beat Eastern 7-3 and advanced to the finals in the SJHSIHL. Clearview will defend its championship against arch rival Washington Township in a best of three series, with game one at Hollydell at 7:15 on Friday March 2nd. Clearview dominated the first period out shooting Eastern 15-2. If not for the play of net minder Mike Keppler, the Vikings would have faced a larger deficit.

Buddy Anderson had two goals and an assist, Tom Davies and Joe Pelle chipped in with a goal as Washington Township defeated Shawnee 4-3 to swept the two game series and advanced to the finals. Township awaits the winner of the Clearview/Eastern series; Clearview leads one game to none. As in game one, Jeff Sutphin was stellar in nets for Shawnee. With solid checking and good goaltending, it was the main reason Shawnee gave Township all it could handle.

Marano Hat Trick And Three Late Goals Propel Township

Eric Marano netted a hat trick with three third period goals to brake open a close game as Washington Township beat Shawnee 7-2 in game one of the semi-finals played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Monday night. Township controlled much of the play in the first period and jumped out early as Marano intercepted a clearing pass and scored unassisted to give Township a 1-0 lead forty-nine seconds into the game. Shawnee goalie Jeff Sutphin played spectacular in the period stopping thirteen of fourteen shots. Although Shawnee could only generate three shots in the period, Jordan Kudatzky's power play goal tied the score at 1-1.

Power Play Goals And Discipline Keys To Clearview Playoff

Clearview scored four power play goals and also played disciplined hockey as they defeated Eastern 6-1 in the game one of the semi-finals. David Gooch had two goals, his brother Mike added a goal and two assists for Clearview while Mike Becker scored the lone goal for the Vikings. David Gooch scored both goals in the first period both on the power play. He skated in and faked out goal keeper Ramsay and slid the puck into the empty net to make it 1-0 at the ten-minute mark. Less than three minutes later it was 2-0 as Rob Coble fed Gooch and he drilled the puck into the net.

Hollydell Hurricanes Bantan A Winding Down Successful Season

The Hollydell Hurricanes Banatm A team is completing it's first season as a member of the New Jersey Youth Hockey League.  In it's first seaon, the Hurricanes compiled at 10-9-5 record for 25 points. The highlights of the season were a  2-1 win over the American Eagle (15-7-0),  5-4 victory over the JR. Phantom ( 18-5-0) and a recent win over the Legion "AA" Bantam Minor hockey team 4-3.

Clearview Blanks Cherry Hill To Move Into Semi-finals

Mike Gooch scored twice, Rob Coble and Mike Cargill also tallied as Clearview defeated Cherry Hill East 4-0 in a quarterfinal game played Friday night at Hollydell. With the win, Clearview moved into the semi-finals in a rematch from last year against the Eastern Vikings. After a scoreless first period which saw Clearview shorthanded for the last six minutes, Gooch scored in the first minute of the second period beating East goalie Brandon Ramsay to give Clearview the 1-0 lead. Ramsay was the lone bright spot for East, as he kept his team close for most of the game. East's offense could only muster fourteen shots on goal.

Washington Township flew past Rancocas Valley 11-2 as Joe Gori scored three goals, Steve Brown added two goals and three assists to pace the balance scoring attack of the Minutemen as they continue their quest for the title and remained undefeated in league play. Buddy Anderson chipped in with two goals and two assists and Adam Zaccaria added two goals. Kyle Tuliano and Van Daele scored the goals for Rancocas. The game was scoreless for the first seven minutes as Township looked to gather its legs. But once Township started scoring, they just come at you in waves.

Slow Start And Penalties Didn't Hurt Township

Washington Township spotted Shawnee a 1-0 lead and took over fifteen penalties but still rallied to win 6-2 in a game played at Hollydell on Friday evening. With the win, Township still remained undefeated in league play. George McGinnis scored the only goal of the first period to give Shawnee the 1-0 lead after lifting a back-hander into the net after five minutes were played. With Township playing sluggish and taking some ill-advised penalties, Shawnee had a two-man advantage for a full two minutes late in the period and failed to capitalize.

Cherry Hill East Romps Over Lenape

Chris Hartung had a hat trick, Mike Danyo and Chris Zizzamia added two goals each as Cherry Hill East dominated Lenape 14-1 in a game played at Hollydell on Friday night. Lenape was still looking for its first win of the season and despite the lopsided score, the players were still working hard even late into the third period. East scored five goals each in the first and second periods while out-shooting Lenape thirty-five to ten through the first two periods. Zizzamia opened the scoring in the first two minutes of the game and East never looked back.

Third Period Goal Leads Eastern Over Cherry Hill

Tom Fadako broke a 2-2 tie midway through the third period and Eastern hung on for a 3-2 victory over Cherry Hill East in a game played at the Skate Zone on Monday night. In a game dominated by the play of both goaltenders, Kyle Bradshaw for Eastern and Brendan Ramsay for Cherry Hill, both took turns controlling the play. Eastern had nine of the first ten shots on goal and led 2-0 seven minutes into the game. First, Mike Becker broke in and beat Ramsay along the ice just over a minute into the game. Mike Purwin made it 2-0 as he broke in all alone and his back hander beat Ramsay on the short side.

Ramsay Outduels Sabol As East Edges Cherokee

Brendan Ramsay and Chris Sabol put on a clinic in strong goaltending, but it was Ramsay's strong play in the third period that enabled Cherry Hill East to edge Cherokee 2-1 in a game played at Hollydell on Friday night. Each goalie took turns carrying their team in the first period with Sabol stopping all eleven shots, including several from point blank range to keep the game scoreless heading into the middle stanza. The second period was Ramsay's turn as he stoned several Cherokee players on breakaways and the game remained scoreless until less than four minutes remaining in the period.

Ryan Arnold had a natural hat trick and Mike Gooch added two goals and an assist as Clearview moved into a tie for second place with its 5-4 victory over Eastern. Mike Purwin paced the Vikings attack with two goals. Gooch scored the only goal of the first period as he went top shelf to beat Eastern goalie Dan Meyers. Early in the second period Purwin went end-to-end and tied the game at 1-1, with Mike Becker missing from the lineup, Purwin was Eastern's best player.

Brandon Jackmuff had two goals and two assists as West Deptford defeated Triton 4-2 in Tier 2 action at Hollydell on Friday night. With the victory West Deptford maintained its hold on second place in Tier 2, three points ahead of Triton. Buddy Flick opened the scoring for Triton, as he tallied the only goal of the first period as neither team could muster much offense. The second period was all West Deptford, scoring three goals in a six minute span and in particular Jackmuff.

Jaguars Bantam Black Youth Hockey Team Wins

The Jaguars Bantam Black Youth Hockey club is made up of 17 players (ages 13-15) from the following towns in South Jersey: Audubon, Berlin, Blackwood, Cherry Hill, Collingswood, Erial, Haddonfield, Medford, Medford Lakes, Moorestown and Voorhees. They compete in the New Jersey Youth Hockey League. The Jaguars home rink is High Ridge Arena in Gibbsboro. The Jaguars have completed about 60% of their schedule and are 31-5-0 overall (13-3 NJYHL, 13-0 tournament).
