Washington Township Looks Almost Perfect At Midway Point

Friday, December 29, 2000

By Mike Costantino
SJSports Staff Writer

With the high school ice hockey season enjoying a break through the holidays, its pretty clear that Washington Township has distinguished itself as the best team so far during the regular season. However, the championship is determined in a best of three finals and I don't think any team is ready to concede the trophy just yet. Especially Township's rival Clearview. The second half of the season opens with Township playing Clearview on January 5th . After being smoked in their first meeting, Clearview needs to have a strong showing to at least place some doubt in Townships' mind that you are not the champs until you beat the champs.

Joe Pelle had three goals and an assist, Joe Gori and Steve Brown each scored twice as Washington Township raced to a 9-1 victory over Eastern in the first meeting between the top two teams in the league. Buddy Anderson added a goal and four assists. Township used its speed and took control early as Pelle scored with less than two minutes played as he broke in and beat freshman goalie Dan Meyers. Most of the period was spent in the Eastern zone as their defense continually gave Township the blue line. Against a high powered offense, that simply just won't work.

Collingswood only dressed six skaters and a goaltender and displayed a lot of stamina and heart in keeping the game as competitive as it was. Coach of Eastern Trying to Deal with Losing

Tuesday, February 22, 2000

By Mike Costantino

Mike Pontonio, like most coaches hates to lose, and one of the toughest things in sports is dealing with the reality that you just didn't have enough players to succeed. In Coach Pontonio's position, he hasn't had to deal with much failure, in the last four years he has won the championship at every level, including the last two titles at the varsity level. Not many teams in any sport win championships back-to-back, and with such success comes a desire for the team you're playing on that particular night to put a little extra effort because they are playing the defending champs. Every game is like a playoff game even against the lesser teams, everyone wants to beat the champion.
